Destination? Bethany Beach, Delaware, The Quiet Resort, Events, Bethany Beach Breast Cancer, 5K Fun Run & 3K Walk, Vance Kane Memorial Fund, Little Pink Houses of Hope, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

A sense of community, small town atmosphere, a family destination….the ocean, tax free shopping, and plenty of dining…..that’s Bethany Beach, Delaware.

dscn9613img_3946

A big shout to Ann (Annie) Raskauskas, who never stops.  She is the founder of the Annual 5K Fun Run & 3K Walk.  This event happens the second week-end in May every year.  Once again plenty of runners and walkers came to Bethany Beach to help with a good cause.

dscn9556

Annie welcomed everyone…the teams, which were so funny, trying to out do each other.  The theme for 2014 was “Take A Swing Against Breast Cancer”.

Carol got everyone to stretch before the run on the Boardwalk, and presented this young winner with her prize.

This is a feel good event.  So many supporters; everyone knows someone with breast cancer.  This year’s beneficiaries were:  Vance Kane Memorial Fund, supporting Beebe’s Breast Health Center, 302-644-2900.  And, Little Pink Houses of Hope, providing week long beach retreats for breast cancer families.  This year’s retreat is coming up the first week in June.  Their website is http://www.littlepinkhousesofhope.org.

dscn9570

dscn9571

My late husband, John, was a big supporter of the Bethany Beach Breast Cancer.  A banner thanking us, his family, was much appreciated.

dscn9581

Even though this event is already over, the work begins immediately for 2015.  If you are interested in donating or knowing more about Bethany Beach Breast Cancer, please visit http://www.bethanybeachbreastcancer.com.

So, pencil it on your calendar….Second week-end in May.  Already the theme for next year is settled.  Talk to you later.

Destination? Rehoboth Beach Museum, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Cruisin’, Exhibit Opens, Toys on Wheels, Saturday, May 24th, Activities, Events, Rehoboth Beach Museum Looks Forward To Meeting You, Let 2014 Summer Begin!!, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

RBHS_Mural_in_place

And hello to you too!!  Welcome to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

Have you seen the new mural that has been added to the front of the Rehoboth Beach Museum?  It is a dramatic “Dive Into History” mural…..A Mermaid!!!  Look at it….it is a bright red, vintage bathing-suited diver, with bathing cap and all.

Museum_Mural_Lift_into_Place

Nancy Alexander is the Museum Executive Director and she states that “While we have always felt that the Museum needed better signage to attract visitors as they drive out Rehoboth Avenue, we’ve wanted to make sure that the images themselves match the history of Rehoboth Beach.  What could be more perfect than a large mural celebrating swimming at the beach, and promoting the idea of delving into the history of Rehoboth Beach.”

The Rehoboth Beach Museum is expecting a large turn-out of visitors for the upcoming seasons.  The mural stands as a visual icon of Rehoboth Beach’s past and present charm, Nancy mentioned.

I think that for many that have loved to come to Rehoboth Beach for so many years….a stop at the Museum will inform you about this coastal town’s past, and how it really has become a destination year-round.

Beginning Memorial Day week-end, the Museum will open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.   Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.  It is located at 511 Rehoboth Avenue, right by the roundabout and the Visitor Center.  Admission is by donation.  Parking is available.  More info.?  Please call 302-227-7310 or visit http://www.rehobothbeachmuseum.org.

CRUISIN’ EXHIBIT OPENS SATURDAY, MAY 24th.

RBHS_Cruisin'_Exhibit

Cruisin’ at the Rehoboth Beach Museum celebrates the historical perspective and joy of playing with toys on wheels.  You are invited to relive memories of recreational times of the past, and enjoy this exhibit of vintage bicycles and toys with wheels on loan from local collectors.

The photo above is of a cast iron motorcycle, most likely made by the Hubley toy company in the 1930’s and will be on display at the Cruisin’ exhibit.

And what further can you expect from this exhibit?

You will see a Scooter Skudder Ball Bearing Car, made around 1919 by the Janesville Products Co. in Janesville, WI, a 1950’s Ladybug Riding Toy, created by Margarete Steiff of Giengen, Germany, that has a seat cover made of Mohair stuffed with straw and was enjoyed by toddlers, and a Fire City Battalion #1 fire truck, made by the Murray Co. in Ohio.

Bicycles on display will include a Western Flyer Speedline Airflo Bicycle first manufactured in the 1930’s, and a 1953 Roadmaster.  Toys will include cast iron motorcycles, metal trucks and cars.

SATURDAY, JUNE 14th  –  The Wheelman, a national vintange bicycle organization will, in conjunction with the Cruizin’ exhibit, present a day-long demonstration of vintage bicycles in Grove Park located right by the Museum and Visitor Center from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The Wheelman is a non-profit organization dedicated to keeping alive the heritage of American cycling, promoting the restoration and riding of early cycles manufactured prior to 1918, and encouraging cycling as part of modern living.  Mor info.?  Please visit http://www.thewheelmen.org.

Have a great day!!

Rehoboth Beach Eats!, Meatless, Chili Bean Salad, Healthy, Easy, Gluten Free, Summer Favorite, Simply Cooking, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

“The table is a meeting place, a gathering ground, the source of sustenance and nourishment, festivity, safety, and satisfaction.”  laurie colwin

So, can you believe it?  The beginning of summer 2014.  The crowds making the summer pilgrimage to the Delaware Beaches.   It is a destination.  You know you are going to have guests….that’s what happens when you live at the beach.  You might as well get ready.  Easy summer recipes are the best.  Making them ahead of time, let them sit in the refrigerator…that’s even better.

This recipe came from a friend by the name of Mary Jo.  It is one of those recipes that you can make it your own immediately.  I have changed it through the years.  At times I add a little bit of this or a little bit of that.  It looks pretty.  I love it because it is so refreshing and healthy.  And for those who have to eat gluten free, then you will be so happy with it.  Here it goes.

dscn9702

CHILI BEAN SALAD

1 15 ounce can kidney beans

1 15 ounce can pinto beans

1 15 ounce can garbanzo beans

1 15 ounce can whole-kernel corn (low sodium)

1 cup chopped green onions

1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

2 4-ounce cans chopped green chilies

Note:  You can replace the beans with your favorite ones.  I love black beans so at times I replace one of the beans and also replace parsley with cilantro.  I am telling you….pretty easy.

Dressing:    4 tablespoons olive or canola oil

1/2 cup apple cider vinegar

1 garlic clove, minced

2 teaspoons chili powder

2 teaspoons leaf oregano

1/2 teaspoon ground cumin

1/2 teaspoon hot pepper sauce

Drain and rinse the beans and corn.

Put all dressing ingredients in a jar; shake well to mix.

Combine all ingredients except dressing in a large serving bowl.  Pour dressing over salad, mix well.

Cover and chill 6 hours or overnight, stirring frequently.  How easy is that?

Note:  It can easily be doubled.
