“Those who are happiest are those who do the most for others.”  booker t. washington

With that quote I begin my post by reminding you that Delaware is a Small Wonder with a Big Heart.  Fundraising events happen all year round, but it seems that as the Second Season takes hold of all of us living in Southern Delaware, we set records for fundraising.  It is incredible the amount of money raised to help others.

I got an invite to a Kick Off Party for the Southern Delaware Wine, Food and Music Festival which will take place on Saturday, October 17th (noon until 4:30 p.m.) at Independence Hall located at 23767 Samuel Adams Circle in Millsboro, Delawared.  Even though the address is Millsboro, it is, actually, closer to the beaches.

DSCN0349DSCN0350

The Kick Off Party took place at (a)Muse on Baltimore Avenue in Downtown Rehoboth Beach, on Thursday, 9/17.  My friend, Susan DiMondi came with me to see what all the commotion was all about.

Let me tell you a little about What is Going On…

This event is being billed as the “ultimate wine, food and music event on DelMarVa”.  It will be hosted by former Bad Company bassist, now food, wine and music aficionado, Paul Cullen.  It will be a fun and refined afternoon of food, beer and wine samplings and pairings, cooking demos, and a great musical line-up.

This is a benefit for Rotary’s Global Polio Eradication Initiative and Lewes-Rehoboth Meals on Wheels.

This is an inaugural SoDelFest.  The culinary Theater will host the chef showcases/demos, where you will find Neil Fuentes, The Singing Chef and Food Rewrapped Champion and 5 of our top local chefs including: Hari Cameron, Lion Gardner, Doug Ruley, Ronnie Burkle and Sean Correa.

The festival will also offer wine and food pairings with 13 local restaurants including; Abbot’s Grille, Bluecoast, Seafood Grill, Bramble and Brine, Cultured Pearl, Grandpa 9Mac), JD Shuckers, Lupo’s Italian Kitchen, Michy’s Relaxed Dining, Nage, Palate, Semra’s, Summerhouse and Touch of Italy.

You will be able to experience the Man Cave….don’t worry we are all welcome for cocktails, a raw bar and Cigars!  Join Rob Bagle from Bramble & Brine and representatives from Wigle Whiskey, Dad’s Hat, Benromach Scotch, George’s Bloody Mary Mix (a new local favorite from Berline, Maryland) and 16 Mile Brewery.  There may just be oyster shooters there!

30 wines will be offered by Teller Wines and the distributors for pairing and additional tastes.  Dogfish Head and Mispillion Breweries will be pouring their fall favorites at the bar!

There will be 2 special wine education seminars in the Wine University; Mike Zygmonski (Level II Sommelier, Sodel Concepts) will present a blind tasting and John McDonald (Wine Columnist, Cape Gazette) will present Wine 101 for anyone who wants to learn about the art of Wine Tasting.

General Admission tickets are $75 and there is a VIP upgrade that includes two special tastings at 95+ point wines and exclusive cheeses and a seat on-stage during one of the chef showcases.  The press is invited at no charge with advance notice.  Please visit http://www.sodelfest.com

Arriving at (a)Muse Susan and I were invited to taste some of the wines offered by Sposato.  For 6 years the Sposato Family researched, studied and visited South America.  In 2012 the family purchased their farm in the heart of Argentina’s wine country, Mendoza.

DSCN0340

Based on their 23 years of experience in working with land, soil irrigation and plants, by running their top rated landscape company, Sposato Landscape Co., they saw this as a great opportunity to further their experience in the agriculture industry.  The farm was purchased as virgin ground.  A new irrigation system, electric and other improvements have been installed with more to come.

The farm is 250 acreas located in the foothills of the Andes Mountains, 3,000 ft. above sea level.  Sposato Family Vineyard has some of the best and most popular wineries in Argentina as neighbors.  The farm is located between two notable wineries, Bodega Septima and Vina Cobos by Paul Hobbs with more just around the corner.

