“You don’t have to cook fancy or complicated masterpieces; just good food from fresh ingredients.” julia child
Word of mouth was that the place to be on Monday, July 8th, was going to be at the Waystead Inn, located at 15 Harrison Avenue, Berlin, MD 21811. Tel. 443-856-4755. Berlin’s own Burley Oak Brewery, located at 10016 Old Ocean City Blvd., partnered with Chef Eric from Waystead Inn, and Chef Toby Gilbert from the Grove Market. It was going to be a casual evening, where friends would get together to catch up and some new friends would be made, as well.
Waystead Inn is a Bed & Breakfast that offers 5 guest rooms with private bathrooms. All modern facilities…restored with 21st century amenities, and a wrap-around porch. Their Wednesday Dinners prepared by Chef and Innkeeper, Eric, are selling out quickly. Please visit their website, http://www.waysteadinn.com, to find out what other events are on the schedule, including future dinners.
I have to tell you that one of the reasons that I was looking forward to this dinner was because I had heard that Chef Toby was creating some unique dishes. He, apparently, is also fearless in his kitchen. Picking up my friend, Debbie, was a no brainer, she was game.
Waystead Inn is very pretty in its simplicity…a quiet and peaceful retreat after the hectic 4th of July.
A round of beers from Burley Oak Brewery…Made in Maryland. Website? http://www.burleyoak.com.
Chef Eric welcomed us all and explained that some dishes were going to be served family style. Toby and him would be sharing the kitchen.
As dishes arrived at the table…everyone waited for the person taking the photos…me. So, let me tell you about the menu.
Charcuterie Board by Chef Toby – Soft Stout Ricotta, Harder Wheat Beer Ricotta, IPA Spicy Pickles, Honey Wheat Sweet Pickles, Hop Cured Duck Prosciutto, and local pig and rude boy headcheese. I love this presentation with a favorite of the Hop Cured Duck Prosciutto and the rude boy headcheese. Toby stopped by the table to describe his creation.
Ruder Shrimp Pizza by Chef Eric – Just the Tip in the dough and Rude Boy beer cooked Shrimp with Roasted Peppers, Caramelized Onions and Dry-Aged Wisconsin Cheddar.
We had a chatty group at our table. We all put our 2 cents in. And, some of us got into staging our meals.
Bryan, from Burley Oak was making the rounds…and a stop at a our table to see how we were doing. Exciting things happening at Burley Oak Brewery. They offer Brewery tours on Saturday, and Sunday at 3 p.m. Please visit the website above mentioned to check them out.
I really liked the Fish and Chips by Chef Toby – The Truffle Chips were so good and….at this point my low fat diet was slowly in decline after this dish. The fish was beer battered cod, with a vinegar gel sheet.
By the time the Beef Sausage, by Chef Eric, came along we were completely satisfied, but we managed a few bites. It was a homemade beef sausage with garlic and apples. Served with a Pale Ryder Stone Ground Mustard.
We were really looking forward to dessert. A Sweet Corn Ice Cream by Chef Toby – Local sweet corn and beer soft-serve, chocolate ganache, beer caramel, honeydew and cantaloupe spheres, lemon zest!! Awesome combination!
And, more spheres for our table!!! The End; until next time. Thanks Toby.
Notes: Waystead Inn – No Children under 12, and no pets. No smoking inside. Two guests per room. Find them on Facebook.
Burley Oak Brewery can be found on Facebook and Twitter.

Saturday, July 13th, is a special day for children 6 years and older that would love to walk in the steps of a lighthouse keeper! Children will be able to tour the Delaware East End Breakwater Lighthouse, and get close to the Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse.
The scheduled tours by the Delaware River & Bay Lighthouse Foundation are for children with a minimum age of 12, so, this is indeed a unique day to see these marvels of the 19th century, which are the first structures of their kind to be built in the western hemisphere.
Fare for children 6-12 years old is $25 per child. Fare for 12 and above is $35. Limit one child per adult. Children must be in the direct, active supervision of that adult all the time. Departure time is 9 a.m.
Tours depart from the pier located behind the Cape May-Lewes Ferry Terminal in Lewes, Delaware. Free parking is available in the Foot Passenger Lot.
Reservations are recommended as tickets are limited to 24 per tour. Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to departure time as safety briefing is required before visitors board the launch.
Life jackets are provided and must be worn. No sandals or open-toe shoes are allowed.
Please visit http://www.delawarebaylights.org/tours.html. Or, call 302-644-7046.
Note: I have taken the tour and recommend it. One way is to see them from afar, but up close…they are magnificent!! Today, as I rode the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, I once again had time to admire the Harbor of Refuge as the ferry went by.

