Friday, October, 17th – “THE HISTORY OF DELAWARE LICENSE PLATES” A First State Culture! – Lewes Historical Society Speaker Series will present this event at the Lewes Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall. Enter the parking lot from Franklin Street. The programs are free and open to the public. This particular evening should be of interest to so many that value their Delaware license plates. In most states the license tag on their cars is just that, a tag, but for some states like Delaware vehicle owners have embraced license plate ownership as a status symbol and a connection to their past. Mike Williams, Chief of Communications for the Delaware State Division of Motor Vehicles will be the speaker on this evening.
Mr. Williams, is a native of Delaware. He will include in his discussion the desirable black and white procelain sets from the 1940s, the black stainless steel tags from the 1950s, and the story behind the controversial front style changes in the early 1990s.

Saturday, October 18th – HISTORIC LEWES FARMERS MARKET – Saturdays from 9 a.m. until Noon at Shields Elementary School Parking Lot on Savannah Rd. A producer only farmers market and a place for the community and visitors to gather every week. Celebrating Jazz Festival at the Market, special guest Everett Spells will be present entertaining the crowds. Saturday, October 18th – BATTERY 519 OPEN HOUSE – Fort Miles was a key part of the nation’s coastal defense during and after WWII. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Tuesday, 6/11 – Summer Concert at Stango Park – Captain Blue’s Grass Band. The genre? Bluegrass. 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Take your blanket, chair, or both, friends and bug spray. Beautiful Stango Park in Lewes is next to the Lewes Public Library along King’s Highway.
Wednesday, 6/12 – Seining the Bay – Search the shallows with a seine net, catching fish, snails, shrimp, crabs, and other critters. Dress appropriately; you will get wet. No flip-flops. Friday, 6/14 – Family Boat-Building Weekend on the Banks of the Canal – Lewes was a shipbuilding town, where hundreds of vessels were built. Rekindle this art in Lewes as part of their Family Boatbuilding Weekend over Father’s Day weekend. Support their participating groups and families as they build wooden boats called “Bevin Skiffs” June 14-16 in front of the Lewes Lifesaving Station to view more than 16 wooden boats made by wood boat enthusiasts. Saturday, 6/15 – The 23rd Annual Lewes Garden Tour 2013 – Rain or Shine!! It is sponsored by The Lewes Chamber of Commerce, http://www.leweschamber.com. This is a self-guuided tour of 7 private gardens and one public garden in the Historic Seaport town of Lewes. Five of this year’s gardens are all located in or near the Historic Distric. Many of them are walking distance from the Zwaanendael Park where the Garden market and the Chamber’s Visitor Center are located. Two of the gardens are located on the Lewes Beach-side of the canal.
Lewes’ newest public garden will be on the tour. The Children’s Learning Garden, designed to teach children about all aspects of gardening, is a new initiative by Lewes in Bloom, the award-winning volunteer organization responsible for the beautification of Lewes.
It will be a fun day with more than 40 vendors specializing in garden related retail items and working artists will be in the tour gardens painting. Tour visitors can enjoy beverages and lunch in the Refreshment Tent provided by Cafe Amici in Zwaanendael Park with coffee service beginning at 8 a.m. During the hours of the tour, free shuttle service is available for ticket holders.

Not so quick to think we are hibernating at the Delaware Beaches. Usually the week following a holiday week-end is quiet at the Delaware Beaches; more so this time of the year. If you are visiting Lewes, Rehoboth, Milton, Clarksville (west of Bethany Beach), then check what’s going on…
Friday, 1/20 – Lewes – Star Gazing Starry Night at the Cape Henlopen State Park. Learn how to find the familiar star patterns known as constellations and learn the stories they tell as we go outside and explore the night skies. Ages 10 and older with an adult. $2/person. At 6:30 p.m. This program is led by a naturalist and will meet at the Seaside Nature Center inside the Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes. Follow the signs. Friday, 1/20 – Milton, DE – Documentary – An Evolving Legacy: Delaware’s Coastal Act. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Venue? The Milton Fire Hall located at 116 Front St., Milton, Delaware. Delmarva Roots is a series of films about the rich history of the Delmarva region. If you missed it at the Film Festival then here is another chance.
Forty years ago, Governor Russell W. Peterson championed Delaware’s landmark Coastal Zone Act to preserve the Delaware shoreline. Before Peterson’s death last February at the age of 94, he was interviewed. He recounted the dramatic struggle to craft and pass this visionary legislation. In addition to reporting his story, the film explores the 40 year history of the Coastal Zone Act, and presents the ongoing challenges all Delawareans face in the struggle to balance the desire for industrial development with a love for unspoiled natural habitats. After the screening, Director Michael Oates will lead a question and answer session about the production of the film.
Friday, 1/20 – Lewes – The Lewes Historical Society Presents Jim Horn “Remembering Rehoboth Beach’s Glory Days” – at the Lewes Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall, Kings Highway in Lewes. 7:30 – 9:00 p.m.
Rehoboth native, Jim Horn, will be the featured speaker on the history of Rehoboth Beach. He will share his family’s collection of photos taken over time, recording much of the history of Rehoboth’s development and growth. His family’s enterprises in the early 1900’s included the Rehoboth dance pavilion, roller rink, stores, the Auditorium Theater in Lewes, the Del-Reho Casino and the Blue Hen Theater.
