It is that time of the year when our beaches get a well deserved rest…..hahaha….I don’t think so. That happened so long ago, I do not even remember. If anything, every week there is something to do besides a walk on the Boardwalk, chilling out, reading, listening to live music…..so What’s Going On?

Wednesday, 10/5 and Thursday, 10/6 – THE BEATLES: EIGHT DAYS A WEEK. This is a new documentary by Ron Howard. Remember him? Happy Days! The touring years is based on the first part of The Beatles’ career (1962-1966). It is the period in which they toured and captured the world’s acclaim. Ron Howard’s film explores how John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr came together to become this extraordinary phenomenon “The Beatles”. Screening times are at 4 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the Cinema Art Theater starting 30 minutes before each screening. Admission is $8 for RBFS members and $10 for future members. This is the 6th annual Dewey Goes Pink event. Race registration opens on Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. The race will begin at 11:30 a.m. Proceeds will go to the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, now surpassing $225,000 in the first 5 years. “Through participation led support groups, educational workshops and mind/body classes, people affected by cancer learn vital skills that enable them to regain control, reduce isolation and restore hope regardless of the stage of the disease.” The Cancer Support Community is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that provides suport, education and hope to people with all kinds of cancer and to their loved ones, as well. ALL programs are offered at no cost to cancer patients, survivors, and their family members.
I have plenty of friends with different kinds of cancer. Come to think of it, I don’t think there is anyone that has not been touched by this physically and emotionally devastating disease. Unpredictable to say the least. My friends that have gone through the initial diagnosis, surgeries, treatments and finally remission say that it does change you. After going through something like that you don’t sweat the little trivial things of every day life.
 
The Cancer Support Community offers so many programs and the participants form friendships and connect with one another. The Cancer Support Community is busy fundraising this year. The following events are coming up and I think it would a great opportunity to participate in some of them. You are new in Southern Delaware? SATURDAY, MAY 14th – Sussex Survive & Thrive Walk 2016. Last year my team participated in this walk. We had a blast. Our team was called 16 Miles or Bust! Yes, the walk was 16 miles. This is a big fundraising event for Cancer Support Community Delaware. There are opportunities for sponsorships..from $300 to $7,500 for this particular walk!! More info? And, Yes that was the team!! It was for such a great cause and some of our team walkers were cancer survivors and others were walking for a loved one that had passed away. We started early in the a.m. and finished at the 16 Mile Brewery in Georgetown.
Now is 2016 and a new walk is almost around the corner. This year the walk is called Sussex Survive & Thrive Walk 2016 and it has been tweaked. Instead of the 16 miles there will be 10 miles. You may also do a 3 1/2 walk and a 1 Mile Survivors Walk. For all information regarding the walk, start a team, etc. etc. please visit http://www.cancersupportdelaware.org.
The walk will begin at Gordon’s Pond in Cape Henlopen State Park in Rehoboth. Check in will be at 7:00 a.m. and the walk will begin at 7:15 a.m. The 3 1/2 Mile Walk will check in at 8:45 a.m. and the walk will start at 9:15 a.m. The 1 Mile Survivors Walk will begin at Norfolk Street & the Rehoboth Boardwalk, with a check-in at 9:45 and the walk will begin at 10:15 a.m.
The Covertte Club will also be available to give rides to walkers that might want to take a break!!
The FINISH LINE will be at the Forgotten Mile Ale House, who is sponsoring the Walk, for an After-Walk Celebration from 10:30 until Noon with food, and drinks and….AWARDS!!
Free Shuttle Transportation will be available back to the Gordon’s Pond Parking Lot beginning at 11 a.m. on a first come, first served basis. Parking Passes for the Walk will be included in your Walk Packet, but please try to car pool if at all possible.
You may pick up Walk Packets at the Cancer Support Community at 18947 John J. Williams Hwy, Suite 312 in Rehoboth Beach. Wednesday and Thursday May 11th and May 12th from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. or on Friday, May 13th from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Packets will also be available on Saturday, May 14th at walk check-in.

It has been a week since our 16 Miles or BUST team participated in a 16 Mile Walk to raise money for the Cancer Support Community Delaware. We are all still talking about it because it was so much fun. Everyone survived the heat….I think there were more like 17 1/2 miles, going through the Circle in Georgetown.
Our team was comprised of 10 amazing women…and one guy, who is pretty awesome himself. These women and Jamin (our guy) have a thirst for life. They have had their ups and downs like everyone else. They have faced those curve balls that life throws to you when you least expect it, and they have handled them with courage. 3 of them were breast cancer survivors. They are fit, they laugh, and they can also let their hair down. They are professionals, mothers, grandmothers, well traveled and well read, as well. The following photo makes me laugh…with Jamin. He wore the pink hat that said “Women Who Behave Rarely Make History”!!
Before starting our walk, Jamin brought us all together in an uplifting prayer giving thanks, and praying for peace, hope and health for those afflicted with cancer.
Police escort…our route was a little dangerous, more so, at this time of the year. Every mile we had water, and every 2 miles we had fruit and granola bars.
We walked in groups of two or three, and then, we would change and formed other groups, which made it easier.
Everyone has been touched by cancer in one way or another and being that June is Cancer Survivors Month, cars passing by kept honking their horns all through our journey. It was so darn hot…but at least there was a breeze, and the Sussex County Corvette Club was transporting anyone that had had enough.
At the Lewes-Rehoboth Moose Lodge, the Sussex Tech Band received us. I believe that was mile 7.

