dscn2116

Hey, it’s Spring…enjoy the weather and blame the groundhog!!

My poor flowers are so confused….to bloom or not to bloom.  It’s like we are going two steps forward and one step back.  What a tease this weather is!!

dscn2120

Well, Happy Hour is starting at Henlopen City Oyster House and when all fails stop for some delicious oysters and plenty more.  Location? 50 Wilmington Avenue in Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  Website?  http://www.hcoysterhouse.com Opens for lunch and dinner.

The Broadwater oysters from Virginia they were just right…salty!!  Shelley and I are still celebrating our birthdays…so we decided to stop by.  An order of the oysters, beet salad, and steamed shrimp with pickling spices hit the spot.

Nantucket’s, Fenwick Island, Restaurant, Review, American Cuisine, Full Bar, Delaware Beaches…Shelley turned 60! Crossing over to the Next Decade is Not Easy. With good Friends and the Perfect Restaurant….Doable!!

dscn1880

Yikes! I am not sure what she will say when she sees the heading of this post….well, I am sure I’ll hear about it.  I was going to take advantage of this milestone in her life to celebrate; at the same review Nantucket’s.  I had not been there in some time. And, we did close the restaurant…perfect for photo moments.

dscn1897

Nantucket’s is a restaurant that has a big following and has been located on Rt. 1 (Coastal Highway), Fenwick Island, Delaware for a long time. So close to Ocean City, Maryland too.  It is classic American cuisine, offering something for everyone; seafood, steaks, salads, sandwiches, and a full bar.  It’s a good place for a celebration!  Tel. 302-539-2607.  Website?  http://www.nantucketsrestaurant.com You can find them on Facebook, as well.  At present, they open Wednesday through Sunday.  That will change once the season gets under way.

There are several choices for dining:

At the Tap Room (bar) you will find comfortable high tables.  There are also a few regular tables, as well.  You may also eat at the bar.

dscn1879

dscn1878

This party of 2 dining room was very nice.

dscn1866

A main dining room, which is where we ate.

dscn1863

And, another cozy, smaller, and more intimate dining room.

dscn1864

Our celebrating party arrived on The Black Pearl.  This is a designated driver service; limo.  You can hire it by the hour in Ocean City, Delaware Beaches, Sussex and Kent counties.  Tel. 302-569-2273.

dscn1840

We met at the Tap Room and then proceeded to our table.  At first, our group was a little subdued.  Give them time…

dscn1844

There were some specials….I had to be fast with the camera.  My dining companions were going to dive into their dishes fast.

For an appetizer, I had the Crab & Artichoke Melt.  Five cheeses, sour cream, and tasty spices, golden and bubbly.  It was delicious and once it was on the table, others asked for a second order.

dscn1847

The bay scallops on puff pastry also were very well received.

dscn1846

The Soup?  Well, this is Nantucket’s Signature Soup; the Quahog & Scallop Chowdah.  It is so good that they can ship it anywhere in the U.S.

dscn1849

I was torn between the N.Y. Strip Steak and the lamb.  I went with the lamb and so did others.  It was delicious; juicy, medium rare…great!

dscn1852

Someone did order the Black Angus N.Y. Strip.  16 ounce cut from the center of the loin.  No well done allowed!!  It did look beautiful.

dscn1862

The veal scallopini was also ordered.  Tasty and delicious.

dscn1861

Encrusted Fillet Mignon was grilled to the customer’s liking and encrusted with Nantucket’s bleu cheese herb mix.  Served over a black raspberry cabernet demi-glace.

dscn1857

Mike ordered the Jumbo Crab Cakes – Maryland lump crabmeat with their blend of seasonings and their garlic caper remoulade.  The perfect coastal dish.

dscn1856

When Michael ordered the Lobster Shepherds Pie, I was not sure what to expect.  Well, he got two 5 ounce Canadian tails, sauteed with wild mushrooms, fresh spinach and a splash of  Chardonnay.

dscn1859

I loved the way Susan’s dish looked.  It was Pan Roasted Breast of Duckling.   Pan seared and finished with wild dried cherries in a port wine sauce.

dscn1860

More drinks, coffee, and then time to eat the cheesecake!!

dscn1871

By this time, we were getting a little louder and there was nobody else around us.  Hanky Panky lingerie….

dscn1872

And even more laughs…the cousin obliged.

dscn1877

Susan….did too!!!

dscn1875

And, her Mother decided to act her age!!

dscn1876

And, just as we came in…..we left again in The Black Pearl!!

dscn1891

dscn1894

Note:  Thanks to Nantucket’s for taking good care of us as Shelley crossed over to the next decade!!

