I don’t know what’s the sequence, regarding the heading of this post. Probably depends with Alice’s mood and the time of the year.
Alice H. Klein is the artist and designer behind TKO, along with her husband, Bryant and now her niece, JoAnne.

TKO is located at 100 Garfield Pkwy., #6 in the town of Bethany Beach, Delaware. Tel. 302-539-6992. Website? www.alicehklein-tko.com.
I have written about this store on 9/3/09 and on 10/25/10. You can check those posts by clicking on the months of September and October and scrolling down to the dates.
You can always find something at TKO. Her designs are beautiful and target a wide range of prices. It could be something for a friend or something more dramatic for yourself.

Alice can design anything you want or she can also update a special piece.
I was at the point in Cape Henlopen State Park last week. I always take visitors to that side of the park. You can see the town of Lewes and the Ferry on one side and on a clear day you can see New Jersey on the other.
It was windy and so many kiteboarders. I heard my name being called. It was Alice. She and all these other kiteboarders were having a blast. Actually, she might have been the only woman too. You see she has her passions; designing unique, never boring, pieces of jewelry or doing the extreme; kiteboarding.

This week I went to her store in Bethany. She opens Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
She has so many new pieces. Ones that I fell in love with were the earrings made out of shells she picked up in Puerto Rico. Here they are.

The rest is just a little peak into her designs. The pictures don’t do justice; you need to visit and have her explain to you the types of pearls, the stones, the metals, etc. etc.

Have a great day!!!…talk to you later…after I digest the subs from Casapullas; my next post….

Bethany’s flowers were gorgeous. As I walked around town today, they were still looking so good even though we have had some extreme weather lately. I have to congratulate the person in charge for all her work. I know she is there pretty much every day early in the a.m.

It was quiet in town, the playground was empty and there were just a few people shopping. That will soon end tonight since tomorrow Bethany is hosting its Annual Bethany Beach Boardwalk Arts Festival. It is on the Boardwalk and branching out to some of the adjacent streets in town. The show is from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. A juried art show, including live music and a silent auction. It is sponsored by the Bethany-Fenwick Area Chamber of Commerce. It is free. More info? Please call 302-539-2100 or visit www.bethany-fenwick.org.
I was with my friend, Debbie, and since we got hungry we decided to go to DiFebo’s located at 789 Garfield Parkway (Rt. 26) in Bethany. For reservations you may call 302-539-4550 and for carry-out, please call 302-539-4914. Their website is www.difebos.com and you can also find them on Facebook as DiFebos Restaurants. DiFebo’s is open year-round.
It was, practically, one year ago since I stopped to have lunch there. It was way past the lunch hour, but there were still customers having a late lunch.
Our waiter, which by the way was very attentive, experienced and friendly, brought us some hummus and flat bread. This is a traditional hummus, but I could detect a hint of lemon. Very smooth. The flat bread was delicious.

For my lunch I orderd a House Roasted Beet Salad. It had fresh beets, arugula, walnuts and apples. When I see beets on a menu I do order them. I love them and these ones were very good. A perfect starter.

Then, I also ordered the soup of the day. They had just finished making a tomato soup. It was lighter than a bisque; perfect on a cloudy day. A little Parmesan cheese finished the presentation.

Debbie ordered the Arugula & Blue Cheese Salad. It had a balsamic vinaigrette, pears, and walnuts. She decided to top the salad with a salmon.

Debbie and I were happy with our lunch. A little coffee, more chatting and then it was time to go.
Have a good one!! Talk to you later…

Bethany Beach by Jack Lewis '93
The town of Bethany is a small family resort town right on the beach. It is what you would want to expect of a seaside resort. The center of the town is its Boardwalk and Bandstand. Shops, restaurants, basketball courts and playground are just a block a way from each other. It is the perfect town for walking, jogging or strolling. And, let’s not forget that beautiful beach that stretches for miles. Each street in Bethany seems to lead its visitors right to the water’s edge.

Prior to the early 50’s, it took some time to get to Bethany Beach. There was no railroad connection. You really must have wanted to visit Bethany because you had to travel first to Baltimore, Maryland. Spend the night in Charm City and then travel by boat across the Chesapeake Bay to the Delmarva Peninsula. Then, take the train across the peninsula to Rehoboth Beach. Until 1910, the visitors would have to take the steamer, Atlantic, across Rehoboth Bay to Ocean View and travel by horsedrawn carriage to Bethany. After 1910 the Loop Canal was completed allowing the motorboat to dock directly in Bethany.

