Meet the ladies behind Chicks for Charity Southern Delaware. On the left is Kari Ainsworth, and on the right is Marcie Urgo. Both of them support the charitable organizations in Southern Delaware and on July of 2010 they decided to start their own. On the first charity dinner, there were only about 20 or 25 people. They knew that was a start; taking those first baby steps. Congratulations!! 4 years making a difference in the community!
Chicks for Charity….thrilled to announced that they have surpassed the goals they set themselves to achieve on that July of 2010. Last night, July 15th, look at the crowds…..and take notice….guys were in attendance!!
Once a month Chicks for Charity holds a charitable dinner at Fish On, located at the Villages of Five Points in Lewes, Delaware. For $25.00 you will get a buffet dinner with appetizer and dessert. There is also a Cash Bar available. And, a 50/50 plus raffle items!!

Over the past years some of the organizations that have benefited have been: Dogs for the Blind, MS Delaware, Justin’s Beach House, The Rehoboth Beach Boys & Girls Club, Habitat for Humanity AmeriCorp Volunteers, Global Delaware and many others including July’s 2014 Alex’s Lemonade Stand.
Tuesday evening brought the children to fundraise for Alex’s Lemonade Stand. This non-profit organization started years ago when a girl with cancer by the name of Alexandra “Alex” Scott decided to start fundraising so that doctors could find a cure for childhood cancer. She passed away in 2004 but her family continues in this effort. At the moment over $80 million have been raised throughout the United States…..as the saying goes “When life throws you lemons….it is time to make Lemonade”. More info? The tables were full of raffle items ranging from restaurant certificates, jewelry, services, and plenty of items for the young ones, as well.
Mingling, chatting, and meeting new friends, while raising funds for those that are underserved, and in need. That’s what these evenings are all about; plain and simple.

Grace is now 10 and is cancer free!! Her sister Abby and her friend, Carly, work Alex’s Lemonade Stand in the area. Please take notice that on Saturday, August 2nd, at the Toy Store in Rehoboth Beach, they will be serving Lemonade to those thirsty visitors and residents. You will also find them on Wednesday, August 10th, at the Grub Grocer on Rehoboth Avenue, and later on Saturday, September 13th, they will be at Giant on Coastal Highway. When you see the following sign, please stop by, have a glass of lemonade, knowing that you are helping to find a cure for childhood cancers.

Animal friendly cuisine, the benefits of choosing plant based foods. I wanted to learn more. Then, I came upon the card that announced an upcoming new festival in Rehoboth Beach….VegFest! It would be a vegetarian celebration at the Beach. It would feature speakers, cooking demonstrations, samples, exhibitors, food vendors and a little something for everyone…loved the vegetable garden, including the sensory garden where kids could touch and feel what was growing.
The festival was sponsored by Compassion Over Killing (COK), a national non-profit animal protection organization based in Washington,DC. COK has another office in Los Angeles. In Rehoboth Beach you will find a social and outreach organization called VegRehoboth, a sister sponsor to this outdoor festival. It is open to all residents and visitors to our beaches. Even if you have that curiosity. Some people want to cut back, some are vegetarians, vegans, and some called themselves part-time vegetarians. VegFest was held on a hot day but with a nice breeze. Tents were set up to accommodate the speakers and cooking demonstrations.
One of the speakers, Dr. Ruby Lathon who is a holistic health and wellness expert is an advocate for plant based nutrition. She made a couple of dishes, one in particular, caught my attention. Continued on my VegFest strolling, I stopped next at Rehoboth Beach Pet Sitting Service. This, in your own home, pet care service has been in the area for a couple of years. It is called MERR, and that was by next stop. This is a non-profit stranding and rehabilitation organization completely committed to marine mammal and sea turtle rescue and conservation. They are first responders for stranded mammals and sea turtles. Their new automobile license plate is now available. The Delaware SPCA – Georgetown Shelter is very active. Their available dogs for adoption are always out and about, trying to find their forever home. And, they were at VegFest. My New Year’s resolution this year was not to make any. It is easier that way. You don’t have to feel so guilty a couple of days later when the diet goes out the window. If I had made a resolution; dieting would have been the one. I am always on some diet or another.
But no, I think this year I want a little bit more. I want to imagine myself waking up rested, thinking clearly, full of energy and interest in the day ahead. So, I was excited to find an invite on Facebook. It said something like “Are Sugar Blues getting you Down?” Hmm, sounded interesting. This time of the year is the quietest at the Delaware Beaches. I love it because is a time to recharge those batteries; to kick back and relax. There is still plenty to do. The beaches are not dead by any means. Starting the year over with this event, perfect!!
Then, I saw that Kari Ainsworth, LMT, IC, CHHC, was going to be giving the talk. This event was going to be taking place at The Birch Tree Cafe, located inside Good Earth Market at 31826 Good Earth Lane, Clarksville, DE 19970. This is 4.8 miles west of Bethany Beach, on Rt. 26.
The Birch Tree Cafe is a 100% Gluten Free restaurant. Chef and Owner is Cathy Berzins. They carry soups, coffees, lattes, salads, quiches, sandwiches, muffins and gluten free baked goods.

I was not sure how many people were going to be attending. Afterall, the holidays were just a thing of the past. But, guess what? It was crowded. Saw a few familiar faces, as well.

Kari introduced herself and talked a little about her professional journey. I think, everyone that was present sort of knew what they needed to do. But, just like me, we also needed to learn more and have someone give us that extra push.
When Kari asked what were our favorite “sugar treats” when growing up, I did not speak up. I did not want to date myself. I did love Mary Janes, pix at stix (don’t even know how to spell it) and a few others that I want to forget now.
Nicotine is to cigarettes as sugar is to food. An addiction. The more you have, the more you want. I could not believe that there are 15 teaspoons in a 20 ounce bottle of Coke. Yikes!
The ups and crashes of sugar. Feeling great and then crashing…start over.
Sugar is an inflammatory food. They are even relating it to high cholesterol.
Someone said ” I feel like I want a cookie or something at 7 p.m.” Kari gave ideas on how to prevent those cravings. A lot has to do with television commercials and other shows. But, also a lot of times we eat because we are thirsty. So please drink up your water.
Food changes everything. The way you feel, your attitude, your skin, and how well you sleep.