DSCN0345

We tasted 2015 Chardonnay.  This fruit focused Chardonnay has an attractive color with aromas of tropical fruit, apples and peaches.  Also a 2015 Sauvignon Blanc, from their prize winning high elevation vineyards has aromas of grapefruit, passion fruit, herbs, species and orange blossom notes that are persistent through the finish.  The 2013 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon has intense red with blue shades. Another one was their 2013 Reserve Malbec…intense violet color, typical of Argentine Malbec.  And the 2014 Malbec had deep purple color, with high intensity of black fruits, raspberries and violets.  Please note that you can get the wines in the Rehoboth Beach and Lewes area.

A presentation was given by all of those that are involved and making sure that this will be an unforgettable event.

Survivors Across Sussex, 16 Mile Relay Event, Cancer Survivors Rock!, Block Party, Fundraising Event, Cancer Support Community, Saturday, June 13th, Our Team? 16 Miles or BUST, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

dscn5439

I was waiting for my Venti Cafe Mocha Extra Hot, at Starbucks on Coastal Highway in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, when the poster caught my attention.  I, usually, do take pictures of posters advertising events here or there.  I looked at it for some time, while my daily addiction was being brewed.  I posted it on my personal Facebook page….then, one of my friends mentioned about walking it.  Another also mentioned the same and added that if we made a team she would join.

As I was walking out of the chiropractor’s office I decided that this would be a good challenge.

June is cancer survivors month.  We all have so many people impacted by cancer.  The courage of the ones fighting is so impressive.  Lifechanging, really.

Cancer Support Community Delaware is located at 18947 John J. Williams Highway (Rt. 24), Suite 312, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.  Website?  http://www.cancersupportdelaware.org.  Tel. 302-645-9150.

Their mission is “to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action and sustained by the community”.  It was established in 1982 and all services are provided free of charge.  Funds raised in Delaware, stay in Delaware.

I love our team’s name:  16 Miles or BUST

Survivors Across Sussex is a Premier 16 Mile Relay Event.  You can decide what you want to do.  Either form a team, walk in a relay, walk it yourself or even just donate money to support one of the teams.  Hopefully, you will choose ours. This event is open to anyone and everyone who would like to Celebrate Cancer Survivors, Honor someone in the fight, or walk in memory of a loved one.

To register please visit http://www.cancersupportdelaware.org.  Click on the Walking Legs.  Once the website opens, scroll down to where it says Register Online.  There, you can join a team, or register yourself.  If joining our team, please type 16 Miles or BUST and the Password is DE Challenge.  It is that easy.

On Saturday our team will be early at the Tunnell Cancer Center on Rt. 24 or John J. Williams Highway.  The walk begins at 7:30 a.m. but before that, at 7:00 a.m. there will be an Opening Ceremony.

You can walk the whole 16 miles, or just one mile…….remember that 16 Mile Brewery will be waiting for all walkers and visitors for their Cancer Suvivors Rock? Block Party.  Live music, food trucks, vendors, and a special and unique beer brewed by 16 Mile!!

The Corvette Club will be in charge of transporting walkers through the 16 miles.  Tired at one?  Then, meet the rest at the 16 Mile Brewery.

Note:  If you have registered for a team you will need to raise a minimum of $500 to stay as a team……please donate to 16 Miles or BUST.  You can visit the website above mentioned and go through the steps and halfway down the site there is a way to click and donate to your favorite team…US!!

You can also just click on the website and donate.  All you have to do is choose the team.  You can call Morgan at 302-645-9150 and she can help you with your donation.  Credit cards are accepted.

Our team members are : 3 Debbies, Cindi, Raven, Jamin, Ryan, Gloria (moi), Jessica, and Brenda, so far.

dscn5440

Let’s say you do not want to walk.  You just want to party.  Very easy.  The party is $20 and $10 of your ticket fee will be donated to the Cancer support Community of Sussex County tohelp support family, friends, and neighbors that are going through cancer.

