I don’t remember how many times I have visited this small and intimate Asian restaurant located in Boyton Beach, Florida. Sushi Simon was recommended to us by someone that was at another dining table and heard us talking about sushi, a couple of years ago.
The address is 1614 South Federal Highway, Boyton Beach, FL 33435. Tel. 561-731-1819. It is in a shopping center on the corner of Woolbright and South Federal Highway.
Sushi Simon definitely has a following. The restaurant can get crowded. Back in December I went with my son and sat at the bar. We had a great dinner. We talked to Simon and he told us he had worked at Sushi Jo, also in Palm Beach County. On Monday, Simon was at his usual spot, behind the bar fixing sushi and other delicacies. His rolls contain plantains, strawberries, macademia nuts. His Crazy Lucy soup is not just a Miso soup but the inclusion of different types of fish; another twist from the usual.
Just a few diners at that time of the evening. I must admit that since my husband has to eat gluten free, at times is a little hard to find a gluten free interesting roll. That was the case on Monday. The rolls he wanted, he could not eat. He finally settled on one and to tell you the truth I don’t even remember what it was. He said it was good, but with not enough enthusiasm.
He also had 2 orders of Escolar, sashimi style. Escolar is a snake mackerel and is found in deep tropical and temperate waters around the world. Some restaurants call it white tuna.
I, on the other hand, started with Conch, sashimi style. We also ordered fresh wasabi. It is so good and a big difference from the wasabi they usually serve you. Conch is usually a little tough but I did not mind it. I, actually, expected it. It was a little boring so I probably would not order it again.
I wish I could remember the rolls I had. They were so good. Part of the evening’s special. Usually I can write the description from the menu but only the names were written and I can’t even remember those. They were funny names.

If you do not like sushi or sashimi and think you can get something else at Sushi Simon, then, think again because this restaurant does cater to sushi and sashimi aficionados.
If you have to eat gluten free then be flexible and bring your own gluten free soy sauce.
I almost forgot to tell you that the service has been constant; friendly and willing to help with the menu.
Sushi Simon has reviews that go from excellent, to terrible, rolls are too small, or best ever, and the usual too pricey. It’s personal thing, so check it out and decide for yourselves.
Short and to the point. Next time I will make sure I get those descriptions before I get too comfortable.

I find it so funny….when I write posts about what’s going on in the beaches that I frequent, I have to laugh because there is so much. I usually, pick and choose the activities, events and entertainment that catch my attention. So, if you are visiting Palm Beach County, the town of Delray Beach and surrounding towns then maybe these ones will appeal to you, as well.
Activities
Tuesday/Thursday Paddlers – This activity is for experience kayakers or paddlers. If you love to kayak then this might be up your alley. The duration of the paddles is 3 hours twice a week. They have now added Saturdays, as well. What you need to do is send an e-mail to seeleydavid@bellsouth.net and put in the subject line “Paddling Group”. Then send your phone number. He will notify you by e-mail of the paddle location. This is a group that has been getting together for years. After the 3 hour paddle they will meet for lunch at a restaurant.

Boca Raton Tours – Join a naturalist from Gumbo Limbo Nature Center for a guided tour along the Boardwalk at Rutherford Park. Then, the tour will be followed by a canoe paddle through mangrove trails and back along the shoreline of the Intracoastal. Please note that paddling experience is necessary. $22/person or $15 for members of the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center. Prepayment and reservations are necessary by calling 561-338-1542. Loxahatchee Canoeing offers guided moonlight tours from 7 – 9 p.m. through Arthur R. Saturday, 2/4 and Sunday 2/5 – The Delray Beach Antiques Show at the Delray Beach Community Center on 50 NW 1st Ave. Exhibitor booths of antique elegance, quality and beauty. Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Live Entertainment
Delray Beach is full of music. Different venues seem to be able to accommodate everyone’s likings. Check these ones.
Crane’s Beach House – You don’t have to be a guest to enjoy some of the live entertainment on week-ends. Crane’s Beach House is located at 82 Gleason St. Tel. 561-278-1700. Website? www.cranesbeachhouse.com.
On Friday the Tiki Bar will be opening at 5 p.m. – Live entertainment will start at 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. with DYMiN. She has performed alongside the late Bob Hope, the late Miles Davis among many others.
On Saturday go by the North Pool Waterfall where Adam Barnes “Teacha” will be performing live reggae starting at 6 p.m.
The Atlantic Grille is located at the Seagate Hotel in Delray Beach – Friday and Saturday from 8:30 p.m. until 12:30 p.m. you will find Orson Whitfield. The Seagate Hotel is located at E. Atlantic Avenue. Website? www.theatlanticgrille.com.
And if all that fails…..there is always plenty of eating in Delray. Casual or elegant? Your choice.

