Destination? Bethany Beach, Delaware, The Quiet Resort, Independence Day Celebration, Saturday, July 4th, Let Freedom Ring, Fireworks, Parades, Entertainment, Southern Delaware, Delaware Beaches

img_5176dscn5839

I like putting on the heading that Bethany Beach is The Quiet Resort.  Maybe it was known to be that quiet many years ago, but no more!!  This is a sought after coastal town in Southern Delaware….perfect for summer vacations, and to get away during the fall and winter.

dscn5774

Bethany was founded by members of the Christian Church; the Disciples of Christ.  They came from Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania.  It was not supposed to be a town.  They wanted it to be a permanent yearly seaside assembly for the Christian churches of the country.

dscn5777

But quite a little town it is.  Families have been coming for so many years, creating many summertime memories.

The Fourth of July is celebrated big time in Bethany Beach.  This is the 32nd year.  There is usually a theme to every Fourth of July celebration.  This year’s theme is Let Freedom Ring.

Please note that on Friday, July 3rd, the Beach will be closed between Oakwood Street and Hollywood Street beginning at 5 p.m. in order to get ready for the Town’s 4th of July fireworks displays.  Make sure to pick all your beach items in this area.  The beach will re-open on Sunday, July 5th.

dscn5771

Fourth of July:  Registration

You may register your floats and bikes the day of the parade from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at the registration desks as follows:  Floats-Route 1 and Central Avenue; Bikes-Christian Church grounds.

Fourth of July:  Schedule

Noon…The parade will begin at the intersection of Pennsylvania and Garfield Parkway and take its traditional 2 mile route through the town.  It will feature 5 marching bands and 6 entertainment groups on trucks with marching units.

After the parade, enjoy the following activities:

2 p.m.  Try your skill at the horseshoe-throwing contest at the southwest corner of the Christian Church grounds.

7:15 p.m.  Award Ceremony

7:30 p.m.  The Vigilantes band performs popular dance music on the Bandstand.  The 2015 Summer Concert Series continue all summer long.  On Sunday, July 5th the entertainment will be The Reagan Years, and 80’s Tribute.  All concerts begin at 7:30 unless otherwise noted.  These concerts are popular and perfect for summer evenings at the beach.  For more info., please visit http://www.townofbethanybeach.com.  Click on Activities and scroll down to Bandstand.

dscn0377

Dusk:  FIREWORKS!!  No July 4th event would be complete without them!!!

dscn5780

Around 40,000 people attend the celebrations all day long with the culmination of the Fireworks.  As you can imagine traffic and parking can be a hassle.  Best deal in town are the Trolleys.  They run continuously between 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.  You can flag down the trolley anywhere along the route for pick-up or discharge, except on Rt. 26 and Rt. 1.  No pick-up or drop-off on Jefferson Bridge or Rt. 26.  The fare is $.25.  The driver does not make change  Please note that the trolley no longer stops at the Lake Bethany entrance or the South Coastal Library.  For more information, please call 302-539-1996, or visit http://www.townofbethanybeach.com.  Click on Services and scroll down to Trolley.

Sunday, July 5th, is the Bethany Beach Farmers Market, from 8 a.m. until Noon at Garfield Parkway and Pennsylvania Avenue.  More info?  Please visit http://www.bethanybeachfarmersmarket.com.

Have a great holiday week-end!!

Delaware Boardwalks, Ocean City Boardwalk, Summer 2015 is Open for Business

Rehoboth Beach

Rehoboth Beach

Gates have opened and visitors have been arriving since Thursday evening.  A beautiful day in Delmarva with blue skies, slightly cool temperatures, and no humidity….So perfect and hard to believe that there is no rain in the forecast for Memorial Day!!

Boardwalks are the center of the coastal towns of Rehoboth Beach, Bethany Beach and Ocean City, Maryland.  Early in the a.m. joggers, bikers, walkers….pooches too, are seen enjoying glorious days at the beach.

Hard to believe that the 3 mile long Ocean City Boardwalk, was once rolled up and stored under porches during high tide.  Please visit http://www.ococean.com.

Ocean City

Ocean City

Stop by Dolles for some amazing Sea Salt fudge…love it…among other sweet sensations.  Every morsel is made in-house.

dscn4703

Summer in Bethany Beach, Delaware, revolves around the Boardwalk.  This boardwalk is not as long as the other two, but offers so much to its visitors….entertainment or just the fact that you can take a seat on those iconic benches and look out to the Atlantic Ocean.  Please visit http://www.townofbethanybeach.com.

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, is also known as The Nation’s Summer Capital.  The award-winning Boardwalk is a mile long.  Just make sure that when you get to the end on both sides of the boardwalk you touch the railing….it’s a local’s thing.  The entertainment begins on the Boardwalk every week.  Check http://www.rehobothbandstand.com

Lucky for the coastal towns that do have boardwalks.  They are successful commercial districts and tourist attractions for the whole family.