16 Mile Brewery is located at 412 South Bedford St. in Georgetown, Delaware.  The party begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m.  The Cancer Survivors Rock! Block Party will feature live music, food trucks, vendors, and BEER!!  There will be Beachcombers Corvette Show, $1 Basketball Shoot Game, $5 Ribbons Pick-em Game, and a Cornhole Tournament that will be taking place at Noon.  Shoot….I will be missing that one.  I won’t be there until about 1:30 p.m…..walking!

Hope you can join all of us as we challenge ourselves….it will be hot!  What better way to celebrate Survivors and those you know who have been touched by cancer?

Note:  2 of our walkers are Survivors!!

Day Tripping!! Scottish Highland Creamery, Oxford, Maryland, Oxford’s Picket Fences, Fundraising, Maryland’s Eastern Shore

dscn5338

I scream for Ice Cream!!  I love ice cream.  It is my donwfall.  I really don’t keep it in the freezer, no way!!  My problem is that I usually do not discriminate.  I can have a Frosty or I can have the best homemade ice cream in the world.  Which is why I am writing this post today….and passing the info. to you.

A couple of posts back I wrote about the Robert Morris Inn in Oxford, Maryland.  No dessert was needed after our fab. lunch….we were walking towards the Scottish Highland Creamery located at 314 Tilghman St., Tel. 410-924-6298.  Website?  http://www.scottishhighlandcreamery.com.  If you are on Facebook, check them out there, as well.

dscn5341

Oxford is usually pretty quiet in the middle of the week.  The Creamery always has a line.  I have to admit it; this is the best ice cream ever!!  It is so good.  Fresh ingredients with flavorings imported from Italy.  They also have sugar free and gluten free ice cream.  Note:  They do cater parties!!

dscn5343

My usual suspects, the 2 Debbies and I had the following….Please do remember that only cash or checks are accepted.  From left to right….2 scoops each.  Italian Lemon Cookie with Coffee Hazelnut Crunch on the bottom.  Both had very distinct flavors with bits and pieces of cookie and hazelnut crunch.  Next was strawberry on top of vanilla.  And last was Coffee Hazelnut Crunch on top of Pomegranate!!  And, you know how ice cream prices take you to the poor house?  The Creamery is very affordable!!   Voted “Best of the Eastern Shore.”

dscn5349

We sat down to enjoy our delish sweet ending, overlooking one beautiful scenic town.

dscn5352

Oxford’s Picket Fences are Up!!

This is a fundraising event…Since 2009 picket fences have been painted by local artists.  The fences are displayed around the town of Oxford; smaller ones are usually inside businesses and the larger ones are outdoors scattered through downtown.  You can vote for them, but you will have to wait until the end of the summer when they will be auctioned off. Residents that have bought them in the past display them with pride.

dscn5355

Artists paint them and offer proceeds to a charity chosen by them.  Please visit http://www.portofoxford.com, then click on Special Events.  You will be able to see the picket fences for 2015.  Here a few of them:

No Dogs Allowed – By Maggii Sarfati.  Charity:  Talbot Humane Society.  You can find this fence at the Scottish Highland Creamery.

dscn5340

The next one is Forward and AFT by Sean Wells.  Charity:  Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.  You can find this beautiful one at the Oxford-Bellevue Ferry Dock.

dscn5364

Land of Pleasant Living is a smaller picket fence painted by Bible Praire and Prayers Painters.  Charity:  Character Counts Mid Shore, Inc.  You will find this one inside Benson & Mangold’s Window.

dscn5361

Have a great day!!

Destination? A Taste of Finer Things, Fundraising Event, Live Entertainment, Coastal Hospice at the Ocean, Harrison’s Harbor Watch, Ocean City, Maryland, The Paring of Fine Foods & Fine Wine for a Cause!!

