What’s Going On? Rehoboth Beach, Activities, Events, Entertainment, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware…Visit & Stay Awhile!!

I could tell that it was August because Staples was packed…this is their Christmas when everyone is ready to go back to school.  Rehoboth Beach is open year-round and even though the summer of 2013 might be coming to an end, this town is just getting started.  There is still time to think about all the festivals and the comings and goings of this coastal town….stay tuned for that.

In the meantime…..What’s Going On?

Friday, 8/9 – Clear Space Theatre Company is inviting you to join them on Friday, 8/9, for 2 FREE matinee performances at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.  WICKED will be presented by the talented students in their Musical Theatre Summer Intensive Program.  Location? 20 Baltimore Avenue in Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  Tel. 302-227-2270.  Website?

Until 2014 – If you love Rehoboth Beach, you should stop by and visit the Rehoboth Beach Museum.  It is an easy museum to navigate and you will still have plenty of time to hit the beach, shops, and restaurants.  You can learn how Rehoboth Beach was then and how it has developed during these years.  The present exhibit is “Beach Eats”.  Rehoboth Beach is a dining destination, as well, and the exhibit celebrates over 100 years of eating in Rehoboth Beach, from the grub to the fine dining.  For more information please visit

Saturday, 8/10, Sunday, 8/11, and Saturday, 8/17, and Sunday, 8/18 – The 40th Annual Outdoor Fine Art & Fine Crafts Show…Two week-ends!!  Location?  Rehoboth Art League, 12 Doods Lane in Henlopen Acres.  Saturday, 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.   Admission ? $5.00 Tel. 302-227-8404.  This show is a much awaited event every year in Rehoboth Beach.  And, this is a very special year as the Rehoboth Art League celebrates its 75th anniversary.  There will be plenty of activities, entertainment and food.  For more info., please visit

If you have been coming to the beach, you know that August is so busy….and parking can be a hair raising experience.  So, for the 40th Annual Outdoor Fine Art & Fine Crafts Show this is what you should do:

Since the parking in Henlopen Acres is very limited, the Art League is suggesting you use the Jolly Trolley.  Two convenient locations:  Park your car at either the Kmart on Rt. 1 or at the Rehoboth Beach ElementarySchool at 500 Stockley Avenue.  The shuttle will begin running at 9:45 a.m. and will be making continuous loops to the Outdoor Show.  I have used it and recommend it.

If you decide to venture and park in Henlopen Acres, please be considerate of the residents.  Adhere to parking restrictions, including no parking on the street. Unless there is a “No Parking” sign, all vehicles must park on the grass with tires off the pavement.  Yes, you heard me right and I write this too from experience.

For the 2 week-ends of the show, Henlopen Acres’ Dodd’s Lane, beginning at the instersection of Rolling Rd. and Tidewaters, from Dodd’s Lane to Zwaanendael, will be  temporarily one way street.  Visitors will be entering Henlopen Acres by making a left off of Columbia Avenue and exiting Henlopen Acres across from Rehoboth Beach’s Surf Avenue.

Saturday, 8/10 –  Opening Reception for artist Michael Krausz from 6 – 9 p.m.  A benefit for AIDS DE, 6 p.m. until 8:45 p.m.  It is the 5th Annual Silent Art Auction at Gallery 50, located at 50B Wilmington Avenue in Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  Tel. 302-227-2050.  Website?

The Red Shoes is a musical, only 10 minutes in long.  It was filmed entirely in Rehoboth Beach and surrounding areas with local talent.  Karen, a young orphan with a wild imagination, strikes creative gold in her new trial home, the “Foster Mother Mansion”.  Karen behaves well in this lifestyle of plenty, until she discovers a pair of red dancing shoes.  Unable to bottle her excitement for them, she must dance.  But, will Karen’s imagination carry her to trouble, or to paradise?  This short film praises obedience – to one’s own heart.

The Dream Share Project addresses the question; What does it take to make your dream come true?  Delaware documentarians, Chip Hiden and Alexis Irvin, traveled the country finding answers from those who have turned aspirations into reality.  You will hear from an Olympic skier, one of the original Latin Kings of Comedy, a slam poet, a Project Runway fashion designer, the CEO of a sustainable flip-flop company, a beer maker, the producer of Austin City Limits and many more.  Their wise and surprising comments cover everything from discovering one’s passion, committing to goals, dealings with setbacks and redefining success for the millennial generation.  Running time…63 minutes.

Having lived at the Delaware Beaches for so many years, visiting the local museums, where you can unlock the past so that you can see where we are going, is a must if you are visiting or living, here at the beach.  I know, I know, the beach, restaurants, and shops are probably what you are coming to the beach for…these museums will not take a long time.  You never know, you might be retiring to the Delaware Beaches; low property taxes and tax free shopping!!!

The Rehoboth Beach Historical Society’s mission is “to preserve and showcase artifacts that illustrate the development of our beautiful city by the sea”.

Until March 17h, the exhibit currently on display is “WWII:  Rehoboth Beach” – In Rehoboth there were Coast Guardsmen on horseback, a Civil Air Patrol airfield…the Civil Air Patrol pilots kept our waters safe from the enemy.  There were also blackouts and stage door canteens.  You can view at the Museum the artifacts that help tell the story of a beach town during the war.  A 1940’s kitchen, listen to the music of the Mills Brothers and the Tommy Dorsey Band.  Children visiting the Museum can learn how to send a Morse Code.  And you can grab a recipe for creamed chipped beef on toast!!

Thursday, February 14th – Valentine’s Day Stage Door Canteen, a Valentine’s Day Musical Revue.  The response has been overwhelming, so, instead of holding it at the Rehoboth Museum, it has been moved to Clear Space Theatre located at 20 Baltimore Avenue in downtown Rehoboth Beach,   It will start at 7:00 p.m.  Tickets are $14 (cash or check only for that night) in honor of the holiday and light refreshments will be served.  A cash bar will be available, as well.  Please call 302-227-7310 to reserve your seat.

This performance concurs with the WWII exhibit on display at the Rehoboth Museum.  Clear Space,, will take the audience on a sentimental journey to another era with a presentation of popular wartime songs; Chattanooga Choo-Choo, You’ll Never Know, and I’ll Be Seeing You.

Stage Canteens were special clubs and the guests were the steady stream of GIs headed off to war.  Many were leaving home for the first time and the Canteens offered a welcome opportunity to forget their anxieties, if only for a time, with entertainment, fellowship and a little American spirit.

Friday, March 8th – Documentary, “Top Secret Rosies”, in honor of Women’s History Month in March, at the Rehoboth Beach Museum located at 511 Rehoboth Avenue, by the roundabout.  The documentary will start at 7:00 p.m. in the museum’s Cooper Gallery.  Please note that reservations are required for this event, since the space is limited.  All you have to do is call 302-227-7310 and make the reservation.  Light refreshments will be served.  Free for members of the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society and $5 donation from non-members.

The film was produced and directed by Leann Erickson.  The film explores, with four of the “Top Secret Rosies” the importance of their role in the Allied successes.  The 4 vastly different women share what it was like as a human computer and how they sometimes worked night, day and night again.  It was up to these women to make sure those in the air and on the battle grounds received the accurate calculations needed to achieve success in hitting their targets.

Have a great day!!  Talk to you later.