“An American Tapestry”, Songs Reflecting the Music in 20th Century America, The Delaware Choral Society, Spring Concert, Friday, April 12th, 7:00 p.m., Venue? Sanctuary at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 631 South State St., Dover, Delaware

DCS_Spring_2013_Concert-An_American_Tapestry

The Delaware Choral Society was founded in Dover, Delaware (our state’s capital), in 1957 by a group of church choirs wanting to perform Handel’s Messiah.  Branching out to other choral music of the great composers; from the Renaissance to the present, renditions of spiritual and folk music.  The Society is open to every interested singer without audition.  More info?  Please visit http://www.delawarechoralsociety.org.

Join the Delaware Choral Society, under the direction of Dr. James Wilson, for their spring concert presentation featuring a compilation of 20th Century American music, including songs by Leonard Bernstein, Smauel  Barber, Randall Thompson, and many more!!

Program Highlight:  “Have Ye Not Known”? and “Ye Shall Have a Song” from Randall Thompson’s The Peaceable Kingdon.

Randall Thompson is recognized as one of the finest composers of American choral music for major works, which often incorporated jazz, folk music, and American text into an eclectic body of music, which also included orchestra and piano works, operas, and chamber music.  The Peaceable Kingdom was commissioned in 1936 by the League of Composers for the Harvard Glee Club and the Radcliffe Choral Society, and it was inspired by a painting of the same by the naturalist Edward Hicks entitled the “Preaching Quaker of Pennsylvania”.  The painting depicts Isaiah, Chapter XI, verses 6-9.  In Thompson’s work, the selected verses are proclaimed by the chorus and their meaning sets the stage for a variety of choral techniques:  opposing choruses expressing the contrast between blessings bestowed on the righteous and woes inflicted upon the wicked, soprano and bass lines mirroring each other (one moves up in pitch as the other moves down and vice versa), and double choruses whose fullness of parts embody overwhelming joy and gladness of heart.

Friday, April 12th, one single performance, at 7:00 p.m.  The concert will be hosted in the sanctuary of Holy Cross Catholic Church located at 631 South State St., Dover, DE 19901.

Tickets:

General Admission – $20.00

Seniors, 65 years of age and over – $15.00

Modern Mixture, Downtown Rehoboth Beach, Restaurant, Review, Delaware Beaches…What’s Cooking Leo? Roady’s Cinco de Mayo 5K Run/Walk, Delaware Tech, Jack F. Owens Campus, Saturday, May 4, 2013, Post Race Fiesta, Margaritas, Prizes, Fun, Music

dscn6164

Had to go and check what Leo was cooking at Modern Mixture.  He has been posting eye catching soups and salads on Facebook. It is that time of the year, as Leo said, when we want something a little lighter.  Everyone is trying to get in shape for the warmer months, if they ever get here.

Jody and I stopped by and we noticed more tables, more art, an extra bathroom, and the ever smiling Leo…cooking and talking to customers explaining the dishes of the day; a little cayenne here or a jalapeno there.

dscn2033

Modern Mixture is located at 62A Rehoboth Avenue in Downtown Rehoboth Beach, on the ocean block.  They open every day at 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  Great coffee, as well.  Tel. 302-227-0600.  Website? http://www.modern-mixture.com.  You can also find Modern Mixture on Facebook.

Leo is the type of chef that even though he has a set menu; he is not afraid to improvise to give customers what they want.  Any allergy issues?  He is happy to help you with that, as well.

His cuisine is a fusion of Latin, Mediterranean, and American.  His homemade tamales are to die for.  If that is what you have in mind, call him up to make sure he has them on that particular day.

I decided to go with Leo’s suggestions, because he said they were summer body ready dishes…haha.

A smoothie of kale, pineapple, and just about 2 ounces or so of cherry juice was going to be my drink.  So good and refreshing…just 3 ingredients.

dscn2027

Okay…his Lentil Soup was a large bowl.  It was made with a reduction of black beans and portabella mushrooms.  Truly delicious; well season and light.  It really was.

dscn2030

Leo called this salad his “Cool Summer Body Chopped Salad”.  It is not even on the menu yet.  Very chopped lettuce, then a mango salad of mango, red pepper, cucumber, onion, scallions, sea salt, and cayenne pepper.  The dressing was so light and refreshing….only lime juice and cayenne pepper!!

dscn2032

Modern Mixture will be at Roady’s Cinco de Mayo 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, May 4th at 9 a.m. Rain or Shine!  Registration begins at 8 a.m. with the race starting at 9 a.m.  This race and event production is presented by Seashore Striders.

It will be at the Delaware Tech, Jack F. Owens Campus, Student Services Center Pavillion in Georgetown, Delaware.