If you are visiting Bethany during this Holiday Week-End, this is what you will find.

Sunday, 9/4 – Jesse Garron’s Tribute to Elvis at 8:00 p.m. The entertainment will be at the Bandstand.
Monday, 9/5 – Yoga at the Bethany Beach Bandstand. This is the last day for yoga right on the Bandstand but Yoga at the Beach has a year round schedule. If you would like to check it out please vivist www.bethanybeachyoga.org. On Labor Day be there from 6 a.m. until 7 a.m. and if possible, bring your own mat since they are limited. Drop in fee is $5.
Monday, 9/5 – Tai Chi, which is also called Meditation in Motion is at the Bethany Beach Boardwalk. From 7:30 a.m. until 8:30 a.m. Drop in fee is $5. More info? Please call 302-363-4500.
Monday, 9/5 – Labor Day Jazz Funeral at 5:30 p.m. Saying “so long” but not forgotten to another summer at the beach. Be prepared to wail and carry on. Then, the lifeguards will do their celebratory swim at around 6 or so. This swim used to be quite different years ago. Some of those in Bethany remember it so well…

Saturday, 9/10 – The 33rd Annual Bethany Beach Boardwalk Arts Festival. One day only when more than 100 artists will showcase their best along the Boardwalk and 2 adjoining streets. 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Look for the silent auction at the Bandstand from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. All proceeds from the silent auction will benefit the art programs at 4 local elementary schools.

The Bethany Beach Cam is still running. To view what’s going on on the Boardwalk, please visit http://www.bethanycam.com.
Note: Bethany Beach Trolleys run through mid September. It is the best way to get around in Bethany and avoid those meters. Please check www.townofbethanybeach.com for the schedule.

Have fun!! Talk to you later….

Are you thinking….there she comes again!! Oh, well. You know what happens? When it hits you or your family, then you spring into action, just like anything else.
I got an e-mail from Sharon who every year visits the Delaware Beaches. The difference this year is that she has been diagnosed with celiac disease. No gluten (wheat flour or its derivatives); so….how about Grotto Pizza, a favorite of hers? She read my post on Grotto’s new addition to their menu. You got it, Gluten Free Pizza!!

I don’t know Sharon but I know that brought a smile to her face. She wanted to know more. I sent her a not so short e-mail with additional information on our restaurants that are sensitive to the customers with food allergies and intolerances.
I know how hard it is to go to a restaurant and at the mention of the word “gluten free”, the glaze clouds the eyes of a waiter. It just happened to me this week. It is not her or his fault. On this day and age, as celiac disease is at the forefront of food allergies, restaurants need to inform their staff about this and other food allergies and intolerances because there is a difference, and it is important.
“A true food allergy causes an immune system reaction that affects numerous organs in the body.” It can be severe or life-threatening. An intolerance or sensitivity is less serious. It is limited to digestive problems.
It is evident that eating out is getting easier when you have a food allergy. I have seen the improvement.
The response of some restaurants varies. Not on purpose. There is a lot of ignorance and there is also the chef that has a concept of his dish in a specific way. To change it would completely ruin his masterpiece.
Two restaurants that are rising above the rest, here at the Delaware Beaches, are Big Fish Grill and Bethany Blues. These two restaurants, by far, are the best I have encountered, anywhere, regarding their handling of customers with food allergies. Kudos to them!!
Big Fish Grill
I am a habitual customer of this popular restaurant in Rehoboth Beach. There is always a line but I have a tip for you. If you go through the entrance of the Tiki Bar, you can grab a high top or sit at the bar without the assistant of a hostess. The service is just as good there. I, actually, prefer it.
I questioned if the crabcakes had any fillers. She said “just a little bit for binding”. Oh, it is just that my husband has a gluten allergy. I left it like that. I turned around and the Manager was there wondering who had the gluten allergy. Only the Manager at Big Fish will come and talk to you about an allergy.
After the food is prepared, she will inspect the dish; then the food will be brought to the table by him or her.
Big Fish is located at 20298 Coastal Highway, Rehoboth Beach. Tel. 302-227-FISH. Website? www.bigfishgrill.com.
When visiting the website you can click on Menu. On the right hand side you will see all the menus available for each allergy. Dairy Free, Egg Free, Garlic Free, Gluten Free, Nut Free, Shellfish Free.
On that evening, just sitting at the bar, my husband enjoyed, worryfree, a Thai Wrap and some gorgeous shrimp.

