What’s Going On? Puttin’ On The Ritz, Event, 23rd Year Anniversary Celebration, Fun-Fundraising, Atlantic General Hospital, Meet Me at the “Speakeasy”, Berlin, Maryland, Maryland’s Eastern Shore

DSCN3464

I could not believe it!! No rain! Can you imagine?  We have been so inundated with rain that I was not sure how this event was going to turn out.  But, as it happens, on Thursday, May 19th, the skies were clear, the moon and the stars were out and the location was mesmerizing.

DSCN3426

It was going to be a celebration of the 23rd year anniversary of Atlantic General Hospital located at 9733 Healthway Dr., Berlin, MD 21811.  Tel. 410-641-1100.  Website?  http://www.atlanticgeneral.org.

We were meeting at the “Speakeasy”, where the event was taking place.  This is the farm of the Host and Hostess, Mr. & Mrs. Buddy Jenkins.  Atlantic General has been celebrating its anniversaries with an annual event.  Fun and Fundraising for the hospital.  This year’s theme was the Roaring 20’s and with 500 people of their supporters, family and friends in attendance it was certainly a memorable evening.

Most of the attendees wore 1920’s dress code…..long pearls, fringes…it was a time of excess.  Games and crafted cocktails.  You picked your own glass at the entrance and fill it to your hearts desires.  The tent was huge and it was very well appointed.  The center pieces were gorgeous, as well.  No detail was left out.

LA Catering from Liquid Assets located at 94th & Coastal Highway in Ocean City, Maryland did a spectacular job with their catering.  Besides their restaurant in Ocean City their catering side of it can work magic for any of your events, small or large.  As you can see they fed 500 and there was no shortage of food throughout the evening.  Tel. 410-524-7037  Website?  http://www.ocliquidassets.com.

We are located on the eastern shore so seafood is regarded as a main staple at events.  Surrounding the Speakeasy there were stations where attendees could fill their plates and come back for more.

Dessert!!  That sweet ending that completes a meal….Have you had the doughnuts made in house at Liquid Assets?  They are to die for.  At the event they gave them a little twist.  You could customize them.  They were warm, perfect to hold in one hand or on your plate and then the sweet condiments on top.

I took a look at the cakes….could they possibly be the cakes that have been the talk of the town?  Yes!!  I could not believe it.  I am going to learn more about the two guys that are from Brooklyn and call themselves the Brooklyn Baking Barons.  The cakes featured the other night were Honey Whiskey Cakes, accompanied by local strawberries.  They were so good that at the table we all went back for seconds.  They are the perfect size…guilt free shall we say?  They will be opening a store front in Berlin, I believe on or around Memorial Week-End.  Check them on Facebook.  From their website they ship nationwide.  http://www.bkbarons.com.

Cannot wait to taste a new flavor….the Limoncello Cake with homemade Limoncello….Justin Noble, a friend of theirs said this new cake is out of this world.

It is that time of the year to fund raise at the Maryland and Delaware Beaches.  People have big hearts here.  Lucky to call it home!!

North Bethany Eats! Matt’s Fish Camp, Restaurant, Lunch, Dinner, Happy Hour, Carry Out, Bethany Beach, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware, Matt’s Fish Camp is a Supporter of Operation Seas The Day September 2nd – 7th, 2014

dscn0320

In the 1930’s the ritual of anglers dangling their reels over rivers, waiting for a bite, gave birth to fish camps along the Southern U.S.  Fish camps have become local favorites and hidden jewels, found, at times off the beaten path; no frills establishments serving fresh catch.

dscn0304

With that in mind, I am sure, Matt’s Fish Camp opened its doors in 2011 in North Bethany Beach, on Coastal Highway.  If you are driving south from Dewey Beach, Matt’s Fish Camp is the only eatery right on the highway, oceanside, until you arrive closer to Bethany Beach.  From Rehoboth to Bethany….12 miles more or less.  Tel. 302-539-2267  Website?  http://www.mattsfishcamp.com.

dscn0317dscn0315

Not really off the beaten path like the first fish camps, Matt’s Fish Camp can easily be spotten from Coastal Highway or Rt. 1.  This restaurant is part of Matt Haley Companies…with several sister restaurants at the Delaware Beaches.  No reservations, the restaurant opens at 11:30 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. every day.  Wine and beer are served at Matt’s Fish Camp.

The community where Matt’s Fish Camp is located is called Tower Shores.  It is one of the original communities right on the beach, adjacent to the State Park beaches, the Indian River Marina, and the Indian River Inlet.

dscn0306

The restaurant is casual, come as you are or get dressed up….really that’s how comfortable it is.  You can sit at the bar by the open kitchen, or by the window. Booths are available and a large center table for large parties.  Maybe even call the restaurant for carry out, because all you have to do is drive up, park and pick it up on the side.  Perfect if you are spending a day at the beach.

dscn0316

I stopped late in the day, driving from Bethany to Rehoboth, when I got a little hungry.  Something light is what I wanted.

What I did was to order a tea, a garden salad, with a side order of Lobster Salad, and….since my eyes were bigger than my hunger….I also added Lobster Deviled Eggs.

dscn0312

dscn0311

dscn0308

I had my own salad bar going on….a clean plate was ordered and this is what it looked like.  To tell you the truth I don’t eat too many eggs. But, deviled eggs, I do like.  These were traditionally made.  At first I was going to order the Lobster Roll without the roll when Reed, my server, pointed out that I could have an add on, which was just a Lobster Salad.  The garden salad was also traditionally made, and very fresh.

dscn0313

Just a perfect lunch at the beach!!

