FRIDAY, DECEMBER 5TH – FULL MOON HIKE – 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. During full moon nights it is a beautiful time to visit Cape Henlopen State Park. Explore it at night by the light of the full moon as you search for the sights and sounds of animal activity. This hike is perfect for ages 7 and up with a paying adult. Dress warmly. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 6TH – THE 41ST ANNUAL CHRISTMAS TOUR OF LEWES – 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Adance tickets are $20 each. Tickets on the day of will be $25. Children under 12 are free. Online ticket purchases can only be made until 4 p.m. on Friday, December 5th. After that time, tickets will only be available at The Ryves Holt House and Lewes Chamber of Commerce Office. If you ordered tickets online or by phone, all ticket orders will be held at The Ryves Holt House Museum Gift Shop at the corner of 2nd & Mulberry Sts. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 6TH – 83rd ANNUAL LEWES CHRISTMAS PARADE – This year’s theme is Santa’s Workshop. The parade will be Saturday but in the event of rain, it will be Sunday at the same time. It will start at 5 p.m., with a line-up beginning at 3:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. The parade will begin on Savannah Rd. at Sussex Drive and will end in front of King’s Ice Cream Shop on Second St. The Chamber Board of Directors will be leading the parade, carrying a huge helium balloon. After the parade, stand by because the Christmas tree in Zwaanendael Park will be illuminated followed by candlelight caroling in the park. NOTE: DUE TO THE FORECAST, THE PARADE HAS BEEN CANCELLED FOR BOTH DAYS. SO SORRY!
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 7TH – DELAWARE DAY – Merchants in Lewes celebrate the day in 1787 when the First State ratified the Constitution. 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Front Street, the merchants will have available Delaware items, as well as refreshments. Even though visitors to Lewes have been already doing plenty of celebration….this town is just awesome!! This week-end the Holidays begin in earnest in The First Town of the First State. So, get ready and have a plan of action so that you can enjoy everything, because all the events, except the hours of visitation for Santa’s House are on Saturday, December 7th.
Saturday, 12/7 – COOKIE WALK SALE – Bethel United Methodist Church, 129 West Fourth St. This is an annual church fundraising event. Last year’s cookie sale sold in less than an hour….get there on time. They are sold by the dozen…$6/dozen. The cookies are baked by the ladies of Bethel United Methodist Church. Sit back and relax during the holidays, because they have done the baking for you. All proceeds go to the Bethel United Methodist Church. Doors open at 10 a.m.
Saturday, 12/7 – 40TH ANNUAL CHRISTMAS TOUR OF LEWES – A beloved tradition in this historic town. Funds raised at the event help support the Children’s Beach House general operating budget. It is an opening reception. Meet the artists and be the first to view the works of some amazing talent. The Christmas Tour of Lewes benefiting The Lewes Historical Society. 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Also, part of the Christmas week-end in Lewes. Walk around the table, choosing the cookies you want. Select as many or as few of each kind you like. When finished, your box will be weighed and the cost calculated. $6 per pound!! They will offer candy and dog treats too.
Saturday, 12/1 – The 81st Annual Lewes Christmas Parade at 5:00 p.m. Parade Theme? Let it Snow!! Tom King, Chairman of The Lewes Christmas Parade, which is jointly sponsored by the City of Lewes and the Lewes Chamber of Commerce, has announced the selection of the Lewes Historical Society as the Honorary Grand Marshals for the Christmas Parade in honor of their 50th Anniversary. The Society was officially founded on January 19, 1962. It has been responsible for preserving some of Lewes’ most recognizable, historic buildings, as well as offering a rich array of activities for both Lewes residents and visitors.
The parade takes place on December 1st…rain/snow date: Sunday, December 2nd at the same time. Prizes will be awarded in many categories. The parade begins on Savannah Road at Sussex Drive and will end in front of King’s Ice Cream Shop on Second Street. The Chamber’s board of directors will be leading the parade, carrying a huge Frosty the Snowman helium balloon. After the parade, the Christmas tree in Zwaanendael Park will be illuminated, followed by candlelight caroling in the park led by Christy Taylor with sound by Bill Larsen.

It is that time of the year, and now that it is December 1st I can get into the holiday spirit. I, actually, did just that on Tuesday. Remember how nasty and rainy it was? Well, around 4 p.m. I took off for downtown Rehoboth for some holiday spirit lifting at Christmas Spirit. The store in Rehoboth Beach is an institution, having been at the Beach for 33 years. The one is Ocean City? Not that far behind with 22 years.

I thought as I came in that the store looked great. Jill Hudson, the Manager, told me they had a great week-end. So many people in town were here for the Thanksgiving Holiday, shopping, and enjoying such a gorgeous time in November.
The shop has many themes, ornaments, decorations, garlands, tree skirts, and lights. There are those ornaments that are keepsakes; then, the ones that are so much fun to give to friends or to attach to a present.
     
Jill thought that the store, on that day, was picked over. I did not find it so. It was full to capacity, I thought.
I always gravitate to the coastal ornaments. I find them so pretty. Jill told me that even though she has lived here all her life, these were also her favorites.
Strolling through the store; some caught my eye more than others.
For example, there were handpainted Christmas balls by Ruth Culver from Berlin, Maryland. 25% of the proceeds will be donated for Breast Cancer Awareness.
Ne’ Qwa Art? I had never seen these ornaments. They come in a very impressive box with a certificated of authenticity, as well.
This art originated in China and it is the reverse handpaiting on the inside of mouth blown glass. It is only practiced by a few. If you would like to know more, the website is www.neqwa.com.
Many towns and cities hold their Annual Christmas Parades in the first week of December. So, here we are, and our coastal towns are ready!!

Christmas in Historic Lewes. You have read some of my posts, I hope, on this beautiful town. The people, its preservation, its restaurants, and shops. I think that when you first visit Lewes you might think that this town probably rolls its streets by 5 p.m. It really isn’t so. Lewes is full of life any time of the day. All you have to do is visit and see for yourself.
There are so many events going on in Lewes this week-end. Here is some of the information that has come my way.
Thursday, December 2nd:
Benefit – Tree Lighting – Holiday of Lights, sponsored by the Beebe Medical Foundation at 424 Savannah Rd. from 5:30 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. For more info. please visit www.beebemedicalfoundation.org.
Lewes Merchants’ 24th Annual Hospitality Night from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. in the historic commercial district surrounding Second Street.
Friday, December 3rd – The Children’s Beach House hosts their annual Art Exhibit & Sale Benefit Preview party on Friday, from 6:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m., at 1800 Bay Avenue in Lewes, with the sale continuing on Saturday and Sunday; open to the public. Zwaanendael Women’s Club – Stop in for refreshments like hot dogs, hot sausages, hot chocolate, water hot pretzels and cookies while strolling the streets on the Lewes Historical House Tour or during the old-fashioned Christmas Parade. 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.
The 79th Annual Lewes Christmas Parade will take place on this day at 5:00 p.m. Honorary Grand Marshal of the Christmas Parade will be the Lewes in Bloom Organization. This is in honor of their beautification efforts in Lewes since 2002, and to recognize their third, First Place finish in the national contest sponsored by America in Bloom.
Rain or Snow date for the parade will be Sunday, 12/5 at the same time.
The theme for this year’s parade is Mistletoe & Holly. The parade will begin on Savannah Rd. in front of the Ninth Grade Academy and will end in front of King’s Ice Cream Shop on Second Street.
The Christmas Tree in Zwaanendael Park will be illuminated after the Christmas parade, followed by candlelight caroling in the park. A reception with hot cider and cookies will follow in the Fisher Martin House.