Happy Birthday, RBSA!! Since 1963 this sailing club has been in Southern Delaware, instructing the young and the matured crowd how to sail. RBSA is a non profit sailing club, and, besides instruction, they also have sailboat rentals to the general public throughout the summer season.
It is located south of Dewey Beach at 38767 Rehoboth Bay Sailing Association Lane. Dewey, Beach, DE 19971. Tel. 302-227-9008. Website? http://www.rbsa.org.
I think this is the perfect post for today. The weather is just gorgeous….sizzling hot, with blue skies. Definitely, a summer kind of a day. It was just like that when I went to visit RBSA on their Open House Saturday, some weeks ago. The weather was just incredible.
It has been so many years since I have stopped by. Close to 25 years ago my husband and I kept a small sailing boat at RBSA. We used the club for R & R. At times we would sit on their deck with friends. It really was very nice and I wanted to see if it had kept its charm. Surprise, surprised, it really had!!!
As I came in through their gravel road I came into view of the back of the club. There was plenty of parking and already sailors were getting ready for a beautiful sailing adventure on Rehoboth Bay. And I remembered how my kids enjoyed the sailing school long time ago.
And, a feeling of peacefulness came upon me. There is something about sailors and the aura that accompanies a sailing club. It is not noisy; just very laid back!!
I went upstairs where Steve and Dick were receiving prospective members. Got to meet them and they, basically, explained how the club works.
The views from the second floor of RBSA have never changed, if anything, they are prettier than ever.
Even though the club offers memberships, it is also open to the public. So, you can rent boats, and take lessons, as well.
The Junior Sailing School is for children ages 9 – 16 and is offered by reservation through August 16th on a weekly basis. Classes start each Monday and end of Friday, probably, with a barbecue. Registration starts at 9 a.m. every Monday; class ends at 11:45 a.m. One week of Junior Sailing is $10 for members and $220 for non-members. An advance class is also offered for $250 for 1 week. Please ask about the 10% discount per student for sailors enrolling together. Junior sailors must be able to complete a swim test. A 5% discount will be applied to early registration, provided payment is received no later than 2 weeks prior to the start of selected classes. Please call 302-227-9008 if you have any questions.
A combined adult/junior clinic is also offered Monday through Friday, by reservation from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on a daily drop-in basis. Please call for more info., or visit the website above mentioned.
Rehoboth Bay is one of the finest confined bodies of water on the East Coast for small boat sailing. RBSA offers just that and more…amazing sunsets, relaxing on the bay beach, or even eating crabs on their deck.
Hurricane Sandy took out their docks but everything has been repaired now.
Please visit http://www.rbsa.org, to find out all pertinent information, including a description of their fleet.
RBSA was founded in 1963 to foster sailing. Teaching is by cerfitied sailing instructors, with classroom and on-the-water instruction on how to sail small boats.
Summer at RBSA is full of events. Please visit http://www.rbsa.org/events.html. Even better, stop by while at the beach!!

First year for 4th of July Fireworks for Dewey Beach, Delaware and they outdid themselves.
Have a good One!!
July 4th, 2013
The post on AboutMyBeaches on Wednesday, July 3rd, will tell you what’s going on from Dover, Delaware, to Ocean City, Maryland…plenty of celebrations on this 4th of July. Some of them are easier to get to and out of than others. Rehoboth can be tricky because of the amount of visitors attending the Fireworks.
One square mile and about 100,000…Where do you park? How do you get in and out of Rehoboth Beach? My recommendation is that you get there super early and stay late. Enjoy the pre and post concerts by The Funsters at the Bandstand.
But, the Town of Rehoboth Beach recommends that you use one of the 2 shuttle bus services providing transportation to the fireworks, including the Kiwanis shuttle buses of the DART Park & Ride buses. Both lots are located on Highway 1, near County Bank. You will see plenty of signs directing you to the parking lots.
The Kiwanis lot will provide Dawson school buses from 5 p.m. to midnight for a flat fee of $10 per car.
DART Park & Ride lot opens at 7 a.m. DART will run buses until 2:30 a.m. for a fee of $8 per car which includes 4 bus passes. Cash buses are $1 per trip.
Starting at 6 p.m. today, 4th of July, vehicles will be detoured for the first 2 blocks of Rehoboth Avenue. Later on all major intersections will be closed to all vehicles. An exception will be made for emergency and handicapped.
Meters and parking permits are in full effect. You don’t want a ticket on the 4th, do you?
Even if you park in the DART or Kiwanis lot, you can ride either bus out of town. Buses will have priority leaving Downtown Rehoboth Beach.
The Jolly Trolley will run from 8 a.m. until 2 a.m., with a revised route from 6 p.m. until 11 p.m. The drop off and pick up is located behind Jack Lingo Realty Office on Christian at the Jolly Trolley uptown stop. More info? http://www.jollytrolley.com. Call 302-227-1197.
Have a Great 4th…wherever you choose to celebrate, even if it is at a friend’s house!
July 3rd, 2013
I am keeping my fingers crossed; the forecast for Southern Delaware is supposed to be good for the all the Fourth of July celebrations that will be taking place at the Delaware Beaches and Ocean City, Maryland.
I am ready. If you decided to venture to any of the celebrations, please get to the town early and plan on staying awhile. Do not rush to get out because you won’t be able to. It takes some time to maneuver the traffic jams.
So, with that said and done….Where Are The Parties?
DOVER – Delaware’s capital has a full schedule of events for the 4th of July, including at 2 p.m. the National Bell-Ringing Ceremony at The Old State House on The Green, joining bells ringing across America’s thirteen original colonies and featuring the reading of the Declaration of Independence!! You might as well enjoy the music. You and about 100,000 will enjoy a fantastic display on the beach. I might have to wait for Kevin Fleming, to put the photos on Facebook. The weather could play a role on all displays at the beaches, so, check it out.
Shuttle buses going into town will pick up visitors at Rt. 1 near County Bank and at the DART Park & Ride. Parking for the buses will be available at the grass lot next to County Bank. Charge for parking is $10 per car, with the proceeds split between the Kiwanis Club and Main Street.

Lewes, Delaware, is the perfect coastal town. It has historic charm, unique coastal flavor, unpretentious, laid-back, plenty of character….and a choice of playgrounds; the bay or the ocean. Shops and restaurants? You got it!!
When the other night, my friend, Debbie asked to go and watch a swim meet at the Lewes Yatch Club I immediately accepted. It was the end of the day. We hoped to enjoy a sunset, grab something to eat.
It was life in Lewes like any other night. This historic town is much loved and enjoyed by its residents…but just take a peek at the view…how could you not?
There were hundreds of kids, plenty of cheering and laughter, the University of Delaware research vessel was just coming home after a day out. And, Debbie and I had our chicken wraps.
Don’t forget to check the gardens that surround historic homes…..they are gorgeous!!
