August 19th, 2011
Are you thinking….there she comes again!! Oh, well. You know what happens? When it hits you or your family, then you spring into action, just like anything else.
I got an e-mail from Sharon who every year visits the Delaware Beaches. The difference this year is that she has been diagnosed with celiac disease. No gluten (wheat flour or its derivatives); so….how about Grotto Pizza, a favorite of hers? She read my post on Grotto’s new addition to their menu. You got it, Gluten Free Pizza!!
I don’t know Sharon but I know that brought a smile to her face. She wanted to know more. I sent her a not so short e-mail with additional information on our restaurants that are sensitive to the customers with food allergies and intolerances.
I know how hard it is to go to a restaurant and at the mention of the word “gluten free”, the glaze clouds the eyes of a waiter. It just happened to me this week. It is not her or his fault. On this day and age, as celiac disease is at the forefront of food allergies, restaurants need to inform their staff about this and other food allergies and intolerances because there is a difference, and it is important.
“A true food allergy causes an immune system reaction that affects numerous organs in the body.” It can be severe or life-threatening. An intolerance or sensitivity is less serious. It is limited to digestive problems.
It is evident that eating out is getting easier when you have a food allergy. I have seen the improvement.
The response of some restaurants varies. Not on purpose. There is a lot of ignorance and there is also the chef that has a concept of his dish in a specific way. To change it would completely ruin his masterpiece.
Two restaurants that are rising above the rest, here at the Delaware Beaches, are Big Fish Grill and Bethany Blues. These two restaurants, by far, are the best I have encountered, anywhere, regarding their handling of customers with food allergies. Kudos to them!!
Big Fish Grill
I am a habitual customer of this popular restaurant in Rehoboth Beach. There is always a line but I have a tip for you. If you go through the entrance of the Tiki Bar, you can grab a high top or sit at the bar without the assistant of a hostess. The service is just as good there. I, actually, prefer it.
I questioned if the crabcakes had any fillers. She said “just a little bit for binding”. Oh, it is just that my husband has a gluten allergy. I left it like that. I turned around and the Manager was there wondering who had the gluten allergy. Only the Manager at Big Fish will come and talk to you about an allergy.
After the food is prepared, she will inspect the dish; then the food will be brought to the table by him or her.
Big Fish is located at 20298 Coastal Highway, Rehoboth Beach. Tel. 302-227-FISH. Website? www.bigfishgrill.com.
When visiting the website you can click on Menu. On the right hand side you will see all the menus available for each allergy. Dairy Free, Egg Free, Garlic Free, Gluten Free, Nut Free, Shellfish Free.
On that evening, just sitting at the bar, my husband enjoyed, worryfree, a Thai Wrap and some gorgeous shrimp.
I usually order their House Salad, which has wild greens with tomato, gorgonzola, walnuts and maple walnut vinaigrette. Then, I have them top it with their caramelized Atlantic Salmon. It is delicious. I can’t get enough of it.
Bethany Blues
This restaurant and music venue takes its customers with food related allergies very seriously, as well.
Bethany Blues is located at 18385 Coastal Highway, Lewes, and in Bethany Beach you can find them at 6 North Pennsylvania Avenue. In their website, www.bethanyblues.com you can click under Menu, then click under Allergy Concerns. You will get plenty of info. there.
Again, at Bethany Blues, the Manager will come and talk to you about your food related allergy.
Bethany Blues, I am coming back; just waiting for the Second Season at the Beaches, which is fast approaching.
Even though there plenty of other restaurants that can accommodate you at the Delaware Beaches, these 2 really do stand out.
Let me know what you think…talk to you later…

It has not been even a month since I wrote about the Cape May-Lewes Ferry. I could never get tired of that view. Relaxing, peaceful and serene.
There is a tall ship anchored, which adds to a most spectacular and unique site. I went to check it out.
Its name is the Kalmar Nyckel. It is also Delaware’s official tall ship Ambassador. It is a recreation of the first colonial Swedish ship to arrive in America at what is now, Wilmington, Delaware.
Some of its dimensions are:
Full rigged ship, 141′, 168 gross tons. It is owned by the Kalmar Nychel Foundation. It is one of America’s pioneering colonial ships. For more information you can visit www.KalmarNyckel.org.