“Fundraising is the gentle art of teaching the joy of giving.”  hank rosso

With that in mind I headed south from Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, to meet my friends, Cindi and Ross, for a night of fundraising in Ocean City, Maryland.

dscn4564

It is so interesting to see this town at this time of the year.  It is so quiet, but not for long.  Beachgoers will be here soon enough and they will be creating their memories at the beach.  This most southern part of Downtown Ocean City is where Trimper Rides is located.  It was just featured in Strange Inheritances.  Trimper Rides is a family owned and operated business located in prime real estate in O.C.  Not to see the lights and the laughing and screaming visitors is a sight to be seen.

dscn4563

For a few years…I will call them, the movers and shakers in Ocean City, Maryland, have been diligently fundraising for a much needed hospice facility in the area.  Together they are building the funds in order for construction to begin.  They need $5,000,000.  Already they have $3,000,000 thanks to the generosity of all in the communities.

dscn4613

“Hospice patients most often choose to remain at home.  However, a growing number find that at the end of life they are unable to manage alone or need more than a frail spouse can provide.  Suddenly, home is no longer the safest place to receive hospice care.”  Coastal Hospice at the Ocean will serve the Lower Shore region.  For more information, please visit http://www.coastalhospice.org.  Or, please call Maureen McNeill, the Director of Development at 410-641-5481.

dscn4565

dscn4566

Unreal to see the award winning Boardwalk this quiet!!  Inside Harrison’s Harbor Watch the mood was anything but quiet.  It was a festive event with about 225 in attendance.

dscn4607

Harrison’s Habor Watch is located at 806 S. Atlantic Ave., overlooking the Inlet and Assateague Island.  This is the southern end of the Boardwalk.

dscn4590

Having fun while raising funds…the main focus of the evening.  Blindly choosing a bottle of wine…$20.  Raffles!

dscn4588

The live entertainment was by Lauren Glick and Mike Armstrong.

dscn4610

Seventeen of Ocean City’s restaurants brought their “A” dishes to this event.  Each station was paired with a unique wine complementing the food.

dscn4616

Oysters to start with were from Harrison’s Harbor Watch.  Plump, salty and cold!! We are by the water so having them to start our evening was a no brainer.

dscn4571

Sushi from OC Wasabi.  This was a popular station, to say the least.

dscn4573

My love affair with Fried Green Tomatoes continues.  Having these ones from Sunset Grille, topped with Crab Remoulade, well, what can I say….awesome!!

dscn4576

They had just brought out the warm crab dip from Crabs to Go…paired with a light Prosecco.

dscn4580

dscn4581

One of my favorite tapas of the evening….Embers/Blu Tuna Tartare Tacos, and, Smoked Salmon Napoleon.  The tuna, the lime, the cilantro and the presentation…great.

dscn4586

dscn4585

Touch of Italy has been in Ocean City for the past year.  Love that they always take their time to teach their customers about what they offer.

dscn4592

Hooked offered a terrific combination of Basil Scented Tuna.

dscn4595

dscn4594

Barn 34…what a great job!!  Two complete different offerings.  The stuffed dates…the combination of salt and sweetness.  Never fails.  Can’t wait to have them again.  The shrimp stuffed with cheese were also awesome!!

dscn4598

dscn4600

dscn4599

Spring Lamb from the Atlantic Hotel in Berlin.  I like mint sauce vs. mint jelly, though.  Very good indeed.

dscn4604

dscn4603

I usually do not eat eggs for breakfast, but deviled eggs are a different thing altogether.  These were Smoked Salmon Deviled Eggs!!  The Cucumber Cups with Spicy Crab Dip….can’t wait for summer.  This was presented by Seacrets!

dscn4605

dscn4606

My last tasting was of Crab Guacamole served with Fresh Tortilla Chips from the Captain’s Table.

dscn4608

dscn4609

Sweet Ending Desserts!!

