Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, Lost & Found Office, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Chili Too…..Many Thanks!!

dscn1219

I guess I had to have that last hamburger before heading back home to Delaware.  I arrived at Ft. Lauderdale Airport with plenty of time, so I relaxed and kicked back at Chili’s Too at Terminal 3, just next to Air Tran.

I had taken out my Kindle when my food arrived.  I just had a plain hamburger, cheese and fries.  I finished, paid and went on to walk around for some time.  Never even thought about the Kindle.

Arriving home I was checking my bag when I suddenly realized the Kindle was not there.  In my household they said; forget it…gone!!  How could I have done that?

Two emails arrived.  They were in the computer for a few hours already.  One was from Jessica, who was the Customer Service Representative at the Lost and Found Office.  They believed they had an item that belonged to me.  To contact them at 954-359-2247.  It was late in the evening so I sent an email telling that they did have an item that belonged to me.

I also got an email from Amazon, as well.

You see, when you think there is no honesty and goodness in this world, someone does the right thing.

If this ever happen to you at the Ft. Lauderdale Airport, the Lost and Found is located in Terminal 1 of the airport on the Arrivals Level.  If they contact you by e-mail they will give you an item number.  They only hold items for 30 days.

There are a few options for retrieval:

1.  Self Pick-up.

2.  Friend/Relative Pick-up.  They will need a letter from you granting them permission to release your item to another individual other than yourself.  You can send them an e-mail to airportlf@broward.org, or fax them the information at 954-359-6290.  Use your item number as the subject.  Photo identification and the item number are required for pick up.

3. UPS:  This is what I chose.  You must arrange shipping on your own, at your expense.  The phone number for the UPS store that will go to the airport to collect the item is 954-923-9004.  UPS will require the item number in order to retrieve your item.  Keep this number because it is for the only UPS store that will go to the Ft. Lauderdale airport to pick up your item.

4.  Regular Mail:  Send them a self addressed prepaid package.  The package must be large enough for the item and a metered stamp must be used for any items weighing more than 4 ounces.  You can address the item as follows:

ATTN:  Lost & Found, 2200 SW 45 Street, Suite 101, Dania Beach, FL 33312

The Lost and Found office is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. until noon.  Then, from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m.  They are closed on Broward County holidays.

Again, thanks so much for your consideration.  And, to Chili’s Too, my sincere thanks, as well.

Have a good one!!

Stiltsville, North Biscayne Bay, Biscayne National Park, “Shacks on Stilts”, Stiltsville Trust, Key Biscayne, Miami, South Florida…Tours on March 30th and April 13th

100_4619

N’or easters, blizzards, tornados, the Pope is retiring….the news of the day.  I just hope the groundhog was right when it showed that we would have an early spring!!  Time will tell.

100_4630

Some time ago my friend, Scott, took Shelley and I, on a trip that was so unexpected and beautiful.  We went to see Stiltsville, located on North Biscayne Bay in South Florida.  You don’t hear too much about these shacks on stilts.  Well, you need to be on a boat to get to them.  I think you could say that the inhabitants of these shacks were the original squatters of those times.

Please note that there are only a few tours available to see these striking and desolate structures….coming up tours on March 30th and April 13th.  Please visit http://www.historymiami.org/tours.  Once you open the site, click on Boat Tours and you will find all the pertinent information.  Boats depart from Bayside Marketplace, 401 Biscayne Blvd., an outdoor mall next to the American Airlines Arena.  You can also call them at 305-375-1621 if you have other questions.  I just did and they are very friendly.  Just remember that reservations and payment need to be done ahead of time.  This company also has plenty of tours available, if you are visiting Miami.

100_4639

They say that the first “shack” was built around 1930s, but some of the historians say that the “shacks in the flats” were there as early as 1922.

100_4634

Here, at the Delaware Beaches we build plenty of houses on stilts.  But, these houses take building on stilts to a different level.  The houses are situated one mile south of Cape Florida on sand banks.   They stand on wood or reinforced concrete pilings.  In 1960 there were 27 shacks.  At present, only 7 remain.  In 1985, the bottom land on which the shacks rest was deeded by the State of Florida to the Federal Government as part of Biscayne National Park.  The Stiltsville Trust of 2003 raises funds, which goal is to preserve and rehabilitate the structures to help showcase the Park’s marine resources.  More info?  Please visit http://www.stiltsville.org.

100_4636

Back in the 1940s and 1950…lawyers, bankers, politicians, the affluent and the well connected came to drink, relax and kick back.

100_4637

“Crawfish” Eddie Walker?  He was one of the first to build a shack on stilts above water, toward the end of the prohibition era.  It was perfect for gambling since it was legal at one mile offshore.  He sold bait, beer and was known for a dish called chilau; a crawfish chowder.  His original shack was destroyed by a hurricane in 1950.

Jimmy Ellenburg also had a shack in the flats.  He was known as the unofficial mayor of Stiltsville.  This one is still standing.