I was waiting for my Venti Cafe Mocha Extra Hot, at Starbucks on Coastal Highway in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, when the poster caught my attention. I, usually, do take pictures of posters advertising events here or there. I looked at it for some time, while my daily addiction was being brewed. I posted it on my personal Facebook page….then, one of my friends mentioned about walking it. Another also mentioned the same and added that if we made a team she would join.
As I was walking out of the chiropractor’s office I decided that this would be a good challenge.
June is cancer survivors month. We all have so many people impacted by cancer. The courage of the ones fighting is so impressive. Lifechanging, really.

Survivors Across Sussex is a Premier 16 Mile Relay Event. You can decide what you want to do. Either form a team, walk in a relay, walk it yourself or even just donate money to support one of the teams. Hopefully, you will choose ours. This event is open to anyone and everyone who would like to Celebrate Cancer Survivors, Honor someone in the fight, or walk in memory of a loved one.

On Saturday our team will be early at the Tunnell Cancer Center on Rt. 24 or John J. Williams Highway. The walk begins at 7:30 a.m. but before that, at 7:00 a.m. there will be an Opening Ceremony.
You can walk the whole 16 miles, or just one mile…….remember that 16 Mile Brewery will be waiting for all walkers and visitors for their Cancer Suvivors Rock? Block Party. Live music, food trucks, vendors, and a special and unique beer brewed by 16 Mile!!
The Corvette Club will be in charge of transporting walkers through the 16 miles. Tired at one? Then, meet the rest at the 16 Mile Brewery.

16 Mile Brewery is located at 412 South Bedford St. in Georgetown, Delaware. The party begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. The Cancer Survivors Rock! Block Party will feature live music, food trucks, vendors, and BEER!! There will be Beachcombers Corvette Show, $1 Basketball Shoot Game, $5 Ribbons Pick-em Game, and a Cornhole Tournament that will be taking place at Noon. Shoot….I will be missing that one. I won’t be there until about 1:30 p.m…..walking!

The best part of the Second Season is that it is a little quieter…..except this week-end when bikers riding towards Ocean City, Maryland were endless…it is Bike Week in O.C. Here in Rehoboth Beach we are having a busy Saturday.

PLAYTIME AT THE BEACH – DOGFRIENDLY HAPPY HOUR – THE PURPLE PARROT GRILL, Bier Garten from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m Location? 134 Rehoboth Avenue. Meet and ming with other animal lovers who support Delaware Humane Association. Local restaurants and bars in Rehoboth host a series of “doggy happy hours” from May through October each year. Dogs are welcome at each venue but must be on a leash. A portion of the proceeds from each happy hour will be donated to the Delaware Humane Association. 4th ANNUAL WINGS OF HOPE KICK-OFF
Today, Wednesday, the 13th of August is the official kick off date for the 4th Annual Wings of Hope…the Campaing of Hope. This prelude to the much anticipated Butterfly Release that will be taking place on Saturday, September 13th.
Businesses and organizations throughout Sussex County will be selling seeded paper buterflies to honor friends and loved ones impacted by cancer.
Epworth United Methodist Church, Grace United Methodist Church, All Saints’ Church, Dimitra Yoga, Rehoboth Beach Public Library, Tomato Sunshine and Surf Bagel are just a few of the locations selling butterflies.
Beauties and Butterflies — Salons Suporting Cancer Support Community Delaware chaired by Drexel Davison of Bad Hair Day? includes over a dozen beauty salons participating in the Wings of Hope by selling butterflies. Thousands of paper butterflies will be displayed at the Wings of Hope – A Butterfly Release on 9/13 on the grounds of the Medical Arts Building at the Beebe Health Campus on Rt. 24 in Rehoboth Beach.
This very special celebration of life is highlighted with the release of 250 live Monarch butterflies in recognition of Sussex County friends and neighbors impacted by cancer. Hours are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the admission is free. The event will also feature vendors, demos, refreshments, and children’s activities.

Rehoboth Beach is a great town to walk, jog and just sit on one of the many benches outlining the award-winning Boardwalk. During the summer months this Boardwalk is packed, but on The Second Season, it is a great place to relax and take in that salty ocean air.
Funland is close for the season, but Playland is open!!
Part of the fun whille on the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk is the “boardwalk grub”. Those foods that scream “ice cream”. These ladies were having so much fun and happy to pose, as welll.
At the water’s edge the fun continued.
And on the beach, some were walking their dogs (you can do that now) or beachcombing.
From the north side of the Boardwalk the WWII Towers were clearly seen.
Plenty of weddings take place on the beach….and yesterday, as the day started to wind down….the guests were patiently waiting.
I had to get back to my car….have a good one!!

Impacted by cancer…too many friends and family members afflicted. The Cancer Support Community Delaware’s mission is to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community.
They are the only organization in Delaware dedicated exclusively to helping people cope with and manage the emotional aspect of cancer.
All of their programs are free of charge. And, all funds raised in Sussex County stay in Sussex County.
The 3rd Annual Wings of Hope…A Butterfly Release to benefit Cancer Support Community Delaware will be Saturday, 9/14/13. Rain date will be Sunday, 9/15. Location? The Medical Arts Building, 18947 John J. Williams Highway in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Time? 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.
It will be a fun event and FREE!! Everyone is welcome. There will be activities, entertainment, vendors, and refreshments.
Seeded butterfly cutouts ($10) will be available for purchase, as well as the opportunity to release your own live butterfly ($30 in advance, $40 at the event).
The highlight of this fundraising event will be the butterfly garden created by Sposato Landscape and the release of 250 live Monarch butterflies.

You are encourage to purchase $10 seeded butterfly cutouts to honor those who have been touched by cancer. These will be displayed at the Wings of Hope Butterfly Release.