Sweet Dispositions offered:  Pecan Diamonds, Key Lime Tartlettes, and White Chocolate, Macademia Nut Cookies!!

dscn4617

dscn4619

dscn4618

dscn4620

Desserts by Rita had assorted Cupcakes!!

dscn4622

Wockenfuss Candies….Now, take a look at the elegant Chocolate Covered Strawberries!!

dscn4624

Tasting, sipping continued for a few hours.  It was a total success!!

dscn4625

Cindi, Ross, and I decided that it was time to hit the road…..but not before Cindi showed us that Wine is a Girl’s best friend!!

dscn4627

Note:  It was about 9:30 p.m….look at the Boardwalk!!  Not one person.

dscn4634

Chowdown For Charity, Next Gen South, Delaware Community Foundation, Fundraising Event, Southern Delaware, Kent & Sussex Counties, Food Tasting, Voting, Wall of Wine, Silent Auction, Fun=Fundraising, Same Time Next Year!!

dscn3496

Here we were, the usual suspects….we do have a younger suspect, Jade!!  We were ready to Chowdown for Charity, an event that took place on Friday, February 6th, at Baywood Greens Golf Course in Long Neck, Delaware.  It was an evening of food tasting, voting and mingling.  Much loved local chefs were cooking for a cause….Next Gen South of the Delaware Community Foundation, http://www.delcf.org. This is a non-profit board of young professionals from Kent & Sussex Counties that was founded in 2012.

Next Gen South selects an area of focus every 2 years based on what is needed in our communities.  Presently, the focus is and has been for the past 2 years, Children’s Mental Health.  This is one fundraising event that lets this organization award grants to local organizations on an annual basis.  Next Gen South might be young but in 2014 they awarded $15,000 to:  Delaware Guidance Services, Delaware State University, The Seaford House.

dscn3497

Chefs were ready for the guests….remember we were given 3 tickets to put on our favorites.  A friendly competition would be taking place.

dscn3471dscn3474

ABBOTT’S ON BROAD CREEK – This restaurant is located in Laurel; http://www.abbottsgrillde.com.  It is a sister restaurant to Abbot’s Grill in Milford.  Chef Ryan Cunningham was serving Smoked Strip Loin with a Scallop Vinaigrette & Coriander Popcorn.

dscn3472

Loved the addition of the popcorn to the tender beef.  Ryan asked us to come to Laurel for a real treat this year.

dscn3476

a(MUSE.) – Located in Dowtown Rehoboth Beach, http://www.amuse-rehoboth.com.  Hari was hard at work, but always explaining exactly what he is cooking.  Pumpernickel Pasta?  OMG!! This pasta tasted just like pumpernickel bread.  You had to be there to experience it, but Hari said he has it at the restaurant, among other amazing tasting pasta flavors.  It was served with Brussel Sprouts, Pastrami Beef Cheek, Charred Onion & Pickled Mustard Seed.

dscn3475

The pasta was cooked to perfection and the other flavors complemented already a winning central ingredient.

dscn3479

LUPO DI MARE – Located in Downtown Rehoboth Beach, http://www.lupodimarerehoboth.com.  This restaurant is part of the family of SODEL Concepts restaurants and started by the late and much missed Matt Haley.

dscn3478

They were serving Rustic Meatballs, Parmesan Polenta with Tomato Gravy.  I can’t make a good meatball, so always enjoy little morsels like these ones.  They did tell us that this was not their signature meatball…prepared exclusively for this event.

dscn3477

PAPA GRANDE’S – Two locations:  Downtown Rehoboth Beach and Fenwick Island.  A Delaware coastal taqueria.  http://www.papagrandes.com/rehoboth.  Papa Grande’s is also part of the SODEL family of restaurants.

dscn3483

I love Scrapple!!  And, this is what they were serving…House Scrapple Tostada, Hibiscus Jelly, Apple Radish Jimaca Salad, Corn Chip.  Having had their scrapple taco last year….of course just by looking at these tostadas, I knew they were going to have an awesome taste.

dscn3482

They asked if we had had their Duck Scrapple….and that they were planning on a crab scrapple this summer….can’t wait.

dscn3485

THE BRICK HOTEL RESTAURANT & TAVERN – Located in Georgetown on The Circle, http://www.brickhotelrestaurant.com.  The chefs were serving Black Cherry Braised Beef with a Root Vegetable Puree & Roasted Brussels Sprouts.