The tall ship will be in Lewes through the first week in September. You can sail the tall ship or you can also have a pirate sail, as well. For full schedule and rates either visit the website above mentioned or, call 302-429-7447.
On Sunday, 8/28, there will be free dock tours from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
The Cape May Lewes Ferry Terminal is located at 43 Cape Henlopen Drive, Lewes. Transportation from the Terminal can be done by bus, trolley or bikes. For schedules, please visit http://www.capemaylewesferry.com/schedules-fares.
I decided that I was hungry. On the Rocks Bar & Grill was on my mind. The hamburgers? They say they are the best. So, why not?
I met Ken who works along with his wife and a few others at On The Rocks. I ordered a plain hamburger. I wanted to get the full effect of this American favorite.
I asked Ken. What makes it so special? His answer was that their supplier is excellent…then right before we cook it we….oh, sorry, it’s a secret. What? You are leaving me hanging with suspense, Ken.
It arrived as I was getting into some of that Calypso/Jimmy Buffet music. It was 1/2 lb. beef, moist, perfectly cooked, and delicious. Just like I had been told. I had an iced tea. I was lucky too. There was a special; Tuesdays it is $8.00 for the hambuger and tea. In the evening it is music on the deck.
Thursday is Bucket of Crabs, a draft beer or a soda for $16. To check out their menu, specials, events, and entertainment, please visit www.ontherocksde.com.
I was surprised by the arrival of Peggy Mitchell. She is the Manager of Food & Retail-Lewes Delaware River & Bay Authority. She thanked me for the the last post. She loves her job. You can tell. She has a passion for it; does not feel like a job, at all.
Peggy told me that they have hosted 6 weddings this year with 2 other ones in September. Other events are also held at this beautiful spot. More info? Please visit http://www.capemaylewesferry.com/book-an-event.
She also told me that this spot is the best kept secret. Some locals do not want it divulged. Sorry, that has been taken care of already.
Did I tell you how friendly everyone has been?
Have a good one!! Talk to you later.
And, there she went again; always on time…
August 15th, 2011
Even before summer started someone mentioned this restaurant to me. It has taken this long to make it there. And it might…..
I tell you what. Lately I have just been getting less than memorable food. It just has been mediocre. I want food that will energize my taste buds and I want restaurants to make me feel as if I could not wait to go back.
So, I really should get back to my cooking. Maybe that will get me to appreciate going out to eat more.
Port is located at 1205 Highway One, Dewey Beach. The Tel. is 302-227-0669. Website? www.portdewey.com. Lunch is served Fridays through Sundays from 12 until 4 p.m. This location used to be the home of The Dewey Beach Club.
They have done some remodeling. A fish tank separates the dining area from the bar.
It was a little loud and not very relaxing since the wait staff kept rushing back and forth.
I ordered The King’s Salad. I think it was supposed to have had apples, but they were missing. Cranberries and mixed greens. I told our waitress to hold the sugar coated walnuts. Blue cheese crumbles and a house raspberry vinaigrette. Once it was cut and mixed, it was actually, pretty good.
For my entree I ordered Rockfish, blackened. I chose the mashed potatoes and different squashes were also included. It was good; but not exciting. I ate it. Don’t kid yourselves. That did not deter me.
My husband ordered the Pad-Thai. Stir fried rice noodles, shrimp, chicken and vegetables with authentic Thai seasonings; garnished with cilantro, bean sprouts and chopped peanuts.
His review was that it was too sweet. It had chicken and shrimp and maybe it should have been one or the other; not both. Not spicy enough, either. I thought he would start his tantrum, but he contained himself.
So, we quickly got our bill, which was somewhat reasonable, and departed.
Note: Port is supposed to have a Thai influence but there are only a few Thai dishes.
Not very exciting, don’t you think? Talk to you later…..
August 15th, 2011
This a post that is to the point; short and sweet. I mentioned that as I was enjoying the art and craft show at the League in Henlopen Acres, my car was being ticketed. Upset, indeed I was.