Edie Bees, Confection Shop, Historic Lewes, Delaware, Is Open for Business!! Chocolates, Candies…Yum!! What a treat at the Delaware Beaches!

dscn2024

We felt like kids in a candy store…that’s exactly where we were.  Debbie, Jody, and I decided to visit Edie Bees on its opening day….yes, this charming confection shop opened today at 115 Second Street in Historic Lewes. Sweet temptations for all of us and another excuse to stroll and shop in Lewes.

dscn1970

Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day and Easter, the colors were amazing.  As you entered the shop an impressive rock candy arrangement greeted you.  Gorgeous!!  Taking the store in, all you can say is that it really is pretty.

dscn2008

Candy stores are happy places; you should have seen the smiles on people’s faces as they were coming to check the new kid in town.  The centerpiece was this huge chocolate Bunny surrounded by the best of the season.

dscn1982dscn1989dscn1988dscn1987

Chocolates by DeBrand, chocolatiers from Fort Wayne, Indiana.  The company was founded in 1987.

dscn1995

The lucky customers got to sample some of the delicious chocolates today.

dscn1996

Also, by DeBrand, these caught my attention.  They were called Faces of the World…our diverse world in chocolates!

dscn1993dscn1994

Some of the candy brought a bit of nostalgia in us.  Other candy…well, we couldn’t wait to try some.  All candy is in glass containers, very visible.  And, very color coordinated.

dscn1978dscn1977

dscn1971dscn1973

Some interesting flavors…

dscn1992dscn1991

These particular ones…well, they made my mouth water.

dscn2012dscn2003

Tempting right?  You bet!!  What are you waiting for?  Have a good one!

Dining, Perucci’s, Millville, Delaware, Italian Cuisine, Restaurant, Review, Gluten Free Choices, Open Every Day for Dinner, Southern Delaware

dscn1944

“A good friend is a connection to life, a tie to the past, a road to the future, the key to sanity in a totally insane world.”   loise wyse

And that’s how my evening started, with good friends….our choice of restaurant?  Perucci’s located at 33507 Atlantic Avenue, Millville, Delaware.  Millville is located a couple of miles west of Bethany Beach.  It is a breeze to get there at this time of the year.  During the season, it might take you a bit longer.  Rt. 26 can get busy.  Tel. 302-829-8727.  Make reservations; Perucci’s is not big; it is popular.  Website?  http://www.peruccis.com.

dscn1946dscn1967

This is a very charming old building.   It has been been the Millville Post Office in the past and it has also been a gas station, if I remember correctly.

I have been passing the restaurant for some time.  I never thought my husband could eat there.  Having to eat gluten free…Italian restaurants can be a little tricky.  But at Perucci’s you can substitute gluten free pasta and dishes that are gluten free, are labeled as such.  Jim, the owner confirmed it.  So, if you have to eat gluten free, don’t be scared….they will be able to take care of you.

It was packed when we arrived, but by the time we finished, we had Perucci’s all to ourselves.  It was the perfect time to take pictures.

dscn1947

Tracy was our server.  She was right on target with her suggestions.

We started with a Pizza Margherita, Sunday sauce, mozzarella cheese, and fresh basil.  It was thin and crispy.  Perfect!!

dscn1952

How could we not have calamari?  Of course we ordered the Calamari Fritto, flash fried, pepperoncini, chipolte cocktail sauce, citrus aioli, and spicy chili aioli.   Light, with sauces that made your taste buds do a little dance.

dscn1954

A few of the house salads were ordered…Insalata della Perucci which consisted of organic baby greens, tomatoes, Pecorino, and sherry vinaigrette.

I ordered the Eggplant Parmigiano over linguine…eggplant, mozzarella cheese and a choice of sauces: creamy pesto, Alfredo, Vodka or Sunday sauce.  I chose the Sunday sauce and it really looked and tasted amazing with the eggplant perfectly cooked…..guess what?  I was talking so much I forgot to take the picture.  Take my word…it was very good.

One of my friends ordered just meatballs.  She was perfectly happy with a salad and meatballs for dinner.  She did not forget the Sunday sauce either.

dscn1960

Another friend’s dinner choice was the Scaloppini al Marsala.  She chose the chicken, with a Marsala mushroom sauce.  She ordered it over Gluten Free pasta.

dscn1958

Another of the same was ordered but regular pasta was chosen…..see the difference?  One is curly….taste the difference?  Could not taste a difference!!

dscn1959

We were perfectly satisfied but when Tracy mentioned desserts….well those sweet endings were hard to resist.  We decided on the Tiramisu, which was all homemade…wonderful light and we shared it.  Beautiful layers!!

dscn1964dscn1965

Perucci’s is cozy inside.  An intimate setting.  Even though the tables are near to each other, we felt very comfortable talking and feeling right at home.

dscn1966

The Board

The Board

We thoroughly enjoyed our evening.  Everyone was friendly and the service was prompt.  Perucci’s has specials throughout the week.  Check out the above mentioned website.

I will certainly go back….too many dishes to still try, including the gluten free ones.

Having dinner with a group of friends is and will always be priceless!

Have a good one!!