I got some information regarding the celebration of Earth Month by the City of Delray Beach. Delray is inviting the community to participate in “green-themed” activities and events throughout the month of April.
Earth Day on the Avenue will be hosted by the City of Delray Beach. It will take place on Saturday, April 9th. There will be so many things for kids to do throughout the day. All ages will have fun. Guess what? An all day free, family friendly event. And, here is a little teaser.
Saturday, 4/9 – The Great American Beach Cleanup. Sponsored by the Sandoway House Nature Center. 7:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m., at the City’s Municipal Beach.
Delray’s beach is one of its primary assets. It is a wide and unobstructed beach. The water is warm and clear.
Volunteers are requested to participate in the nation’s largest community improvement program to collect trash and debris in an effort to promote a cleaner and safer City beach. Supplies will be provided and community service hours will be awarded.

Saturday, 4/9 – Petting Zoo at the Delray Green Market from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Families will be able to visit with farm animals and learn about their roles in the environment. The Delray Green Market is one of my favorites when visiting Delray. Baked goods, flowers, music; just strolling early in the morning is very relaxing. If you decide to go, pick up their cookbook. It has very good, easy recipes by locals.
Saturday, 4/9 – Earth Day on The Avenue will continue at Old School Square Park, located on Atlantic Ave. It is east of the Old School Square Cultural Arts Center. It will begin at 9:00 a.m.
It will be a kid friendly event and will include Planting with the Mayor, Environmental Storytelling & Music, Buttons the Clown Goes Green, Marine & Land Animal Encounter & Awareness. Boyton Beach, Florida
The town of Boyton Beach is located north of Delray; just a few miles. I just got an e-mail from Art-Sea Living Gallery and Studio. This shop is located at 1628 South Federal Hwy. Tel. 561-733-2600. Website? www.art-sealiving.com. The store opened in 2003 and for the past few years they have been at this new location. I have not been at this location but I understand that it is so much bigger and she has expanded all her programs.
Today, Friday, 4/8 and Saturday 4/9 it will be her last Trunk Show of the season. On Friday it will be from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. There will be a Meet & Greet with wine and yummy treats. On Saturday, it will be an all day show, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. In the morning you can enjoy coffee and donuts and in the p.m., wine and treats.
The store will have artistic handmade creations. Artists will have show specials. You wil also find handpainted gourds and painted emu eggs. You can enter a raffle, as well.

This post is for the people visiting Delray Beach and Palm Beach County. As I have mentioned more than enough times, Delray Beach is the perfect town for visitors. If you are lucky enough to be a resident, then you already know this. This Village by the Sea offers the perfect vacation spot because it has it all.
I love walking the town but for this post I needed a car. I have written about the wetlands before. But, it is good to mention them again, since this website is written in a blog style; you might forget or saw the pictures but never read the content of the post. I do have a few friends that do that, believe me.
Someone mentioned to me that I needed to visit the Wakodahatchee Wetlands. They said the birds are beautiful and throughout the year you can watch birds in their nests and new life showing its face.
There are 2 wetlands, not far from each other. One is called Wakodahatchee in suburban Delray and the other is called Green Cay Nature Preserve in suburban Boynton Beach.
Wakodahatchee Wetlands
Wakodahatchee means “created waters” and this is exactly what this is. Fifty acres have been transformed into a wetlands ecosystem. And since its transformation turtles, frogs, alligators and many species of birds call this nature preserve home.
It is located at 13026 Jog Rd. It is a little tricky but not that hard. You need to go west on Atlantic Ave., crossing over 95. Continue until Jog Rd and turn right. Go through the intersection of Lake Ida and about 1/4 mile on the right you will see it. The sign is not very big, though.
This is the southeast side of Palm Beach County Water Utility Department’s Southern Region Operation Center. Tel. 561-493-6000. Website? http://www.pbcgov.com/waterutilities/wakodahatchee/location.htm.
It opens from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. It is the perfect place to relax, walk and enjoy nature. It is free. The 3/4 mile elevated boardwalk takes you through twists and turns, all the time enjoying the view. It is quiet and there are areas to rest. You will see photographers, walkers and someone just sitting and relaxing, taking in the scenery. I like it in the early evening; the birds are coming for the night.
“Every day, PBC Water Utilites Dept. Southern Region Water Reclamation Facility pours approximately 2 million gallons of highly treated water into Wakodahatchee’s wetlands. By acting as a natural filter for the nutrients that remain, the wetlands work to further clean the water.”
Green Cay Nature Preserve
Same type of setting as Wakodahatchee; but bigger. Ninety acres of nature preservation. Green Cay is located at 12800 Hagen Ranch Rd. It is suburban Boynton Beach between Boynton Beach Blv. and Atlantic Ave.
This elevated wetland boardwalk is 1.5 miles long. It winds through the wetlands and it really is the perfect place to take in a walk either early in the morning or late in the afternoon. It is open every day from sunrise to sunset. The actual Nature Center is open Tuesdays through Fridays from 1 until 4:30 p.m., Saturdays from 8:15 until 4:30 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 until 4:30 p.m.

