Because, today and tomorrow are the days where these talented artists open their studios.  Get to know them up close and personal.  Thirteen full time artists will be participating this year.  Some you already know, but also there are a few new faces, as well.

The doors open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.  This is a self guided free tour.  You can visit http://www.artstudiotour.com for more detailed information.

Over the years I have crawled the tour, always stopping by to visit one of my favorites.  His name is Fom Frey.  He is a Woodturner, located in Dagsboro.  Using mostly local woods he turns them into beautiful pieces of art.

Shops, restaurants, hotels, B & B’s, theatre, entertainment, galleries….The Boardwalk…the beach.  Just a stroll away; shop local, stay awhile.  Rehoboth Beach has outdone itself bringing something every week to the town.  Something worth driving to.  From the tri-state area it is so easy to get to Rehoboth Beach.  It was not so many years ago.  In 1878 the railroad was extended to this coastal town bringing more visitors and businesses.  The population in Rehoboth has grown so much. Georgetown, Delaware is the County Seat.  It is “Sixteen Miles from Anywhere” in the Deep South of Delaware.  We live in Sussex County and Georgetown is the County Seat.  Sussex County is also referred to as “Delaware’s Dixie”.

At some time or another you might have to visit Georgetown….Some pass by Georgetown as they make their yearly or week-end trips to the Delaware Beaches. Others, make Georgetown their workplace.   And, as you drive by…have you noticed how cute the streets are looking in Georgetown?  Getting into the season, I should say!

dscn1852dscn1854

My friend, Jody, and I stopped by because as it happened word of mouth told us that The Upper Crust was one to be checked.  They said that everything was homemade, delish, and their service was excellent.  So, we did!!  We found out that everything was that and more.

dscn1856

The Daily Menu has specials like Cellblock Specials….it is by the Courthouse, of course.  On that day I had their Quiche which was bacon, broccoli and cheddar, with a nice bold cup of coffee.

dscn1857dscn1870

Busy in the kitchen getting ready for the day.  We tasted their soup…so delicious, but it was not ready yet.

Quiches were being prepared.

dscn1865

dscn1861dscn1864

Dessert anyone?  At times that’s all that is needed with a cup of coffee or tea…seasonal cheesecake!

Out & About, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk, Week-Ends at The Beach, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware

dscn2054

Looking out the window, I am wondering what the heck happened to the sun?  It was so gorgeous on Sunday at the beaches, that I called my neighbor and asked her if she wanted to take a walk around Rehoboth Beach.

dscn2045

Rehoboth Beach is a great town to walk. The Boardwalk is award-winning and the iconic benches line this popular boardwalk just in case you want to relax and people watch.  Sunday was one of those days that even though it was a bit cool, the beaches were packed.  Some were at the water’s edge with sweaters, some were shopping, others were just enjoying one beautiful day.  And others decided to just eat and have something to drink.

dscn2048

The Greyhounds stayed in Dewey but they also made the rounds in Downtown Rehoboth Beach.  At least they had one good sunny day this week-end.

dscn2046

dscn2047

Walking through The Pines, a neighborhood, between Downtown Rehoboth Beach and Henlopen Acres, we stopped to check out 2 Open Houses.  One new construction and the other one a house that had been built in the 1940s and was still owned by the family.  We got a bird’s eye view from the top of this house, whose “upper deck” was a later addition.

dscn2049

On our walk we stopped at Anita Peghini-Raber Gallery.  It is located at 49 Baltimore Avenue.  Anita is an expressionist; she is also self-taught.  Website?  http://www.rehobothart.com.

dscn2053

What’s Happening at the gallery?

dscn2051

Oriental Dance with Viviana on Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.  $10 donation at the door.

Tango de Arte takes place the last Saturday of the month.  A free class from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. From 9 p.m. dance until……late.  Please visit http://www.tangolewes.com.

dscn2052

These events are well attended and they tell me that they are so much fun!!

Hungry and late in the afternoon we decided to stop at Semra’s Mediterranean Grill.  It is located at 19 Rehoboth Avenue.  John and Semra are the owners and they are always at the restaurant.  I cannot say enough about their cuisine.  Everything is made in house. Website?  http://www.semras.com.  Tel. 302-727-5964.  Sema’s is on Facebook.  Watch for Belly Dancing Events coming up in the months to come.

