Out & About, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk, Week-Ends at The Beach, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

dscn2054

Looking out the window, I am wondering what the heck happened to the sun?  It was so gorgeous on Sunday at the beaches, that I called my neighbor and asked her if she wanted to take a walk around Rehoboth Beach.

dscn2045

Rehoboth Beach is a great town to walk. The Boardwalk is award-winning and the iconic benches line this popular boardwalk just in case you want to relax and people watch.  Sunday was one of those days that even though it was a bit cool, the beaches were packed.  Some were at the water’s edge with sweaters, some were shopping, others were just enjoying one beautiful day.  And others decided to just eat and have something to drink.

dscn2048

The Greyhounds stayed in Dewey but they also made the rounds in Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  At least they had one good sunny day this week-end.

dscn2046

dscn2047

Walking through The Pines, a neighborhood, between Downtown Rehoboth Beach and Henlopen Acres, we stopped to check out 2 Open Houses.  One new construction and the other one a house that had been built in the 1940s and was still owned by the family.  We got a bird’s eye view from the top of this house, whose “upper deck” was a later addition.

dscn2049

On our walk we stopped at Anita Peghini-Raber Gallery.  It is located at 49 Baltimore Avenue.  Anita is an expressionist; she is also self-taught.  Website?  http://www.rehobothart.com.

dscn2053

What’s Happening at the gallery?

dscn2051

Oriental Dance with Viviana on Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.  $10 donation at the door.

Tango de Arte takes place the last Saturday of the month.  A free class from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. From 9 p.m. dance until……late.  Please visit http://www.tangolewes.com.

dscn2052

These events are well attended and they tell me that they are so much fun!!

Hungry and late in the afternoon we decided to stop at Semra’s Mediterranean Grill.  It is located at 19 Rehoboth Avenue.  John and Semra are the owners and they are always at the restaurant.  I cannot say enough about their cuisine.  Everything is made in house. Website?  http://www.semras.com.  Tel. 302-727-5964.  Sema’s is on Facebook.  Watch for Belly Dancing Events coming up in the months to come.

You know, it is really interesting, because I can say that I can make a Mousaka, but when Mousaka is served at Semra’s it takes your palate to a different dimension.  Their spices are sent by relatives and the taste is delicate, with dishes perfectly seasoned.

dscn2055

My dish was traditional from Semra’s city in Turkey…..except I forgot if it was called Manti, Monti…hopefully she will correct me.  It was light, and Semra’s described it that way.  Ground lamb with amazing spices and with just a hint of heat, topped with tzatziki (yogurt) sauce.

dscn2057

Off we went back to our car….Lucky to live at the beach and never take it for granted.  Have a great day!!

Art continues to make a statement in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.  Second Saturdays of the month take a self-guided gallery tour in Downtown Rehoboth….it is an Art Walk sponsored by the Rehoboth Beach Gallery Collective:  MOSAIC.  This is a year round event from 6 – 9 p.m.  For more information, please visit http://www.mosaicrehoboth.com.

Rehoboth Beach is one square mile, the Atlantic Ocean is the background of this coastal town.  Throughout the town shops, art galleries, restaurants, bars, theater and entertainment afford the vacationers the ability to enjoy it all within walking distance. From the beach to all these amenities is awesome….plenty for the young ones to do, as well.

Baltimore Avenue is one of Rehoboth’s trendiest streets.  Crawling or strolling the shops, and galleries is a daily addiction for many.  Rehoboth artists are diverse and unique.  One such artist is Anita Peghini-Raber.  She opened her gallery at 49 Baltimore Avenue. about 3 years ago. Tel. 302-227-2888.  Websites?  http://www.anitapeghini-raber.com, http://www.rehobothart.com.

Anita’s joie de vivre is contagious.  She is funny, friendly and a naturalist-expressionist painter.  She is self tought, has worked hard….totally immersed in the communities at the Delaware Beaches.  And it is paing off with accolades statewide, nationally and internationally.  Congratulations!!

dscn0943

Anita Peghini-Raber Gallery calls home a charming cottage on Baltimore Avenue.  Stop by and say hello.

dscn0944

Another passion of Anita is dancing.  Tango dancing takes place the last Saturday of each month.  A Milonga or Social Dance Party is held at the gallery.  I have not been, but appaarently it is a lot of fun.  Call 302-227-2888 for more information.  Check this article, Tango Speaks to The Spirit, at http://www.delmarvanow.com/story/life/arts/2014/07/17/tango-lewes/12812249.  That’s Anita on the photo with her husband, Paolo.