I don’t know what comes to my mind first, the craving for a particular food that takes me to that restaurant to review it, or that I pick a restaurant because it is time to review a restaurant.
I think it is the former. I don’t give it too much thought. It is like wanting pizza, or a good juicy hamburger, Indian food, Thai, or, Oh, I feel like having a crepe. For example, yesterday I was driving and stopped at Eming’s Chicken, which is closer to Bethany Beach, Delaware, but away from the beaches. Well, I will probably be there Friday because they are having a pig roast starting at 11:00 a.m. I got that craving. If I do go, believe me, that will be a post in the making.
I thought about this particular post a few times. Already you know that I like sushi, and sashimi. I feel good after I eat it; satisfied but not overly full.
I was having dinner in Delray Beach back in December with Anita and my husband. We were at Lemongrass, which I have written about a few times, and one of my favorite restaurants in Delray. Talking and chatting away, interjecting in Spanish with Anita; back to English. The tables were close to each other so you could really see what other patrons were eating and some times even hear what they were talking about.
Our entrees arrived and out came my camera. A couple next to us, started a friendly chat. Of course, I told them what I was doing. They, actually, ordered my fish, since they saw how gorgeous it looked. Then, the gentleman proceeded to tell me that I needed to try a sushi restaurant in Boyton Beach called Sushi Simon. That it had very innovative combinations in their sushi. That’s all I needed to hear so, yes, we went there the next day and one other time after that. Here is my personal opinion and review.
Sushi Simon is located at 1614 S. Federal Highway, Boyton Beach, Florida 33435. The actual location is at the SE corner of Woolbright Rd. and Federal Hwy., right on that shopping center. Tel. 561-731-1819. No website but you can find them on Facebook. Their business hours are Mondays – Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. and Sundays from 12:00 – 10:00 p.m. They also have lunch specials Mondays through Fridays. Carry out is available, as well.
Boyton Beach is located just north of Delray Beach and South of Palm Beach. Not far; easy to get to.
When I first entered the restaurant I thought I smelled fish, which usually turns me off, but that dissipated and did not happen again. The restaurant was small, and not very wide; plenty of tables and a sushi bar, though. A couple of tables outdoors too. It was cozy and people were friendly.
Looking through the menu I thought it looked good, even though I do not like imitation crab. It seemed that it was used a lot in their rolls. Also, cream cheese was used a lot.
The rolls I decided to try were:
Little Havana which had eel, avocado, cream cheese, plantains, and mango. I will tell you that it was delicious and perfect for a South Florida roll. The plantain and mango combination was great. Loved it. That was what the gentleman told me at Lemongrass. Innovative combinations.
 Little Havana and Ichigo Roll Ichigo Roll was delicious, as well. It had also eel, masago, avocado, cream cheese, strawberries, and macadamia nuts on top. I had not had a roll with macadamia nuts. It was a first and really liked that crunchiness and fruit together with the eel.
My husband had the Kawaii Maui Roll with coconut shrimp, avocado, cream cheese, pineapple, papaya, with mixed macadamia nuts on top. He thought it was the best roll he had had in a very long time. Could not stop talking about it. We had taken our own gluten free soy sauce. The restaurant had not had anyone ask for something like that in the past.
 Kawaii Maui Roll Next visit came about because my husband could not stop talking about the Kawaii Maui Roll. Tommy and Michael came with us and it got a little tricky because Sushi Simon, practically, does not have too much for the person that does not like sushi, or seafood, for that matter. The only thing he could have was Gyoza which were steamed or deep fried pork and vegetable dumplings.
 Gyoza But, wait, he decided to try the roll my husband was raving about. I could see it in his face, it was a no go, as he was trying to eat it. The other ones finished that roll for him. Happy, yes, they were.
We ordered pretty much the same thing. I added the Crazy Lucy soup, which was a special soup of the day. I really liked it. It was a Miso soup but with different fish added to it. Tasty.
 Crazy Lucy I again, ordered that Little Havana roll and then tried another roll that was on their special that evening. I cannot remember its name but it did have the avocado on top. It was good, but not memorable like Little Havana and Ichigo Roll.
The concensus was that it was good, but for the size of the rolls, it was expensive. I would go again for that Little Havana Roll and the Ichigo Roll. My husband will go again for the Kawaii Maui Roll. I thought his roll was small; a few more pieces were needed.