You know, it is really interesting, because I can say that I can make a Mousaka, but when Mousaka is served at Semra’s it takes your palate to a different dimension.  Their spices are sent by relatives and the taste is delicate, with dishes perfectly seasoned.

dscn2055

My dish was traditional from Semra’s city in Turkey…..except I forgot if it was called Manti, Monti…hopefully she will correct me.  It was light, and Semra’s described it that way.  Ground lamb with amazing spices and with just a hint of heat, topped with tzatziki (yogurt) sauce.

dscn2057

Off we went back to our car….Lucky to live at the beach and never take it for granted.  Have a great day!!

Jack Wiberg, Maritime Artist, “Lighthouses of Delaware Bay”, Paintings, Limited Edition Prints, Wiberg Art Gallery, Baltimore Ave., Downtown Rehoboth Beach, Delaware Beaches, Southern Delaware, Water-side Landmarks, Historic and Iconic

“The earliest lighthouses were simply bonfires built on hillsides to guide ships.  The first American light came to life in 1716 at Boston Harbor.”

Widely acclaimed maritime artist, Jack Wiberg, presents a new series of 8 paintings, and limited edition prints, capturing the historic significance and charm of the lighthouses of Delaware Bay.

-12

Born and raised in Wilmington, and a graduate of the University of Delaware, artist Jack Wiberg, has been painting for more than 40 years, including training with revered master oil artists such as Silva Fernandes.  Specializing in marine art, with a focus on documentaed naval events and historical location and ships, Wiberg says he remains enamored with the mystery and grace of the water and its vessels.  “With the sailing ship, there’s a certain beauty in them that doesn’t exist in today’s ships – container ships,” he explains.  “I like things that flow and have lines that catch your eye – the mood of the ocean, and of the sky…there’s so much you can capture in a marine painting.”

Jack Wiberg’s work has been exhibited in group and solo shows throughout the U.S. and is in private collections around the world.  He is a professional member of The International Society of Marine Painters and a member of The American Society of Marine Artists.  Most recently, Wiberg’s painting of The USS Delaware was selected to be included in an elite grouping of paintings, curated by the American Society of Marine Artists, to illustrate a documentary on the War of 1812 developed in conjunction with Temple University and a number of other museums.

He states that he has been planning the Lighthouse Series for quite some time, noting that these buildings are notorious, beloved by local and travelers alike.  He researched the structures thoroughly, he says, spending several months traveling around the bay, exploring the history and modern functionality of these water-side landmarks.  “The Delaware Bay was an extremely dangerous place,” explains Wiberg, stating that the lighthouses marked dangerous shoals of mud, and rock lying deep below the surface of the water.  Heavy fog and wild storms were an ever present threat.

Lighthouses represented in the series include:  the Cape May Lighthouse, the Harbor of Refuge Lighthouse, the Delaware Breakwater East End Light, the Brandywine Shoal Lighthouse, the Miah Maull Shoal Lighthouse, the Mispillion Light, the Fourteen Food Bank Lighthouse and the Ship John Shoal Lighthouse, spreading from locations in New Jersey, to Milford and points southward, on the Delaware side of the bay.

-18

“I have tried to capture some of the changing mood of the Bay, from the tranquility of a moonlit night, to the storms lashing the Miah Maull Lighthouse, to the colorful sunsets and brisk blue sky,” he states.  Wiberg describes a longtime draw to coastal Delaware, where he has been living for the past 18 years.  “I had always wanted to retire here to be close to the ocean,” he reflects.  “We think the Delaware coast is the best in the country.”

The “Lighthouses of Delaware Bay” oil paintings took nearly a year to complete, says the artist.  In order to allow admirers to enjoy and embrace the history of the Delaware Bay lighthouses, Wiberg has printed each original piece in a very limited edition of 50 signed and numbered giclee prints on canvas, making the work, and the full set, more affordable.