Matt’s Fish Camp is a supporter of Operation Seas The Day.  This is an annual warrior family beach week event held in Bethany Beach the week of September 2nd to the 7th for our Veterans who are recovering from injuries sustained while serving our country, and their immediate families.  A week of rest and relaxation.

The families will be staying in homes donated by local homeowners.  Plans underway for organized events, including a kickoff welcome reception, a beach bonfire/cookout, a concert at Freeman State, and a farewell brunch.

Additionally, Bethany Beach businesses and area residents have offered a “menu” of options and activities available, free of charge, throughout this week.

Restaurants in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware are more and more in tune…offering meatless Monday dinners. It is a day of the week when eating vegetables, pastas, rices, beans, and other offerings give you the opportunity to eat more “plant-based”.

I decided to take my friend, Cindi, to Modern-Mixture, located at 62A Rehoboth Avenue in Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  Tel. 302-227-0600.  Website?  http://www.modern-mixture.com.  You can find Modern-Mixture on Facebook, as well.

Modern-Mixture has been in Rehoboth for about 2 years.  It has a liquor license and it opens every day except, Tuesday.

Cindi and I decided to try 2 Meatless Monday lunches.  Leo suggested the following:

A tamal, enfrijolada, chile relleno with cheese, rice and guacamole.

dscn6931

And, the Vegan Meatloaf.  I have had this meatloaf before and really think it is delicious.  Beans, oats and sauce makes so good that you will not miss the beef.

dscn6932

Dessert was presented by Leo….It was a Chocolate Mousse Cake; light, moist with just the right amount of sweetness.

Little Fig Cakes, Modern Mixture, Spanish Custom, Cafe Con Leche….Yum!! Delaware Beaches, Rehoboth Beach, Southern Delaware, Friday, 10/8, Saturday, 10/9, Dru Tevis will be making yeast donuts, Fresh and to Order

dscn6353

I remember growing up in the Island of Puerto Rico.  The Spanish culture is one that likes to enjoy the good things in life.  The small towns in Puerto Rico, when I was growing up, were what towns throughout the U.S. are trying to achieve now….that Main Street type of atmosphere.  That sense of being able to walk the sidewalks, greet your neighbors and plenty of times, be invited for a good cup of coffe, by a neighbor or relative…Cafe con Lefche, which is coffee with milk, or a Cafe Cortado, which only has some milk, or the classic Spanish Pocillo.  The coffee would be accompanied by a sweet pastry or cake.

Which brings me to my short post.  Leo Cabrera is the owner of Modern Mixture, located at 62A Rehoboth Avenue in Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  Tel. 302-227-0600.  Website?  http://www.modern-mixture.com His restaurant is the talk of the town.  Leo serves food that is fresh, healthy and exciting.  He closes on Tuesdays and on Sundays he is open until 3 p.m.  Otherwise, he is open.  You may call him and ask him what’s cooking on that particular day.

Modern Mixture is casual and Leo prepares great specialty drinks.

So, when Leo called me to tell me that he had fig cakes for me I ran.  The cakes were made with fig jam, from the figs tha I had given him.  They were so good and brought me those memories above mentioned….particularly the coffee at my grandmother’s house.

The little fig cakes had just the right amout of sweetness…the fig jam doing its job.  A little bit of cheese, complemented the fig jam.  The consistency was light and it reminded me a bit of cheesecake….definitely lighter, though.

dscn6357

I liked them so much I decided that they belonged as a featured post.  Thank you Leo….I loved them!!  So simple and sweet.

Note:  Stop by on Friday, 10/8 and Saturday, 10/9 at Modern Mixture from 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. when Dru Tevis will be making yeast donuts fresh and to order.

One Million Acts Of Kindness, The Kindness Bicycle, The Kindness Bus, One Man, Bob, One Dog, Bogart, Spreading Kindness to Everyone; No Exceptions, Happy Valentine’s Day!!

dscn1276

I was out and about, walking, in Delray Beach, late in the day when a bus caught my attention.  I decided to check it out.  It was painted with writings all over.

In large letters http://www.onemillionactsofkindness.org was standing out.  No idea what it was. A few people were looking at it, as well.

dscn1277

I also noticed a bike. On it, just a plain sign saying “riding 9,000 miles for kids” and “overcome bullying through love”.

dscn1279

There was a slot on the bus to put donations.  So, I put something in.  Then, I started to take a picture and a voice said “thanks”.

Bob Votruba came out.  Chit chat ensued and I wanted to know more about him and his mission.  He has already surpassed the 9,000 miles on the bike.

Bob told me that it all started after the Virginia Tech’s massacre.  His mission is to save kids’ lives.  Personally, near his home, 3 students were killed at Chardon High School in Ohio on 2/27/12.  Three young adults he new from his hometown took their own lives.  He is honoring them and at the same time he is raising awareness of bullying and adolescent suicide.

dscn1278

Bob also has a sidekick…Bogart.  He is his traveling companion and a very social one too.  He is a Boston Terrier, who loves people and, actually, has his own story to tell.  He even has his own book, which you can purchase by visiting the above mentioned website.  Bogart was getting an ear treatment on that day, so I did not get to meet him.

Bob and Bogart have been riding around the perimeter of the United States, beginning and ending in New York City later this year.  Bob has 3 children.

The website is full of information, challenges and ways for all of us to extend our kindness to others.

I told him I had not seen him in my neck of the woods….Delaware Beaches!!  He said he had been in Delaware, though.

You can find One Million Acts of Kindness on Facebook and Twitter.  You can e-mail him at thekindnessbustour@gmail.com.  He is more than willing and able to speak at schools and other venues.

If you are, or know someone, who is considering suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.

I think his story was perfect for this Valentine’s Day….a good feel story.

And Bob gave me my Nikon moment and off he went….talk to you later.