Friday, 7/23 – Gallery Walk on Atlantic and NE 2nd Ave. from 7 until 10 p.m. Artists open their galleries for an extended period of time. Refreshments and music.
Saturday, 7/24 – Narrated Tour of Historic Delray Beach. Location: Delray Beach Public Library, 100 W. Atlantic Ave. The tour takes 1 hour and 45 minutes. It starts at 11:00 a.m. Tour 10 historic sites sponsored by the Museum of Lifestyle & Fashion Hisory. $15 for adults and senior citizens and free for under 18 years of age.

Just 3 small posts that might be of interest.
The Doorman of South Florida – All of a sudden I could not open one of my garage doors. Immediately I called Michael, who is my Property Manager (he advertises on my blog, check it out) and he suggested this family operated company. Jim Falzone came and immediately fixed it. No need to replace any major parts. They are bonded and insured. Their specialties are garage, entry and French doors; residential and commercial. Thought you might want to know and even visit their showroom.
Sushi Machi – This restaurant is north of Delray, in Boyton Beach. Oh, not another Sushi restaurant!! Well, it is another one but it was good. The location is not attractive; the shopping center is just a little run down. The restaurant is very down to earth so don’t get dressed up. Just come as you are. This restaurant was suggested to me by Donna. She and her husband, Dick, go all the time. The sushi was delicious but if that is not what you want, they have plenty of other dishes on the menu. One person in my group got the chicken livers sauteed in ginger sauce. And, by the way, they were aware of people with a gluten allergy, they just did not have the wheat free soy sauce, but we did and they used it. I had a new roll called the Salmon Mango Roll. It had salmon, avocado inside out with salmon and mango. The mango really made this roll; the combination of its sweetness with the salmon and avocado, was just perfect. My other roll was the Birthday Roll, which had barbecued eel, shrimp tempura and cream cheese inside out with sesame seeds. Very good, as well. Another person had “Hibachi” from the Grill; the NY Steak. It really was perfectly cooked; medium rear. Sushi Machi is located on 9832 S. Military Trail, Ste. G-2, Boyton Beach, FL 33436. Is on the northeast corner of Military Trail and Boyton Beach Blvd. between Winn-Dixie and CVS. The tel. is 561-369-8823. They have take-out, delivery to a limited area, and party trays available. Their boats are gorgeously prepared. Tate was our waiter and he is there every evening. We really did liked it, but it is a very simple restaurant.
 Salmon Mango Roll 
The Snappy Turtle – If you are a woman, and you like shopping and have been in Delray Beach, then you probably already know this store. It was established 28 years ago by Carole Harvey. It is known for the pink and green colors; a very preppy store. This store carries a wide variety of Jack Rogers Sandals year round and some of the color combinations are exclusive to Snappy Turtle. Lots of t-shirts, shirts, skirts, sweaters, bags and jewelry are always displayed very attractively. In the back of the store you will find their Home and Gifts section. Plenty of times I have bought hostess gifts at Snappy Turtle. Their website is very complete and you can really view their shop and see a good amout of the very pretty things that are available, plus their shipping information. Cold in South Florida and you find yourself on vacation and mentally and physically you are not prepared for the frigid temperatures. You see those swaying palm trees that I love so much and you wonder how can it be? I am supposed to be sitting on the beach. You even had to go and buy a sweatshirt or two.
A few things that you might enjoy this week are:
Saturday, January 9th – The Green Market – 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. – The location is SE 4th Ave. from the first alleyway south of Atlantic Ave. to SE 1st Street. This market happens every Saturday and there is an abundance of fresh and local produce, bake goods, and plenty of others things to check out.
Saturday, January 9th – Ride and Remember Trolly Tour – It is sponsored by the Delray Beach Historical Society and the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum. It is a 90 minute tour that will focuse on the Historic Districts. Saturday, January 9th – Art-Sea Living Gallelry & Studio, 1628 South Federal Highway, Boyton Beach, FL 33435 will be having an Arts & Crafts Trunk Show. This is an event that happens the second week-end of every month until May. Local artists will be on hand to show and sell their creations. There will be good wine, good conversation and great art. Monday, January 11th and Tuesday, January 12th – Will and Anthony Nunziata will be at the Crest Theatre, Old School Square, 51 N. Swinton Ave. The show will begin at 8 p.m. Will and Anthony are identical twins that have taken the music and cabaret world by storm. They have appeared with the Boston Pops, the Cleveland Pops and the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. They will soon be appearing in a segment of the Rachael Ray Show. Tickets are $42 per person.
