Friendships, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Restaurants, The Back Porch, a(Muse), Downtown Rehoboth Beach, Summer 2018, Chicken Wings, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware, SODE, Sussex County

Many years ago when I first came to the Delaware Beaches, Bethany Beach became my home for a long time.  My first friendships were made there.  Over the years life happens.  Happyness, marriages, children, grandchildren, divorces, and yes, even death have impacted our lives.  New friends have been made but you always remember those first ones.  We were so young then.

Deveraux is one of those friends that then moved out of town.  We still text or call during our birthdays in March, but we have not been together much.  This week-end she came to Rehoboth Beach.  Oh yes, this rainy weekend, so no beach time for us but plenty of activity, eating and catching up did happen.

Friday was going to be the best day so she arrived by lunch time.  Arriving in Downtown Rehoboth Beach, we were hungry.  Something light is what we wanted.  We decided on The Back Porch.  This restaurant is one of the oldest restaurants in Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  Liked by many and in competition with plenty of other restaurants in town.  I had not been there in quite a few years.

Deveraux had the Seared Day Scallops, Thai Red Curry, and Sesame Noodles.  She loved this dish.

I had the Burrata Salad, which was light and very good.  Would have loved to have had it topped with scallops or something else but there were no changes to be made at The Back Porch.  I can see if the restaurant was crowded but with only a couple of people having lunch at 2 p.m. what would have been the big deal?  Go figure.

Happy Hour at my house with Annie visiting from Bethany Beach.  Deveraux had made marinated Chicken Wings…Gluten Free.  Easy fixing.  First cook the wings in oil in a 350 degree oven for 20 minutes. Then make a marinade of Whiskey, brown sugar and mustard.  You can mix different kinds of mustards.  Then marinade for at least 24 hours.  Put them in the oven at 400 degrees for about half hour or so.  Check them and if you like them well done then you know what you need to do.

Friday really was a perfect day.  Our next stop was going to be a(Muse), located on Baltimore Ave. in Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  This restaurant is great for foodies.  If you are one of those people that want quantity vs. quality, then this might not be an eatery for you.  All we wanted was to graze.  A little bit of this or a little bit of that.

Two different types of Rose for us.  One dryer than the other.  Perfect.

People stuff squash blossoms.  This is what they would look like.

We share the Smoked Salmon Squash Blossoms.  Dill, croutons, and heirloom tomatoes.  Love, Love!

We also ordered a salad of Baby Kale, boquerones, pine nuts, golden raisins, lemon vinaigrette dressing and parmesan cheese.  Boquerones are originally from Spain.  I think they are delicious. They are fresh anchovies, marinated in vinegar.

Our next shareable was the Middleneck Clams…they had country ham, tomatillo, and green tomato.  I had a problem with this dish.  It look so beautiful and appetizing.  But, it really was too spicy and you could not taste the steamed clams.  And yes, we did tell our server.  Usually you would have liked to dip bread in this sauce, but not this time.  Honestly said, hopefully they took the hint.

The pasta with Maryland Crab, heirloom tomato, celery and fennel was a dish we really ennjoyed and wished we would have ordered the whole portion instead of the half.  You could have this with a salad and be pretty content.

Our sweet ending of 3 scoops of our choice of ice cream was truly excellent.  Made in house.  They were delicious.  One was a Brie Ice Cream, a Vanilla, and I cannot remember the other.

We took off for the Bandstand to listen to the last of the music.

And last but not least…..Funland to play Whack a Mole.  This is a tradition and a must.  Sorry Deveraux, but I had to put you on the blog.

And so our weekend did continue.  Sometimes there is no friend like an old friend.  These types of friendships are the comfort food of our relationships.

Talk to you later.

Blogging, AboutMyBeaches, Friendships, Fins Ale House & Raw Bar, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches, It was a Silly Day, It was an Awesome Day! A Little Bit of This, A Little Bit of That for Sure!!

“Friendship is not something you learn in school.  But if you haven’t learned the meaning of friendship, you really haven’t learned anything.”  muhammad ali

That statement sets the tone for my post tonight.  Starting AboutMyBeaches years ago has been great.  In reality, it is my diary.  Anyone that knows me can check where I am anytime.  It is that simple.  The idea of my blog started because I think I am a frustrated concierge.  Bla bla and more bla.  I do have some good information, I think.