Bethany Beach Eats! The Parkway, Restaurant, Bethany Beach, Delaware, Entertainment, The Bethany Beach Bandstand, Saturday, The E Street Shuffle, Sunday, The Vigilantes Acoustic Duo, Southern Delaware, Summer 2014, Delaware Beaches

dscn0374

Tic Toc, Tic Toc, it seems these last few weeks of the official Summer 2014 are coming too quickly.  In Bethany Beach and looking for some dining and entertaining this week-end?  Here is my suggestion.

Make sure you feed your meter, otherwise there will be no mercy.

The Parkway Restaurant has been in Bethany Beach, Delaware since 1997.  They open at 5 p.m. for dinner and they do accept reservations.  Tel. 302-537-7500.  Website?  http://www.parkwaydana.com.  Just like many restaurants at the Delaware Beaches, the menu changes constantly.

The Parkway has a big following and plenty of their customers travel to Bethany Beach just to eat at this local favorite.

Some of us ordered The Parkway House Salad.  Mixed field greens, bell peppers, peppered pistachios, cherry tomatoes, crispy sun chokes, sweet walnut-maple vinaigrette.

dscn0366

People love their meatloaf….so when Missy saw it on the menu she got it.  Traditional meatloaf full of flavor.

dscn0368

An order of Chilean Seabass followed….having eaten halibut a few days before, Debbie, thought this would be the perfect choice.

dscn0369

OMG…My Softshells were delicious.  I love softshells more than anything.  If they have them, they are a must.

dscn0371

No dessert was necessary…we were in a rush to get to the Bandstand, which by the way, is within walking distance.  Tonight, Saturday, 8/23, The E Street Shuffle, a Bruce Springsteen Tribute, and tomorrow, Sunday, 8/24, The Vigilantes Acoustic Duo, a genre of rock/pop.  Entertainment starts at 7:30 p.m.  Under the stars!

dscn0377

Have a great day!!

dscn5571

This is so interesting…Did you know that prior to the 1950s, no railroad came to Bethany Beach?  You would have to travel by train to Baltimore, Maryland, spend the night there, then, travel by boat across the Chesapeake Bay to the Delmarva Peninsula and by train across the peninsula to Rehoboth Beach.  Still, you had to board a steamer, prior to 1910, called Atlantic, across Rehoboth Bay and Indian River Bay to Ocean View, then, on horse drawn carriage to Bethany Beach.

On July 1910, the Loop Canal was completed in Bethany Beach, therefore, you could take the motorboat Allie May.  In 1912 the Helen Marie II replaced Allie May, to dock at the town itself.   Exhausting to say the least!!

dscn5416

Bethany Beach is still considered a Quiet Resort.  The town gets so packed in the summer and then, a well deserved rest through the winter.  The Second Season brings a lot of visitors; it is one of the best times of the year.

dscn4850

The best way to travel through Bethany Beach is by taking the Trolley.  It is the best deal in town.  Can you believe that it is still $.25 each way?  The driver does not make change so make sure you have quarters.  It is in service through mid September from 9:30 a.m. until 10:00 p.m.  Last pick up at Atlantic & Garfield is at 9:45 p.m.

You can flag down the Trolley  along the routes for pick up and discharge except on Rt. 26 & Rt. 1.  For more info., please visit http://www.townofbethanybeach.com, then click on Services and scroll down to Trolley.

dscn5422

Life in our small coastal towns revolves, in the summer, around the Boardwalk and the Bandstand.  The Bethany Beach Boardwalk, along with the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk were named in the top Boardwalks of the United States.

dscn5429

Performances at The Bandstand:  Shows begin at 7:30 p.m. unless noted.  Hot line is 302-539-5484

Sunday, 7/22 – Dialtones – Rock n’ Roll from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Check http://www.thefabulousdialtones.com

Friday, 7/27 – U.S. Navy Cruisers – This is the premier U.S. Navy’s contemporary entertainment ensemble.  The name comes from the Navy’s versatile, flexible, multi-missioned ship, The Cruiser.  Genres of music range from jazz and standards, rhythm and blues, classic rock, adult contemporary, and original material.

Saturday, 7/28 – City of Fairfax Band – This band is from Northern Virginia and the Washington, D.C. area.  The musicians come from varying musical backgrounds.  Performers are from all walks of life; they share the love of music.

Bethany Beach by Jack Lewis '93

The town of Bethany is a small family resort town right on the beach.  It is what you would want to expect of a seaside resort.  The center of the town is its Boardwalk and Bandstand.  Shops, restaurants, basketball courts and playground are just a block a way from each other.  It is the perfect town for walking, jogging or strolling.  And, let’s not forget that beautiful beach that stretches for miles.  Each street in Bethany seems to lead its visitors right to the water’s edge.

Prior to the early 50’s, it took some time to get to Bethany Beach.  There was no railroad connection.  You really must have wanted to visit Bethany because you had to travel first to Baltimore, Maryland.  Spend the night in Charm City and then travel by boat across the Chesapeake Bay to the Delmarva Peninsula.  Then, take the train across the peninsula to Rehoboth Beach.  Until 1910, the visitors would have to take the steamer, Atlantic, across Rehoboth Bay to Ocean View and travel by horsedrawn carriage to Bethany.  After 1910 the Loop Canal was completed allowing the motorboat to dock directly in Bethany.
