On Front Street you will find the 1812 Memorial Park.  On April 6 through April 8, 1813 Lewes sustained heavy cannon fire from the British ships, and was bombarded by Congreve rockets, the first use of this technology against the Americans.

Not knowing was Congreve rockets were…I was curious.  These rockets were developed by Sir William Congreve in 1804.  He registered 2 patents, and published 3 books on rocketry. It is a long story, but one interesting tidbit is the fact that: It was the use of ship launched Congreve rockets by the British in the bombardment of Fort McHenry in the U.S. in 1814 that inspired the fifth line of the first verse of the United States’ National Anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner”: “and the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air”.

Destination? Tulip Festival, April 9 – 18, 2015, Historic Lewes, Delaware, Events, Activities, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware, TGIG

The timing of the tulip’s appearance is an inexact science and to that end, the committees in charge of the annual Tulip Festival in Lewes, Delaware, decided to expand the time frame of the event to enhance the chances that the tulips will be visible during the event.  The event dates span two week-ends, April 9th to April 18th, with special events planned on the first week-end.

img_3113

Having said that and having visited Lewes, yesterday, Thursday….it might be better to come to see the tulips next week.  It is what it is, mother nature does it again.  But, if you like to have fun at the beach, by no means come on down.

100_1079

This is the 6th Annual Tulip Festival.  The Lewes Chamber of Commerce continues to partnership with Lewes in Bloom, The Lewes Historical Society, Lewes Parks & Recreation, the Zwaanendael Museum and the Historic Lewes Farmers Market to present this annual celebration.

For those comming to the Delaware Beaches for a week-end of fun and relaxation, March is a wonderful month at the beach.  So, I am giving you plenty of time to make plans because this documentary is worth seeing if you are a beer aficionado.

IMG_2162IMG_2154

This informative domentary chronicles the story of one of the most vibrant and popular industries in the U.S…..BEER!!  With nealy one billion in annual sales, the U.S. beer market is growing rapidly.  At its peak, in the early 1900s, the brewing industry in Baltimore distributed products by over 40 distinct breweries, and National Brewing Company was a producing over 1 million barrels per year.  Although the industry declined, it made a resurgence in the mid-1980s and microbreweries started opening in neighborhoods throughout the city.  “Brewing Baltimore” takes us on a journey through Baltimore’s past and present as historian Maureen O’Prey guides us through the city’s rich brewing history.  We learn about the old stalwarts of the trade and are introduced to Baltimore’s newes set of modern day brewers.  A review on http://www.baltimorepostexaminer.com says “When the film ends, it feels much like the introduction to something much larger.  It’s like it’s setting up some grand adventure that is just beginning.”  When you open the website above mentioned, put Brewmore Baltimore on the Search.

A post film discussion will be led by filmmaker Nicholas Kovacic and Baltimore historian Maureen O’Prey.  Admission for this event is $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under.  Tickets can be purchased online at http://www.rehobothfilm.com, or by calling the Rehoboth Beach Film Society at 302-645-9095, ext. 1.

BIRDING FIELD TRIP AT PRIME HOOK – January 23rd from 8:30 a.m. until Noon.  This is the first birding field trip of the 2014 season at Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge.  The trips will originate from the Refuge Headquarters office and will run for about 3 hours.  Since 85% of the bird species found on the Refuge are migrants, every month of the year brings the opportunity for different species of birds to be observed.  You should take your binoculars.  The Refuge has a few pairs of loaner binoculars if needed.  Be prepared to walk up to a mile and please dress appropriately.  In the event of light rain, the trip will still go.  But, it will be cancelled if the rain is heavy.  Please call the Refuge at 302-684-8419 for more info.  Or, check http://www.fws.gov/refuge/Prime_Hook/about.html.