I usually order their House Salad, which has wild greens with tomato, gorgonzola, walnuts and maple walnut vinaigrette. Then, I have them top it with their caramelized Atlantic Salmon. It is delicious. I can’t get enough of it.

Bethany Blues
This restaurant and music venue takes its customers with food related allergies very seriously, as well.

Bethany Blues is located at 18385 Coastal Highway, Lewes, and in Bethany Beach you can find them at 6 North Pennsylvania Avenue. In their website, www.bethanyblues.com you can click under Menu, then click under Allergy Concerns. You will get plenty of info. there.
Again, at Bethany Blues, the Manager will come and talk to you about your food related allergy.

Bethany Blues, I am coming back; just waiting for the Second Season at the Beaches, which is fast approaching.
Even though there plenty of other restaurants that can accommodate you at the Delaware Beaches, these 2 really do stand out.
Let me know what you think…talk to you later…
August 7th, 2011

During the summer everything seems more vibrant, hopeful and liberating. In a good mood and out the door on such a beautiful day until I hit Route 1, here in Rehoboth Beach. Bumper to bumper traffic; they were trying to get to their places. My thoughts went in different directions.
Anyway, Bethany Beach is known as a quiet resort. Well, it used to be quiet when I lived there; not so much anymore. It is a lively coastal town, here at the Delaware Beaches.

If you happen to be visiting this week, then some of these activities might be of interest to you or to someone in your group.
Take it if you can. The meters are expensive!!
The center of the town is the Bandstand and a lot of the following activities are going to be held there. Remember that it is an outdoor venue. Check the weather and if in doubt call the hot line at 302-539-5484. All shows at the Bandstand start at 7:30 unless otherwise noted.

There are free meters on Sundays from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. For more info., please visit http://www.bethanybeachfarmersmarket.com.

Thursday, 8/11 – Deadline for the Talent Show Application. The Talent Show is August 21st at 7:00 p.m. but the deadline is this coming Thursday. You need to provide a CD with your music on it. Please remember to label your CD and mail it with the application to Bethany Beach Town Hall, P.O. Box 109, 214 Garfield Pkwy., Bethany Beach, DE 19920, Attention: Gloria Farrar

Friday, 8/12 – At the Bandstand is Cajun Zydeco-a-Go-Go. “Zydeco is a syncopated dance music played by Creole French speaking people of African descent, who historically lived on the prairies of Southwest Louisiana. At its core, it is the sound of an accordion paired with the scrapping of a rubboard.”
Pete Gumbo is the Band Leader. The music is considered classic New Orleans Rhythm & Blues. The band was founded in 1992. If you want to know more, please visit www.zydecoagogo.com.
Clarksville, Delaware
The town of Clarksville is about 4 miles west of Bethany Beach, on route 26.

Good Earth Market and Organic Farm is located at 31806 Good Earth Lane, right on that route 26. Not far at all. The website is http://www.goodearthmarket.com.

I first visited this market and farm this year and wrote about it at different times. You can put on the search on this website its name and you will be then directed to the different posts.
Good Earth Market and Organic Farms has its own Farmers’ Market which is held every Friday through Labor Day in their parking lot from 2 – 6 p.m. You will find local seasonal produce, Kogler’s Bread, jams and jellies, pies and plenty more, believe me.

Want a salad or a sandwich? All you have to do is call in your order at 302-537-7100, daily from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. and then stop by and pick it up.
Save the date for the following events:
Saturday, 8/27 at 12 Noon – Matt Haley is back! It is a cooking demonstration.
Tuesdays, 9/14 at 6 p.m. – Farm to Table feast to benefit Global Delaware-HHC. This is a unique experience. I went to one in June and it was truly delicious with a beautiful setting right on the farm. It is $95 per person. It is a fundraising event. You can call 302-537-7100 for a reservation. Rain date will be the following day. These events usually sell out, so remember you don’t want to snooze and lose.