100_4640

The one called the Leshaw House was featured in a national ad campaign for Pittsburg Paints.

100_4633

Stiltsville has been secured, and no trespassing signs have been posted.  By permission only, you can gain access to them.  You can call the park’s superintendent at 305-230-1833 for more info.  And if you could like details on the progress of the Stiltsville Trust, then please call 305-443-2266, or visit the above mentioned website.

Have a great day!!

Note:  Info. for this post was taken from Stiltsville-Biscayne National Park and from Wikipedia.

Having lived at the Delaware Beaches for so many years, visiting the local museums, where you can unlock the past so that you can see where we are going, is a must if you are visiting or living, here at the beach.  I know, I know, the beach, restaurants, and shops are probably what you are coming to the beach for…these museums will not take a long time.  You never know, you might be retiring to the Delaware Beaches; low property taxes and tax free shopping!!!

The Rehoboth Beach Historical Society’s mission is “to preserve and showcase artifacts that illustrate the development of our beautiful city by the sea”.

coastartillerycorps

Until March 17h, the exhibit currently on display is “WWII:  Rehoboth Beach” – In Rehoboth there were Coast Guardsmen on horseback, a Civil Air Patrol airfield…the Civil Air Patrol pilots kept our waters safe from the enemy.  There were also blackouts and stage door canteens.  You can view at the Museum the artifacts that help tell the story of a beach town during the war.  A 1940’s kitchen, listen to the music of the Mills Brothers and the Tommy Dorsey Band.  Children visiting the Museum can learn how to send a Morse Code.  And you can grab a recipe for creamed chipped beef on toast!!

Clear_Space_Performers_Press (1)

Thursday, February 14th – Valentine’s Day Stage Door Canteen, a Valentine’s Day Musical Revue.  The response has been overwhelming, so, instead of holding it at the Rehoboth Museum, it has been moved to Clear Space Theatre located at 20 Baltimore Avenue in downtown Rehoboth Beach,   It will start at 7:00 p.m.  Tickets are $14 (cash or check only for that night) in honor of the holiday and light refreshments will be served.  A cash bar will be available, as well.  Please call 302-227-7310 to reserve your seat.

This performance concurs with the WWII exhibit on display at the Rehoboth Museum.  Clear Space, http://www.clearspacetheatre.org, will take the audience on a sentimental journey to another era with a presentation of popular wartime songs; Chattanooga Choo-Choo, You’ll Never Know, and I’ll Be Seeing You.

Stage Canteens were special clubs and the guests were the steady stream of GIs headed off to war.  Many were leaving home for the first time and the Canteens offered a welcome opportunity to forget their anxieties, if only for a time, with entertainment, fellowship and a little American spirit.

Top_Secret_Rosies

Friday, March 8th – Documentary, “Top Secret Rosies”, in honor of Women’s History Month in March, at the Rehoboth Beach Museum located at 511 Rehoboth Avenue, by the roundabout.  The documentary will start at 7:00 p.m. in the museum’s Cooper Gallery.  Please note that reservations are required for this event, since the space is limited.  All you have to do is call 302-227-7310 and make the reservation.  Light refreshments will be served.  Free for members of the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society and $5 donation from non-members.

The film was produced and directed by Leann Erickson.  The film explores, with four of the “Top Secret Rosies” the importance of their role in the Allied successes.  The 4 vastly different women share what it was like as a human computer and how they sometimes worked night, day and night again.  It was up to these women to make sure those in the air and on the battle grounds received the accurate calculations needed to achieve success in hitting their targets.

Have a great day!!  Talk to you later.

Perfect night for Stonegrilling at Dos Locos, Restaurant, Rehoboth Beach, Gluten Free Menu, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

Once again the Delaware Beaches get a break from all the crazy weather going around us.  Just rain and wind here…a classic n’or easter!!

Love going to Dos Locos, located at 208 Rehoboth Avenue in Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  Tel. 302-227-3353.  Website?  http://www.doslocos.com. Lots of times we happen to go on a Thursday.  They have their stonegrilling specials on that night.  It is a full serving.  Dos Locos also has a full bar.  It is comfortable, casual, and very reasonable.  And, they open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner.

They do have an extensive menu.  Besides the stonegrills, they also have fajitas, tacos, enchiladas, burritos, etc. etc.  Great desserts, as well.

We went with friends and nothing is better than sharing a meal with those who make you laugh.  These 2 are those types of friends.  Our meals are always a happy time.

One of them started with a frozen Margarita.  I think she always requests it.  Not from a mix; the real deal.

dscn1170

Alex, our server, he knows us well.  And, he takes good care of us.  Always offering suggestions that are on target.

Grilling on a hot stone, is dry cooking.  It sears and locks the flavors and juices of whatever you are cooking.  When the stone arrives at your table, it is over 700 degrees.  So, watch out if you have children around you.  It will stay hot for the longest time.  The food is never burned and only rubs and condiments are used; served on the side.