dscn3486

The black cherry flavored was detected on the braised beef.  It was cooked in a 250 degree oven for 6 hours.  It melted in your mouth.  Totally delish!

dscn3484

THE WALL OF WINE –  This has become very popular at events.  Wine aficionados love it….more so if they get a prized bottle of wine.  You pay $20 and then get to choose a wrapped bottle of wine from the wall.  You might get the $10 bottle or a very expensive bottle.  A ticket was also given for a raffle….a bottle of Dom Perignon at the end of the evening!!

dscn3487

BAYWOOD CLUBHOUSE RESTAURANT – Located in Long Neck, http://www.baywoodgreens.com/restaurant.

dscn3492

Stuffed Pork Pinwheel!! Pop them in your mouth.  They would be perfect for a party.

dscn3491

NAGE BISTRO & WINE BAR – Located on Coastal Highway (Rt. 1) in Rehoboth Beach, http://www.nagerb.com.

dscn3494

This pastrami was made out of tuna, on a pumpernickel crouton, caraway sauerkraut, spicy mustard….definitely one of my true favorites of the evening.

dscn3493

Next stop?  BETHANY BLUES, LEWES…Located on Costal Highway (Rt. 1), http://www.bethanyblues.com/lewes.

dscn3502

I love St. Louis Ribs more than any other rib.  That’s what they were serving.  Smoked St. Louis Ribs, caramelized in a Habanero Apple Cider, served with a Jalapeno Slaw.  Got those tastebuds dancing immediately!!

dscn3500

dscn3501

TOUCH OF ITALY – A trattoria, salumeria and pasticeria….http://www.touchofitaly.com.  These restaurants can be found in Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, and Ocean City, Maryland.

dscn3505

Making mozzarella…it looked time consuming, but also relaxing.  Take a look.

dscn3507dscn3503

dscn3506

Smaller mozzarella balls were served with rosemary and EVOO!!

dscn3509

ESPUMA RESTAURANT & MARTINI BAR – Located in Downtown Rehoboth Beach, http://www.espuma-restaurant.com Chef Jay Caputo was serving Spanish Style Clam Chowder topped with Potato Foam and Scallion Powder.

dscn3510

The biscuits were filled with the creamy, and well seasoned clam chowder.  I liked it a lot.

dscn3508

Love this tapas eating style….grazing here or there!!  We tried them all!!  Next!!

dscn3512

FINS FISH HOUSE & RAW BAR – In Downtown Rehoboth Beach and with a sister restaurant on Coastal Highway, http://www.finsrawbar.com.  Another time consuming dish is making risotto.

dscn3511

FINS did a great job with their Crab & Shrimp Risotto.  It was delicious!!

dscn3513

LAST STOP!!

dscn3515

THE ROOKERY – Located in Milford…2 golf course locations, Milton and Milford, http://www.rookerygolf.com.  We finished our Chowdown with a treat of Ahi Tuna with a Ginger Lime Soy, served over a Seaweed Salad, Cucumber & Wasabi Tobiko.  Excellent ending!!

dscn3514

We then continued to listen to DJ Jimmy Young, who provided great entertaining throughout the evening.  Plenty of items on the silent auction raising funds for a great cause.

Have a good one!!

THE WINNER?  a(MUSE.)  Congratulations!!

Southern Delaware is a great place for fundraising events.  Children & Families First has 2 important events to raise funds during the year.  The first one happened to be in May.  I will be sure to let you know next year the information because it was so much fun this year when the event called Brunch & Bubbly was hosted by the Lewes Yacht Club in Lewes, Delaware.

Basically, it was a brunch and shopping event with a percentage of the proceeds going to Children & Families First.  Local shops gathered through the room and guests were able to shops to their hearts delight. In this photo Jane & Georgie is showcased.

You could stop and sip bubbly and have something to eat…meet and chat with others that gathered on a beautiful day in Lewes.  The Lewes Yacht Club outdid itself with great food.  I am showing you this so that you can take a peek at the type of event that Children & Families First offers to the communities of Southern Delaware.