My friends put up with me when we go to restaurants.  I take photos all the time.  They usually order different entrees so that I have more to talk about.  My friends are priceless.  They know who they are.  They are there any time I need them.  They also know how to give me space.

I am still celebrating my birthday.  I might as well embrace the passing of time.  Today, Jody and Debbie got together with me.  We had our manis and pedis, had coffee at Starbucks then headed to see Focus, the new movie with Will Smith.  You can tell it is still winter/spring at the beach…..look at the photo in the movie theater at Movies at Midway at 4:30 p.m.  Lol!!  You would have thought it was a private screening.

Off to grab an early dinner at Fins Ale House & Raw Bar located at 19269 Coastal Highway in Rehoboth Beach.  Tel. 302-227–FINS.  Website?  http://www.finsrawbar.com.  Jamison, our server, took care of us in a special way.  We walked in with presents so he new we were celebrating.

The Balsamic Glazed Salmon Debbie ordered and loved.

Jody ordered their Chopped Salad and topped it with grilled chicken.

After all my dining in Charleston last week I decided that 2 appetizers would be the way to go.  The Seared Tuna was really good. No, it was perfect.

dscn4085

And when I saw the Fried Green Tomatoes…..I “gotta” have them.  I am on a fried green tomato journey.  They were awesome.  I could have had just that for dinner.  Hope they keep them on the menu.

When I am with my friends there is so much conversation.  You would not believe the subjects we come up with.  Attitude was a big subject tonight.  My friend Debbie brought me a writing by Charles Swindoll on Attitude.  It comments about the attitude in our lives the longer we live.  That we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day.  That we cannot change our past or the fact that people will act in a certain way.  Also that we cannot change the inevitable.  It ends with “And so it is with you, we are in charge of our attitudes”.

Another topic of conversation was how people find each other.  My take is that anyone that really wants to find you, can.  I did not have to wait too long because checking for my messages on my phone I saw something on my AboutMyBeaches email address…..it was my old college roommate.  I have not seen her since 1972.  I might have spoken to her in 1976.  Her name was Carolyn de Lima and she was from Syracuse.  Her family owned Paul de Lima Coffee at the time.  So surprised to hear from her.  She had been in Puerto Rico and was looking for me.  We have not talked yet.  I just sent her an email.  How nice!!

Connections continue as another friend that lives in Portland is, as I type this post, staying in my apartment in San Juan…..have not seen her since the early 1970s, as well.

So, you see, if you want to find someone….you really can.

So quiet in my house tonight….taking it all in.  What a nice day.  See you later.

Note:  I still have posts from Charleston.

Thank You All for Making my Getting one Year Older Bearable!!

My blog is my diary.  To some it might be interesting and even helpful at times.  But, this short post is to give thanks to all my friends that helped getting a little older more enjoyable and fun.

All of you that wished me Happy Birthday in so many ways and in 3 languages, believe me when I tell you that is was so appreciated.  Good to hear from so many friends, some of you go way back.

I got plenty of cards too….my first one was so funny.  I hope to get to that age graciously.

Then, the doorbell started ringing and flowers were coming in.  They were all gorgeous.

dscn2513

And just as I put it on Facebook; well, well, well my dentists and their crew sent me beautiful flowers.  Maplewood Dental Associates is located in Rehoboth Beach.  Check their website, http://www.rehobothbeachsmiles.com. Thanks to Steve, Bruce, Renee and the rest.

dscn2527

A friend asked?  How much work did you have done?  Another said that if her dentist would send her flowers, she would go more often.   Haha.  You have to remind them about those most important dates in your life.  Getting flowers from your dentist is the ultimate.

The rest of the flowers are scattered through the house.  They were from family and friends.

The celebration was not over just yet.  We decided to meet another birthday girl, Shelley, in Ocean City, Maryland, for crabs.  We chose the Crab Bag; they were extra large, heavy and at this time of the year, from North Carolina.  They had just come in.  Their website?  www.thecrabbag.com

And to finish a most delightful evening…..gosh, that Moon was awesome!!  Thanks.