Day Tripping, Easton, Maryland, Hunters’ Tavern, Tidewater Inn, Shopping, Marc Randall, Women’s Apparel, Accessories, Plein Air Easton Art Festival, Most Prestigious Juried Plein Air Painting Competition in the U.S., July 12 – 20, 2014, Maryland’s Eastern Shore, Talbot County

dscn9139dscn9138

I called this post day tripping because that’s exactly what it was.  Driving to Easton from Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, takes a little bit over an hour.  I take the back roads.  Easton is the jewel of Maryland’s Eastern Shore.  It is a very sophisticated town with much history.

My first stop was to have lunch with Louise and Powell at The Hunters’ Tavern inside the Tidewater Inn, located at 101 East Dover St., Easton, MD 21601.  This is a beautiful historic hotel; very centrally located.  Tel. 410-822-1300  Website?  http://www.tidewaterinn.com.

The Hunters’ Tavern has indoor and outdoor seatings.  Tel. 410-822-1300  Website? http://www.tidewaterinn.com/dine/hunters-tavern.  The restaurant is well aware of customers with a gluten allergy.  Check the website.

We started with the Snappy Turtle Soup.  This soup is tomato based.  It is totally delicious.  I have had it before, I have written about it before….and now I am doing it again.  Don’t forget to add plenty of Sherry.  And if you want to take some home, they have it to go, as well.  Just tell them how much you want.

dscn9133

We had 2 salads:  Nuts & Berries with mixed greens, strawberries, candied walnuts and Chapel Bay Bleu Cheese.  Light and refreshing.

dscn9131

The Bibb Salad had a champagne terragon vinegar dressing, and Chapel Bay Bleu Cheese.  It was accompanied by Blackened Ahi Tuna.  This was my salad and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

dscn9132

No dessert….time to hit the town.

SHOPPING:

Some time ago I saw a boutique called Marc Randall.  I wanted to check it out.  Easton has so many stores, but this particular one is different.  Women’s fun and fine apparel.  Unique handbags and jewelry.  The location is 3 Dover St.  Tel. 410-820-4077.  Website?  http://www.marcrandall.com.  The shop is shophisticated with cutting edge appeal.  Everything is different from the rest of the shops in Easton.

dscn9141

The Ket Sao collection of jewelry caught my attention….These pieces of jewelry are beautiful accents to your wardrobe for Summer 2014.  I loved the mixed metal and beaded jewelry.

dscn9144

You can read more about this jewelry by visiting http://www.chickboss.com.  This company is helping young Guatemalans and when you purchase a piece of jewelry, you are helping too.  The metals are sealed to retard the natural oxidation process.  You can clean it with a polishing cloth if needed.  Store it in a dry place.  That’s all the care you need.

Next time in Easton stop by and meet Marc.  He is very friendly.

Blue Skies, Cool Temperatures, No Snow!, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware….A Quiet Week-End at the Beaches, What Are You Doing Today? How About Hot Off The Press?

dscn8156

Whether you like to visit the Delaware Beaches at the height of the season or during their Second Season, you have to admit that it is great to get out of town and from the routines of our daily lives.  For many this year is shoveling snow.  Guess what?  There is no snow at the Delaware Beaches, and I am writing this post from Rehoboth Beach.

You can walk the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk while breathing in the ocean air and taking in the gorgeous scenery.

dscn7322

You might have to walk it a few times if you are like me…..taking my friend, Ron, to eat his first pizza at Nicola Pizza the other day.  I told them that Ron knew how to make pizza.  He says he can make a Chicago pizza on the grill that it is to die for.  I said to the server…make it a large, half sweet peppers and mushrooms; the other half sausage and onions….well done, please.  I think Ron liked it!!

If you are looking for something to do today….Hot Off The Press Exhibit at the Rehobothy Art League located at 12 Doods Lane.  Tel. 227-8408.  Website?  http://www.rehobothartleague.org.

The Rehoboth Art League is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and Sunday from Noon until 4 p.m.  This particular exhibit will be displayed until March 2nd.

If you are traveling to Georgetown, Delaware……you might be coming to the Delaware Beaches, leaving town or just doing some business in Georgetown…The Brick Hotel is a great place to have lunch or dinner.  Please check their website, http://thebrickhotel.com.  It was a half point place to meet a friend….and this is what we had for lunch, which takes place daily from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

dscn8153

Marci got the Daily Quiche accompanied with a green salad, topped with blackberries and a sweet mustard dressing.
