“Dog-centric” to say the least.  Historic Lewes is going to the dogs.  The 7th Annual Lewes Winter Fest Barkfest event takes place in the Historic Commercial District surrounding Second Street and across the canal at Irish Eyes Pub & Restaurant on Friday and Saturday, 2/8 and 2/9.

This is a great opportunity for Valentine’s Day shoppers, diners, and visitors to participate in this fun event.  It is for the whole family.  The retail businesses and restaurants will be offering Valentine holiday-themed specials, including discounts on specific items.

Seven years ago, the Pet Pageant was started by Lesley Bowers, owner of P.U.P.S., which is a pet friendly Pawsitively Unique Pet Shop, located on 117 Second Street.  Tel. 302-645-9010.  Website?  http://www.pupsoflewes.com Leslie is also responsible for the Yappy Hour component of this year’s Winter Fest Barkfest.

The Yappy Hour will be hosted by Irish Eyes Pub & Restaurant on the canal in Lewes at 213 Anglers Rd.  Website? http://www.irisheyespub.com/lewes.html Pets, their owners, and people who like to “yap” on should be there on Friday, February 8th from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on their heated, enclosed porch.

The Georgetown SPCA,  http://www.delspca.org, will host a “Fill the Van” during both events at which time they are soliciting donations of blankets, sheets, pet food, kitty litter, toys, dog bones and bleach for cleaning their kennels.

You can attend the Yappy Hour with or without pets.  Dogs should be on a leash with one dog and one handler.

Irish Eyes will feature specialty beverages like the Bark-tini, Cat-atonic, and Mutt-ini.  There will also be 50/50 raffle benefiting the Georgetown SPCA.  In addition, Irish Eyes is donating 10% of their total food sales for the entire day to the SPCA.

On Saturday, 2/9 at 2 p.m. the much awaited and super popular Pet Pageant returns to BARK Street (Bank Street, temporarily renamed for the event).  Pets of all sizes and shapes, ages and genders strut their stuff in front of the judges and the crowds.

The 4 categories of competition are:  Formal Wear, Leisure Wear, Companion Look Alike and Kids Freestyle (open only to children).

Registration takes place at P.U.P.S. on 117 Second Street.  You can also register the day of the event in front of Citizens Bank from Noon until 1:30 p.m.  The registration donation is $5 and benefits the Georgetown SPCA.

Note:  All contestants must be on-site no later than 1:30 p.m. to receive their entry numbers.  Contestants will line up with their owners at 1:45 p.m. behind Citizens Bank.

The judges will award 3 prizes in each of 4 categories.  This year, very special shelter dogs will be at the event to show their unconditional love and to look for their forever homes.

This year’s judges are Kathy Davison of Comcast Spotlight, Teresa Ford, owner of Kids’ Ketch, and Ashley King, owner of Piccolino.

Please make sure to stop by P.U.P.S.  The store is a popular place for humans and their best friend.  It is not only for dogs.  Cats are not forgotten; they are best friends of many.

They day I stopped by I finally got to meet Leslie.  It was great to see her interaction with her customers that seemed to know the store so well.

The customers came with their dogs and they were so funny.  This puppy was just adorable.  I think his name was Kalo.

These other ones were getting to know each other.

The store has leashes, treats, bath essentials….and something for the human in the pet’s life.

I love this store! I have found the best products for my dog and cat here, the best rain jacket for a hurricane, the safest and most comfortable collar for preventing scratching after surgery, great collars and leashes for walking my dog and the funniest cat toys. Very unique! And Lesley is so wonderful to all the four legged friends who visit. No wonder they all want to come back.
