Out and about is where I found myself yesterday; you know errands, hair appt., delivering figs to Madelon, stopping at the Lifesaving Station, etc. etc.
It was late in the afternoon, almost at sunset and as I was approaching Dewey Beach I decided to detour and enter New Road on the Bay. There was nobody collecting the entry fee. This spot is part of the Delaware State Parks.
As I was taking in the view I could not help to think how lucky we are to live in this coastal area. Open spaces, marshes, wild birds, the beach.

I watched the fisherman at the distance. I needed to approach him. He was seine fishing. A seine is a large fishing net that hangs in the water by attaching weights along the bottom edge and floats along the top. They are used to encircle schools of fish.

I was able to talk to him and watch him carry the net full of fish to his cooler. It looked like I was stalking him but no; this was an unexpected post for my blog.

I could not believe that the cooler was almost full with Menhaden fish. He said it only took him about 1/2 hour. Menhaden is a silvery herring-like fish that travels in large schools. It is considered inedible for humans but processed into oil for cosmetics and fish meal for animals, particularly poultry.

Then I spotted the clammer; his family joined him. The Delaware Bay is so shallow in this area that they were able to really walk out far.

I loved finding that lonely chair on the bay. The Bay was quiet, serene, still and so picturesque; then my next thought was I better go home because, “ouch”, the “no-see-ums” are getting to me.

Talk to you later…..you know I will….
Note: If you feel like grilling on this area, there is a barbecue grill and 2 picnic tables available to the public.

It’s so funny, I just don’t think about it, but, when I want to go to Bethany Beach I just get in my car; I live in Rehoboth, and in no time I am in Bethany.

Many years ago it was such a trip. I thought about it on Saturday, as I was checking out Bethany. On Friday I had tried to find parking, to no avail. So, I went back on Saturday and as I was looking for that elusive parking space I noticed the Historical Marker placed on the corner of Pennsylvania and 1st Street.

There is a bench and a small deck for viewing the area called the Loop Canal.

The Loop Canal was completed on 7/8/1910. This was its centennial anniversary. It marked the end of a long journey for vacationers traveling to Bethany Beach in the early days. Arriving in Rehoboth by railroad, travelers would continue their voyage by boat, crossing Rehoboth and Indian River Bays to the Assawoman Canal.

The last part of the trip? A 2 horse drawn “bus” through the deep sand to Bethany. To make it better, a shallow waterway was dredged from the Assawoman to this location on Pennsylvania and 1st Street.

With the opening of the Canal, travelers could complete the final leg of their journey by boarding a single boat in Rehoboth. The shallow-draft motorboat was called the Allie May and could not back up, so a loop was formed at the 1st Street dock to allow the boat to turn around for its return trip.

I did find that parking spot, more than a few streets north of Garfield Parkway, which is the “Main Street” in Bethany. This town is looking so pretty. I tend to call it the beautification of Bethany Beach. There are flowers all over the place. And, not just stuck in the ground; the mulch, the combination of colors are beautiful. Who is this person that is doing such beautiful work? I called the town office because I want to thank her for a job well done. I found out that her name is Melinda. So, thanks, it really does look pretty.

I took a walk along the Bethany Beach Boardwalk where a lot of the entertainment takes place every week. It is a meeting place; enjoying the fries, ice cream or just a simple walk. It was so hot and the beach was crowded.

It brings back memories because this town was my children’s playground for so many years.

Four wheels move the body. Two wheels move the soul.
I decided to go to Lewes, Delaware, yesterday afternoon and meet my friend, Shelley. The coastal towns in Delaware are busy and crowded. Summer, as we know it, is coming to an end.
We were walking right in front of Cafe Azafran and behind Half Full when we stopped to gaze at the motorcyle, just parked there. The Indian Drifter.
Never trade the thrills of living for the security of existence.
If you don't ride in the rain you don't ride.
Two helmets and no riders around. But, look at it. It looked amazing. Beautiful and I am not a rider.
Only a Biker knows why a dog sticks his head out a car window.
As I started taking the pictures, the riders came out laughing. It was that laughter that got my attention. They were definitely having fun.
I did not know them. They allowed me to take their picture and they were from Milton, Delaware, just north of Lewes. Locals? Natives? Don’t know either.
Young riders pick a destination and go...Old riders pick a direction and go.
It was a couple enjoying their time together….priceless!!

August 3rd, 2010

On Monday it was time to let my hair down a bit, put my dancing shoes and follow Paula and Nancy to the Bottle & Cork. These 2 friends are fans of The Greaseband.

The Greaseband has been performing in Dewey Beach for the past 25 plus years. The band has been around for 35 years.

This summer they are entertaining their fans at the Bottle & Cork, located in Dewey Beach, right on Rt. 1. On April 29th I wrote a post about this famous Rock & Roll Bar and if you would like to see it, just go to the month of April under Archives and scroll down to the date.

It was unexpected fun for a Monday. I had never seen their performance and it was great. The Bottle & Cork was packed. By the time we got there, people were already dancing and The Greaseband was playing.

I guess my last post was about what children can do in Dewey and tonight the post is for what the more matured crowd can do.
The age group was definitely a little older than what you would expect in Dewey; there were some in their 20’s but the majority was definitely older.

You know what was so nice to see? How much fun everyone was having. The members of The Greaseband know a lot of the people in attendance; they have been followed for years. The audience sings, dances, jumps up and down with big smiles on their faces.

The Greaseband plays music from the 50’s to the 90’s Rock ‘n’ Roll. They will be performing at 9:15 p.m. every Monday at the Bottle & Cork until August 23rd. More info? Please call 302-227-7272.
If you would like to know more about them including their schedules, story, bookings, etc., please visit their website www.greaseband.com.
The dancing was contagious; cannot wait to go again!!

Talk to you later….