On this particular night one of our friends decided to try the lobster.  It was a very good size and it did look beautiful.  Besides the rubs, she ordered melted butter.  Of course!!

dscn1174

Another friend decided on lobster and filet…he loved it!

dscn1173

My husband decided on the scallops.  Cooking them on the stone is great.

dscn1172

I only wanted their hot, shredded duck tacos; hard shell.  I do love those!!

dscn1176

And, I have to thank Alex for bringing that decadent dessert to our table.  It was a molten chocolate cake; dense, warm, and full of flavor….ice cream and whipped cream!! Nice.

dscn1178

Please note that Dos Locos offers Gluten Free Menus!  Also, please check their website, above mentioned….they are ready for Mardi Gras and Ash Wednesday.  They also have a Friday Lenten Menu.

Have a good week-end!!  Talk to you later.

Please make sure to stop by P.U.P.S.  The store is a popular place for humans and their best friend.  It is not only for dogs.  Cats are not forgotten; they are best friends of many.

dscn0979

They day I stopped by I finally got to meet Leslie.  It was great to see her interaction with her customers that seemed to know the store so well.

The customers came with their dogs and they were so funny.  This puppy was just adorable.  I think his name was Kalo.

dscn0978

These other ones were getting to know each other.

dscn1002

The store has leashes, treats, bath essentials….and something for the human in the pet’s life.

Talia’s Tuscan Table, Deli, Pizza, Pasta, Catering, Dine In, Take Out, Restaurant, Review, Boca Raton, Florida…Nice!

dscn1360

Did I forget to say, that everything is homemade?  The mozzarella, the ciabatta bread, and cannoli.  The prices are so reasonable, the friendly atmosphere, smiles, and music are free!!

dscn1351

Word of mouth…don’t you love it?  Andrew took Brenda, who back in October told me.  Now I am passing the word on to you.  Plenty of places to eat in South Florida.  Everyone knows that.  Some of them, stand out. And, this is one of them.

Talia’s Tuscan Table is located at 4070 N. Dixie Hwy., Boca Raton, Florida.  Tel. 561-362-0874.  Website?  http://www.taliastable.com.  You can also check it on Facebook, where you can see other commentaries and check what specials they are offering.  Talia’s opens at 11:30 a.m. until 8:30 p.m.  Closed on Sundays.

dscn1349

I drove south from Delray on Federal Highway, took a right on Spanish River and then a right on Dixie.  The restaurant is in a small strip shopping center, right as you make the right turn. You cannot miss it.

dscn1357

Like I was saying…the music was playing and you could tell the customers were regulars; the usual suspects.  I decided to talk to some of them and you could tell they meant it when they said the food was delicious.

dscn1344

Frankie said…have a menu, you don’t have to look at the walls.  There were menus on the walls.  Frankie is a part owner, Danny is the other owner.

dscn1354

I asked Frankie…if this is a customer’s first time…what would you recommend?  What would be the dish that will hook you?  No hesitation there.  The Bronx Bomber and the Michelanglo he said.  Bring it on, that’s what I want, I said.

Talia’s is a restaurant that is very casual, you can dine in, sit on either table outside, or take out, like I did.

The music got a little louder and Frankie was smiling…Nice!

OMG, a sandwich was coming out of the kitchen.  It was called the Galileo Cheese Steak with roast beef, cheddar, onion, lettuce, tomato and Russian dressing.  If mine were that huge I was going to be in trouble.  Calories out the window, for sure.

dscn1358

Have some bread, Frankie said as he place a place full of garlic ciabatta bread with a wonderful smell and so warm.

dscn1352

How about some mozzarella?  They make their own.  Put it on the bread.  I obliged.

dscn1346

dscn1353

Next sandwich coming out of the kitchen was the Fermi.  Portabella, roasted peppers, tuscan beans and organic lettuce.  It was the only sandwich on the menu that said it contained 195 calories.  I was not counting calories, that’s for sure.

dscn1345

The customers let me take the pictures.  You could tell they really loved Talia’s.  Some of them were known by their first names.

A Citrus Seafood Salad came out of the kitchen…looked very nice!!

dscn1359

Frankie said…do you like cannolis….is the Pope Catholic?  Two cannolis to go on the house.  Drink on the house, as well.

dscn1374

My bag carrying the sandwiches was heavy with 2 hefty sandwiches.  They said “adios” and off I went.

Each of the sandwiches could have, definitely, fed 2 people.  They were truly amazing.  Here is what they were:

The Michelanglo with herb chicken cutlet, eggplant, mozzarella and roasted peppers.  The chicken cutlet was thin and perfectly breaded, a perfect pair to the rest of the ingredients.

dscn1363

dscn1364

Frankie had asked me if I liked hot peppers….bring it on.  The next one was the Bronx Bomber.  This one had salami, capicolla, mortadella, ham, provolone and hot peppers.  Another winner!!  Very very Nice!!

dscn1369

dscn1372

Please note that wine and beer are available at Talia’s.

Thanks to Frankie for his suggestions and to Brenda for showing me the way.

Have a good one!!