I visited this morning with the League’s Executive Director, Sheila Bravo. We definitely had a nice conversation. The parking in Henlopen Acres is definitely a problem when an event such as this one is being held. Ms. Bravo did not know that people were parking on that road, therefore, nobody was there to tell visitors not to park on the street.
The sign? It was put afterwards by a neighbor that was feeling sorry for people getting tickets. Mind you that there were a lot of tickets given on that day.
The Rehoboth Art League is meeting today with the appropriate personnel in order for this not to happen again.
The Town of Henlopen was very gracious and professional and no since no signs were posted on that street before I parked, my ticket was voided.
So, thanks to both of you!!
Have a great day!! Talk to you later…

I felt like it was a scene from storm chasers. Going north from the Delaware Beaches, to Philadelphia, to be exact, caught us in a mess of traffic, rain, and threatening clouds. I said to Michael; do you want to stop at the Smyrna Diner? They have scrapple. Did I have to ask?
I was looking for the same diner that years ago I had visited. I knew they had a scrapple sub. Hmm; where the heck were they? I missed the new Smyrna Diner. Not because it was small, but probably because I did not expect to see a very modern looking building with a large Diner sign in front of it. I immediately, got skeptical.
The Smyrna Diner is located at 99 South Cory Lane. If you are traveling north or south on Rt. 1, then get off on Exit 114. The diner will be off of Rt. 13 North. You can check their website, www.smyrnadiner.com. If you did not know the old diner, there is a picture of it in the website.
As you come in, you can still feel the diner atmosphere, but, definitely the place is totally different. It is a large restaurant.
Michael ordered a scrapple sandwich with eggs and cheese on a hard roll. That’s how they serve a scrapple sandwich. Maybe I imagined that it was a huge sub roll.
I ordered, with a straight face, chicken fried steak, which I was told had country fries, bread, eggs (any style), and gravy. Our waitress looked at me a little skeptical but, no, I held my own and told her that’s what I wanted.
I was not about to order a white egg omelette; hold everything that is good and tasty. For crying out loud, I was in a diner.
Michael reassured me and told me not to feel guilty. That it did not look that big. Okay.
It is now late in the evening as I write this post, and I am so guilty….I am not getting on that scale for anything in the world. I would probably have a total depression. I think tomorrow might be a good day to visit the new gym and sign up for some zumba classes. That’s an idea!!
By the way, the food? Let’s say I had higher expectations….
I will let you know how it goes…talk to you later….
August 13th, 2011
The Rehoboth Art League and its location is the perfect setting for an outdoor art and craft. This week-end and next week-end is the Rehoboth Art Leagues’s 38th Annual Outdoor fine Art & Craft Show in Rehoboth.
My friend, Gayle, and made our appearance early. It was so nice walking throught it all. We picked our favorite exhibitors and we also wished they would have had more crafts. The art show is bursting with paintings; more so than crafts.
These were some of my favorite exhibitors:
Anita Peghini-Raber – She has made Rehoboth Beach her home. Naturalistic Expressionism. You can visit her website www.rehobothart.com and see what she is all about.
Another exhibitor that caught my attention was the jewelry made by Astrid Peterson. She had some unique designs with semi precious stones. I noticed how she worked with her customers; friendly, taking time to explain the stones and the process of jewelry making. Her website? www.astridpetersonjewelry.com.
We decided to get some iced tea at The Point Coffee House, which had its owns special corner, serving some delicious and tempting goodies. Their website is www.thepointcoffee.com. Can’t wait to visit them in Rehoboth Beach.
A potter was immersed in his craft with an audience of young children.
We came across The Happyrock Pottery. The potter is Susan Gladstone. Her studio is at Celebration Mall, 20 Baltimore Ave., Rehoboth Beach. You can e-mail Susan at thehappyrock@earthlink.net.
Gayle and I were so impressed with her work. Her colors were gorgeous and the pottery was just the right size. Her prices were very reasonable, as well.
This art and craft show will be held on Sunday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Next week-end, 8/20 and 8/21 the schedule will be as follows: Saturday at 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Sunday at 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Admission fee is $5.00.
Please note that you are not to park on the road; park on the lawns. I know what I am talking about because I got a $50 ticket today for that same reason.
This is exactly what I needed. A balance.
Have a good one!!….talk to you later…