I asked Anita which a favorite painting….she pointed to the Tango Dancers….and nearby were her own Tango dancing shoes!!

dscn0945dscn0946

On Thursdays the Gallery hosts Art & Belly….belly dancing classes for all levels.  6:30 p.m.  A $10 donation is al that is needed.

If you are spending time in Rehoboth Beach, check the gallery, learn to tango, and catch a belly dancing class…..among Anita Peghini-Raber’s paintings.

Have a great time!!

“A film is – or should be- more like music than like fiction.  It should be a progression of moods and feelings.  The theme, what’s behind the emotion, the meaning, all that comes later.”     s. kubrick

Just around the corner is the Independent Rehoboth Beach Film Festival.  The dates are November 9th until the 13th.  For more info. please visit http://www.rehobothfilm.com.

img_7288

In the meantime, Wednesday and Thursday of this week there will be some interesting films and documentaries that are worth taking a look at.

Wednesday, October 5th – Free and at 7 p.m. at Movies at Midway located on Rt. 1 in Rehoboth you will find a screening of The Colors of the Mountain.  It will be in the upstairs Screening Room.

This film is part of the Around the World Series which feature critically acclaimed award winning and international films.

“Young Manuel lives with his hard-working farmer parents in the remote, mountainous region of the Colombian country side.  While the local adults try to avoid both the armed military and the guerilla rebels fighting each other in the area, Manuel and his friend, Julian are obsessed with playing soccer any chance they get….”  Disaster strikes when Julian’s soccer ball, given to him for his birthday gets kicked off to a minefield….How far will they go to recover their prized posession.    Not rated in Spanish with English subtitles.

Thursday, October 6th – Cinema & Art – Rebecca and Who Does She Think She Is?  At the Inn at Canal Square in the Historic town of Lewes at 6:30 p.m.  Admission?  $15  Light refreshments will be served.

For tickets please call 302-645-9095, ext. 1.  Or, visit www.rehobothfilm.com.

Rebecca – Artists who happen to be mothers are the focus of this Cinema & Art.

Discover local mother and artists, Rebecca Raubacher in the short documentary, Rebecca.  Directed by her daughter, Riley Raubacher, the film provides an intimate glimpse into the Rehoboth artist’s life as he builds a career combining her love of art and horses.    6 minutes.

The next documentary asks why in a half-changed world, women often feel they need to choose between mothering and working, their children’s well being and their own.

Who Does She Think She Is?  was directed by Academy Award Winning filmmaker, Pamela Tanner Boo and it features 5 fierce women who refuse to choose.  Through their lives the film explores some of the most problematic choices female artists are forced to make – between mothering and creativity, partnering and independence, and economics and art.

The film reminds the audience that in ancient times, women were worshipped as cultural muses.  Ironically, in mothern times most people can’t even name a handful of female artists.

Following the screening Rebecca Raubacher, Anita Peghini-Raber and Kim Klabe will discuss their experiences juggling motherhood and a career as an artist.

Kim Klabe – She is a Rehoboth Beach “oil painter who focuses on familiar, local sights, quaint cottages, again farmhouses and beach homes that capture the essence of Sussex Couty in days gone by”.

Anita Peghini-Raber – She has made Rehoboth her home.  Naturalistic Expressionism is her medium.

Rebecca Raubacher is the co-owner of the Rebecca Gallery in downtown Dover, Delaware.  She works from her own sketches, never from photographs.  More info? Then, visit www.raubachergallery.com.

IMG_0079_1

Swiss Painter, Anita Peghini-Raber is considered to be a local in Rehoboth Beach.  Like me, she has lived here for a long time.  A local; but not a native.

For years I did not even know that she was an artist.  Not only did I not know that, but I also did not know that she was self taught.

IMG_0085_1

The Delaware Beaches and its artist community has embraced her wholehartedly.  She will be exhibiting a Solo Show at the Warner Gallery, in the O’Brien Arts Center on Friday, April 15th at 6:45 p.m.  The Exhibit is called Paint On!  If you want to know more about Anita and her art, please visit www.rehobothart.com.

The Warner Gallery welcomes visitors to the O’Brien Arts Center; opened to the public in 2004.  Location?  St. Andrew’s School, 350 Noxontown Rd., Middletown, DE 19709.
